8 Claims. (Cl. 269-153) This invention relates to vises and particularly to an improved vise jaw construction for gripping a plurality of workpieces.
In general, the vise of the present invention includes a base means that supports a pair of longitudinally spaced jaw means one of which movably supports a pair of laterally spaced jaw means, whereby the vise is adapted to grip an assembly of workpieces on four sides.
In accordance with the present invention the apparatus further includes a novel actuating means for uniformly applying clamping force to both the longitudinally and laterally spaced jaw means whereby the assembly workpieces are accurately positioned and firmly retained.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a vise that includes a novel jaw construction for accurately positioning and firmly retaining a plurality of workpieces.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an apparatus of the type described that is readily adjusted for accommodating various sizes and quantities of workpieces.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide an improved vise jaw construction that can be readily installed on conventional machinists vises for the purpose of adapting the vise to firmly grip and accurately position a plurality of workpieces to be simultaneously machined.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred form of embodiment of the invention is clearly shown.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of a vise constructed in accordance with the present invention; and
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the vise construction in FIG. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawings FIGS. 1 and 2 illus trate a vise constructed in accordance with the present invention that includes a base means indicated generally at 20. The base means includes first and second longitudinally spaced jaw means 22 and 24.
A slide means indicated generally at 30 also includes bottom protrusions 32 disposed in tracks 28 which movably mount the slide means on base means.
Slide means 30 is longitudinally driven by means of a screw indicated generally at 34 that includes a threaded shank 36 disposed in a threaded bore 38 and an end provided with a spline 40 for attachment of an actuating tool. Two collars 42 and 44, which are pinned to screw 34 as seen at 46, retain the screw against longitudinal movement relative to base means 20.
As is best seen in FIG. 2, slide 30 includes a transverse member 48 secured to slide means 30 by screws 50 which extend through holes 66 in slide 30.
Transverse member 48 is also provided with laterally extending tracks 52 and 54. A pair of lever mounting members 56 and 58 are slidably mounted in tracks 54 and provide means for mounting two levers indicated generally at 60 and 62 for pivotal movement about pins 64.
The outer ends of laterally extending member 48 are strengthened against bending stresses by screws 68 and 7t).
Jaw member 24 is provided with laterally extending slots 74 which form tracks for laterally spaced jaw members 76 and 78. V
Jaw members 76 and 78 include inclined cam surfaces 80 and 82 which are respectively engaged by follower 3,182,990 Patented May 11, 1965 portions 84 and 86 formed by the ends of levers'60 and 62. The other ends 88 and 90 engage jaw member 22.
In operation, laterally spaced jaw means 76 and 78 are moved inwardly along tracks 74 and into engagement with one side of the assembly of work pieces. Longitudinally movable jaw means 22 is next moved along tracks 28 and into engagement with the assembly. Screw 34 is next actuated to move slide 30 and bring levers 60 and 62 into the proximity of jaw members 22, 76, and 78. If necessary, lever mounts 56 and 58 are adjusted laterally to bring the levers into the force applying configuration of FIG. 2. Screw 36 is next actuated to cause the levers to simultaneously apply force to the jaw member with the inclined cam surface and 82 serving to apply a torque about pin 64 which urges lever portions 88 and 92 against the opposite ends of jaw member 22 at the same time jaw members 76 and 78 are urged. inwardly by followers 84 and 86.
While the forms of embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
