GAS-PRESSURE REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,918, dated May 12, 1885. Application filed February 10, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REINHOLD BOEKLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Pressure Regulators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invent-ion is to improve gas-regulators; and it consists, essentially, in combining with a self-seating valve, and also with certain inlet and outlet passages, a float of a siphon construction, all of which will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diametrical section throug my improved gas-regulator. Fig. 2 is a section taken in the course of the dotted line a b. Fig. 3 is a section taken in the course of the line 0 d.
This invention relates to what are denominated "pressure-regulators, which are especially designed for illuminating-gas, but which may be used for other purposes when an automatic regulator is required.
The case D may be of sheet or cast metal.
I prefer to construct this case or shell in the following manner, to wit: a cylinder closed at its lower end and provided with a draw-oft cock, S, or its equivalent; also with an annular flange on the interior side of the upper end, as shown, which flange is internally screwthreaded. This flanged cylinder contains concentrically within it another cylinder, 0, which dips down nearly to the bottom of the cylinder D, and thus forms a siphon when glycerine or other like fluid is used. The interior concentric'cylinder is cast entire with the upper gas-conveying portion, and at a a screwthread is provided, which,when the upper and lower sections are united, forms a joint. This upper section is provided with a vent, E, which is in communication with the annular space between the exterior and interior walls of the device. This vent is for the purpose of allowingfree atmospheric communication with the liquid. I construct this upper removable portion of the device as follows: L designates a chamber, which communicates with the space A inside of the cylinder 0 by the passages M and M. Said removable portion is also constructed with a concavo-convex valveseat, from which rises an annular portion having an aperture through its side. Directly above this annular portion is an opening closed by a screw-cap, It. Said opening serves the purpose to allow access for removing the regulating-valve H. Said valve passes through the central opening of the valve-seat, and is made cone-shaped, its base beinga segment of a sphere, and bears on a flexible packing, such as leather, and as indicated by letter V. This packing V bears on a cupped screw-nut, U, which is applied to the annular lipped and threaded portion of a float, G. This annular lipped portion is an upper extension of a thickened concentric portion of the said double convex float-G. The thickened portion has a socket in which the ball-shaped head of a bolt, T, is seated, which bolt, with its nut, connects the float G to the valve H, so that the parts will articulate and allow the float to rise and descend vertically without frictional contact with any other object except the liquid and gas in which it moves.
With the annular chamber L communicates a horizontal passage, N, which is provided with the usual threaded hub, N, of the outlet of the regulator for attachment and leading into the building or consumers room.
The inlet 0 of the regulator is arranged vertically under the outlet N. A secondary passage, 0, forms a communication between the inlet 0 and the central annular space, J, over the valve H and its seat, before described.
In the partition-wall, between the inlet and outlet passages N and O, is provided a try or test cock, P, for the purpose of furnishing the regulator with a direct pass for testing the saving qualities of the regulator, so that by this means I am able to have the gas either pass direct from the inlet through the cock P into the outlet without operating the regulating-valve, or to pass through the regulator before reaching the outlet, thus operating the regulating-valve and the float G, while the cock I? is closed.
The gas entering the inlet 0 passes into the annular central space, J, over the valve, and an overdue pressure at once forces the valve downward. The gas continuing to pass through the valve-seat causes a more or less depression of the float upon the liquid, which operates automatically the valve H, to allow no more gas to pass than required to maintain in the float-chamber of the cylinder the normal pressure for which the device is regulated by the amount of liquid held in said chamber. From this chamber A the gas passes through the openings M and M into the annular chamber L, and from it into the outlet-passage N.
- Said openings M and M are equally distributed over the float for the pressure to react equally upon the float and prevent its tendency to cant to one side.
It will be observed from the above description that Iemploy a float within chambers formed by an outer wall and an interior dipping wall, which leads nearly to the bottom of the exterior chamber.
At the upper end of the interior wall is a valve-seat, to which is applied a self-adjusting valve, from which is suspended the float aforesaid.
' It will also be observed that the liquid used is below the valve, for this reason, to wit: that it is not possible to blow the gas through the seal, whereas when theliquid is in a chamber above the valve, and the gas is forced into the regulator above the liquid seal, the gas is liable to escape by breaking the seal.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a gas-regulator, the combination of a double-wall vessel having an air-vent with a chambered cap provided with inlet and outlet passages and a scribed.
2. In a gas-regulator, as described, a cook 0 located between chambers N O and in line with the inlet and outlet passages N and 0, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a gas-regulator, of a try-cock located between the inlet and outlet passages, substantially as described.
4. In a gasregulator, a float suspended by a ball-and-sooketjoint,'in combination with a valve, a valve-seat, the liquid-chamber, and the gas inlet and outlet chambers, substan- 5o tially as described.
5. In a gas-regulator, the combination of a float, a regulating-valve, and an intermediate elastic ball-and-socket connection, substantry-cock, substantially as detially in the manner and for the purposes de- REINHOLD BOEKLEN.
