No. 189,362 22 Claims. (Cl. StZ-268) The present invention relates to a cabinet, tiling cabinet 0r the like, of the type having internal movable boxes mounted between the two transmitting elements of two belt, band, chain or similar endless transmission gears.
The main and basic object of this invention is to obtain a cabinet of Very great capacity in height, either upwards or downwards from the floor or place of access to the interior of same, allowing withdrawal of its contents from said place, whatever the height where such contents are located within the cabinet.
In other words, the aim is to obtain a cabinet, filing cabinet or like, the contents of which can be drawn towards the person who needs them, whatever is the place Where these are located within the cabinet, instead of having to fetch them from said place; in other terms, the aim is to produce a cabinet in which it is possible to move all its contents in order to have access to any part of same, from a given place, independently of the dimensions or the cabinet in height, upwards or downwards from the place of access.
Another object is to produce a cabinet that can be formed by sections, in such a manner as to enable changing a cabinet of a given height into another one higher or lower simply by adding or taking ott intermediate sections.
These objects and others that will appear hereinafter have been embodied in the cabinet invented, character'- ized in that for guiding the boxes, two lateral bodies facing each other are provided, each of which has a guide in closed circuit consisting of two intermediate rectilinear and parallel sections, corresponding to the same sections of said transmission gears, two semicircular end sections which connect the adjacent ends of said intermediate sections and, next to each semicircular end section, a second complementary semicircular section having the same radius constitutes an additional connection between both rectilinear sections of the guide, leaving between analogous points of a semicircular end section and the related semicircular complementary section, a distance which is substantially constant from one rectilinear section to the other, the referred boxes being arranged between b'oth guiding bodies, articulately connected to the transmitting element of said transmission gears through only one point, forming a continuous and closed outt, the connection between each box and both transmitting elements determining an axis of rotation of said box in relation to said elements parallel to the rotation axis of the wheels of said transmission gears, each box being mounted on each guide through two railing elements capable of keeping the box displaceably connected to the guides along its entire trajectory, these elements being capable of displacing simultaneously, one on each semicircular section of the pair corresponding to an end of the circuit, when rotation commences in the articulation between the box and the transmitting element of said transmission gears, each of which is located next to one of said lateral guide bodies, each box having at its top two free wheels, located one at each side of the vertical plane passing through the rotation axis of the box relative to the transmitting elements, which can roll over the surface of the V-shaped bottom of the preceding box.

As above mentioned and as shown in the ligures, the cabinet invented consists of a large external box made of any material, which can be a component part of a construction, for instance of a house.
In the example in consideration the referred box has walls, roof and floor formed by wooden 'or metal boards or plates, assembled on a rectangular prismatic framework made of metal rolled shapes, formed essentially by two lateral frames a joined by a number of crossbeams.
The two lateral frames a constitute backing supports for corresponding guiding bodies b arranged one at each side within the said large box, facing each other, with a plurality of movable boxes c arranged in between and articulately connected to the transmitting elements of two endless transmission gears d provided within the said box, one at each side of the cabinet each of them mounted on one of said frames a 'of the framework, behind the respective guiding body i9.
These boxes c are guided by the referred guiding bodies b which provide a closed circuit for the displacement of the boxes, and are conveyed by the referred transmission gears d which establish like a coupling in be# tween, forming a true continuous and closed outiit, that is, without interruption of continuity.
Each of the referred guiding bodies b has a guide b for the boxes, formed by an endles slot comprising two rectilinear sections ll parallel in between and two semi# circular end sections 2 which connect the adjacent ends of said rectilinear sections, including in relation with each of said semicircular end sections 2, that form the curved ends of the circuit, a complementary semicircular section 3 which interconnects both rectilinear sections near their ends engaging perfectly with them, with the pecuiiarity that said complementary semicircular section 3 has the same radius as the respective semicircular end section 2, and that the distance between analogous points in ICC both sections is substantially constant between rectilinear sections whereby both determine corresponding semicircular parallel trajectories for connecting between ad- .jacent ends of both recilinear sections.
In the embodiment considered, this guide b is determined by the uniform and constant clearance between the adjacent and parallel edges of two legs 4 of corresponding angle rolled shapes, which are conveniently secured tov the respective lateral frame a of the frame work, in corresponding crosspieces 5 of sarne, with the following feature, the object of which will be explained l ercinafter.
The guide body b is divided at 90 degrees to said rectilinear sections 1 of its guide b', into two parts, which can be of the same or preferably of diierent size, a longer one I fixed, and a shorter one ll movable, this latter comprising a complete end of the circuit for movement of the boxes, that is to say, a portion of said rectilinear sections, `a semicircular connecting section 2 and the respective semicircular complementary section 3.
This entire movable part II of each guiding body b, .which is similar in both bodies, is mounted on its own supporting structure e which in turn is displaceably ,mounted on guides in the corresponding lateral frame a of the framework.
Provision is made, for instance, for assembling said structure by means of a skeleton of rolled shapes 6 provided with two or four wheels 'l' which will slide over rails or guides S of said frame a of the framework, each formed, for example, by means of a U rolled shape Welded to the vertical portions of said frame, as shown in FIGURE 5.
The ends 4' of the angle rolled shapes, which legs 4 determine the guiding slot b', resulting from said division in the guide body, are overlapped in the manner shown in FIGURE 6 in order to enable the referred movement of the movable part Il of the guiding body relative to the fixed part I, in approximation or in separation Without discontinuing slot b'.
Each of the referred endless transmission gears d is located adjacent to one of said guiding bodies b, behind the same, as indicated herein before, and comprises a transmitting element formed by an endless chain 9 having links articulated in between by means of pins and two end wheels -10 and l1 for guidance and support with teeth for gearing with said links; both wheels are mounted free on corresponding axle ends in cantilever 12 which protrude from corresponding plate fianges 13 which ix them to a crosspiece 14 of the frame a of the referred framework; the axle end corresponding to the upper wheel 1G is secured directly to a crosspiece 14 in the lateral adjacent frame of said framework, while the axle end corresponding tothe lower wheel is secured to a crosspiece 14 of the structure e for support of the movable part l1 of the guiding body b, in order to move with this parti.
The reason for dividing the guide body b and for assemblinga part of same so as to enable approximation or separation from the other one is that by this arrangement,
and with the lower wheel 11 of the endless transmission gear mounted on said movable part II of the guide b preventing the vertical displacement of same, it is possible to keep the transmission chain 9 perfectly taut, without changing the location of said lower wheel 11 of the transmission relative to the semicircular sections 2 and 5 of the guide b corresponding to the movable part II of the body of same, this location being of great importance, as will appear hereinafter.
The referred tautness can be maintained, for instance, by means of one or more compressiong springs 15 interposed between a crosspiece 16 of said supporting structure e for the movable part Il of the guide body and the wheel 11 of transmission d, and a crosspieee 17 in the lateral frome a of the framework, wherein this structure is displaceably mounted.
Said chain 9 of each transmission gear has two rectilinear sections parallel in between, through which substantially coincides with the rectilinear sections 1 of the guide b of the adjacent guide body and two curved end sections which surround the referred wheels i0 and 11, this curved section being intermediate and equidistant from the adjacent semicircular end section 2 and its complementary semicircular end section 3, as shown in FIG- URE 4.
Each ofthe referred movable internal boxes c of the cabinet, essentially comprises two substantially parallel planes c', each located adjacent to each guiding body b and are provided with railing elements; these railing elements f are constituted in the present embodiment by two free wheels 1S mounted on corresponding axle ends in cantilever 19 which protrude from corresponding plates 20 through which are secured to the corresponding-lateral portion c' of the box.
These two yaxles 19 are parallel in between and also parallel to the `rotation axes of the wheels of the transmission gears, these axes determine avirtual plane which coincides with the plane of symmetry of the box; this arrangement is not indispensable, but it is convenient that said virtual plane -be also a plane of symmetry, as this permits an even distribution of the loads on both wheels.
These wheels at each side tit inside the guiding 4slot b with some play which permits them to roll indistinctly on any of its edges; the distance between the respective rotation axes and the distance between a semicircular end section of the guide and its complementary semicircular section are the same, whereby both wheels 18 will enter simultaneously, each to the corresponding semicircular section ofthe pair which forms the curved end of the circuit, when the box reaches this end and will roll along the same keeping the box in the same position as it is while it moves along the rectilinear sections of said guide, in which both wheels 18 prevent the box to rotate around Vthe axis determined by its vinculations to both transmission gears, to which reference will be made hereinafter.
The wheels 18 have anges 18 which guide their rolling rims in both sides on the edges-of the guiding slot b', and provide lateral abutment for the wheels against the marginal portion corresponding to each edge, thereby ensur ing perfect Vrailing on the edges of the slot.
The box c thus railed in both guides b through the wheels 18 at its sides c', is articulately connected to both chains 9 through only one `point which is at mid-distance between the wheels at each side; this connection is es tablished by means of one of the pins 21 of the chain, a portion of which protrudes laterally from 'the same, and passes with play through the guiding slot b', inserting and yfitting slidably linto `a socket 22 provided in a lpiece 23 secured to the cor-responding side of the box, and to which the pin is fixed by means of a Wedge 24, as `shown in FIGURE 9.
With this arrangement the connections of the box to the chain of each transmission gear determine a virtual rotation axis of the box relative to the chains; and thus prevent the chains 9 from dragging the box in its rotation when passing from a rectilinear section of its trajectory to the other one, leaving it free tokeep its vertical position, which is determined by the cooperating action of lthe wheels .1S vat its sides c' and the guides b'.
As ,the connection between each side c" and the adjacent chain 9 moves along a trajectory which does not coincide with any of the two semicircular sections 2 and 3 of the yadjacent guide b', but is intermediate between these two sections corresponding to each curved end of the circuit, an open siding 25 is provided in each rectilinear section 1 of said guide, in the section l'located in between one seniicircular end section 2 and the respective complementary semicircular section 3; .this open siding 25 determines, considering the direction of the movement of. the boxes in said portion of a rectilinear section, an outlet for said connection relative to this portion, and on the same adjacent part of the other rectilinear portion, an inlet to same.
The purpose of arranging the connection between the box and each chain in the middle between both railing elements f is to exert the same traction force on both when the box passes from one rectilinear section 1 to the other one through the respective semicircular sections 2 and 3 at each curved end of the circuit, thus producing a smooth displacement and ensuring that the box is kept in correct position.
The purpose for providing two railing elements at each side of the box is to ensure that it is kept in normal, vertical position, preventing any oscillations or overturnings along its whole trajectory.
To provide maximum useful space in the movable boxes c, and in order that the total capacity of said boxes is as near as possible to the total capacity of the cabinet, said boxes c are arranged practically one in continuation of the other one, practically without leaving clearance between them, but in such a manner that the boxes do not knock each other when passing from one rectilinear section of the guide to the other one through the referred semicircular end sections.
The referred ldiocking is prevented by suitably shaping portion c of each box, which correspond to the outline of the upper portion 26 and lower portion 27 of the box sides; each of these sides c has a form composed of a central rectangle which corresponds to the intermediate portion 28 of the side; a halt octagonal polygon which corresponds to the upper portion 2d, the division line of which joins two opposite angles of the same and coincides with the upper border of said rectangle, and a triangle which corresponds to the lower portion Z7 of the side, has two equal borders anda third one through which coincides with the lower border of the referred rectangle.
By shaping as above the top and bottom of the boxes, these can be arranged one practically next to the other one and can displace over the referred semicircular sections of their trajectory without knocking each other.
The faces determined by said shaping are like chamfers which result from taking oi those portions at the upper and lower portions of the boxes, through which these would knock each other when passing from a rectilinear to a semicircular section, if the boxes had at top and bottom.
The maximum possible utilization of the interior of the cabinet is achieved with the above described arrangement of boxes.
To prevent any sliding or friction between the bottom c of a box and the top c of the following one, when the iirst passes from the rectilinear section to the semicircular sections 2 and 3, inthe uprising section, two pairs of Wheels or rollers 29 are provided at the top of each box; these wheels can be made of rubber, for example, and each pair is located at opposite sides of the upper central edge and at the same distance thereof; the wheels ot each pair are mounted free at the top along a rotation axis which substantially coincides with a lateral edge consecutive to said central edge.
The centraledges at the top and at the bottom of the box are contained in the above mentioned longitudinal plane of symmetry of the box, which also contains the rotation axes of the railing wheels and the axis of rotation of the box relative to the chains determined by its connections to said chains.
At the referred stage of movement of the boxes, the possible contact that eventually could be made between the bottom of one box and the top of the following one, is established between one of the oblique faces of said bottom and the wheels or rollers of the nearest edge in the top of the following box, the Contact being only by rolling that does not affect at all the position of the boxes and the sole purpose of which is to prevent friction and wear between the surfaces that eventually could get in contact.
The referred shape of the sides of the box corresponds to the cross section of its internal part, or empty space enclosed by the box, which can be divided as desired, for example, by means of shelves 3@ as shown in FIG. 1.
Mechanical operation of the boxes may be accomplished by means of an electric motor 34 which actuates both endless ltransmissions d through respective chain transmissions 3i between wheels 32 fixed to wheels 11 and a common axle 33 driven by the electric motor 34 through a worm gear 35, the latter serving to lock the boxes against movement due to animbalance in the train comprising the boxes when the motor is stopped.
'With reference to the opening in the cabinet for access to the boxes, more precisely, to the box which is located facing it, provision is made for closing by means of two leaves 36 of the guillotine type, which move simultaneously in opposite directions preferably vertically, interconnected in between in a conventional arrangement.
No doubt that in the embodiments of this invention, some modiiications can be introduced in details of construction and shape of the cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like invented, but never departing from the fundamental principles clearly specied in the following claims.
We claim:
1. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, of the type comprising internal movafble boxes mounted between two transmitting elements of two belt, band chain or similar endless transmission gears, characterised in that said cabinet includes two lateral bodies for guiding said boxes, facing each other and provided each with a guide in closed circuit consisting of two rectilinear and parallel sections, corresponding to the same sections of said transmission gears and two semicircular end sections corresponding to similar sections of each transmitting element of said transmission gears, engage the adjacent ends of said intermediate sections, said guide including contiguous to each semicircular end section, a second cornplementary semicircular section having the same radius which establishes an additional connection between both rectilinear sections of the guide, the distance between analogous points of a semicircular end section and the respective complementary semicircular section being substantially constant, from one rectilinear section to the other one, the said boxes being located between both guiding bodies, articulately connected through only one point to the transmitting element of said transmission gears forming a continuous and closed outfit, the connection between each box and both transmit-ting elements determining an axis of rotation of the box relative to said elements, which is parallel to the rotation axis of the wheels Vof said transmission gears, each box being mounted on each guide by means of two railing elements capable of keeping the box operatively connected to the guide along its entire trajectory, said elements being capable of displacing simultaneously, each along each semicircular section of the pair corresponding to an end of the circuit, when rotation of the connection between the box and the transmitting element of said transmission gears commences, each of said gears being located next to one of said lateral guiding bodies, each box having at its top two free wheels, one wheel being located at each side of the vertical plane passing through the axis or rotation of the box relative to the transmitting elements, in engaging position with corresponding rolling tracks to thereby provide a V provided at the bottom of the preceding box.
2. A cabinet, filing cabinet or the like, according to claim l, characterised in that the said guide of the guiding body is formed by a slot.
3. Acabinet, tiling cabinet tor the like, according to claim 2, characterised in that the said slot is determined by the parallel-and adjacent edges of two angle rolled shapes secured to acommon backing element.
atrapar 4. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 3, characterised in that said backing element is defined by'a structure of metal rolled shapes.
5. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim l, characterised in that each of the referred boxes -is Imounted behind ione of said guiding bodies, the rectilinear sections of its transmitting element coinciding with the same sections of the guide of this latter.
6. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 5, lcharacterised in that the transmitting element of each of the referred endless transmission gears is formed by a chain with links articulately connected in between by means of pins, each box being secured to the chain of each transmission gear by means of one of said pins, which is provided at one of its ends with a plate for securing the adjacent side of the box.

A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 6, characterised in that the referred pin for securing the chain of each transmission gear to each box passes with play through the slot constituting the guide of the adjacent guiding body, said slot having in the portion of each rectilinear section comprised between the two engagements of same with the two semicircular sections corresponding to an end of the circuit, a lateral siding terminating in an open end, which in-said portion of one of the rectilinear sections constitutes an outlet for the pin connection between the chain and the box, and at the same adjacent part ot the other section constitutes an inlet to the guiding slot.
8. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 7, characterised in that tensioning means are included for the transmitting element of each of the referred endless transmission gears.
9. A cabinet, ling cabinet or the like, according to claim 8, characterised in that said tensioning means for veach endless transmission gear are related to the lower wheel of each transmission gear.
10. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to Vclaim 9, characterised in that each guiding body is divided ftransversally'to the direction of its rectilinear sections of the guide,.into two parts, an upper and a lower one, having `overlapped portions capable of permitting the longitudinal movement of one of the parts relative to the other maintaining the respective guide without interruption of continuity, one of each said parts being secured to the referred ybacking element and the other one secured to a supporting structure slidably mounted Von corresponding guides capable of permitting said longitudinal movement between both parts of each guiding body, thewheel of the endless transmission gear adjacent to the guiding body which corresponds to the movable part of same `being rotatively mounted on said supporting structure for this movable part of the guiding body.

A cabinet, ling cabinet or the like, according to claim 10, characterised in that the referred tensioning v means for the transmitting element of each endless transmission gear are constituted by elastic means interposed between the supporting structure for the movable part of each guiding body and the backing for the iixed part `of this same body.
12. A cabinet, filing cabinet or the like, according to claim 10, characterised wherein said movable part of each guiding body comprises the adjacent end portions of two rectilinear sections of the guide and the two connecting semicircular sections.
13. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 12, characterised in that the guide in each of the guiding bodies is formed by a slot determined between the adjacent `and parallel edges of the legs of two rolled shapes, the railing elements provided at the adjacent side of each box being constituted by two free wheels mounted on corresponding axle ends at said side, each arranged with its rim between the edges of said slot, with some play capable of permitting its free rolling over any of said edges, the rolling rim of .each wheel being directed between two abutting annular flanges, leaving a clearance between both wheels suitable to allow simultaneous displacement of the wheels on the two semi-circular sections at the end of each circuit, one on each of said sections.

A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 13, characterised in that the point of connection between the transmitting element of each endless transmission gear and each box is interposed between Vthe two railing elements provided in each box in engaging position with the corresponding guiding body.
15. A cabinet, ling cabinet or the like, according to claim 14, characterised in that both endless transmission gears are connected to -a common driving element through a worm gear. Y

A cabinet, tiling cabinet orithe like, according to claim 15, characterised in that each side of each box has a shape composed by an intermediate rectangle, an intermediate part substantially rectangular, an upper portion of octagonal polygon shape, the division line of which passes through two opposed angles of the same and coincides with the top side of said intermediate rectangle and a lower triangular portion having at least two equal sides and a third one through which coincides with'the lower side of said intermediate rectangle, the angle at the top of the upper portion and the ang e at the lower portion determining a virtual line which is substantially parallel to the vertical sides of the referred intermediate rectangle, in which line are located the referred railing elements provided at the side of the box andthe connection between said side and the transmittingelement of the respective endless transmission gear.

A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 16, characterised in that the wheels provided at the top of each box, which are two at least, are arranged with ktheir respective rotation axes parallel to the respective rotation laxes of the wheels of the endless transmission gear, the virtual axis of the rotation of each'wheel being aligned with two corresponding side angles, at the upper portion of both sides of the box.
18. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 17, characterised in vthat the backings of said guide ibody are joined forming an integral framework.
19. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 18, characterised in that said framework and bodies for guiding the boxes are divided at least in two along a division plane perpendicular to the direction of movement of the boxes determined by the rectilinear sections of the guide of said guiding bodies, these parts constituting sections removably connected in between, the corresponding portions of the framework and the guiding body in each section being operatively connected in between, forming an `integral unit.
20. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or'the like, according to claim 19, characterised in that said cabinet has a front wall with an opening for access to at least one of the boxes of the outfit of boxes contained in same, said opening having two guillotine ktype mounted closing leaves having opposite directions of displacement.
21. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to any of the preceding claims, characterised in 'that each box is subdivided into several independent boxes.
22. A cabinet, tiling cabinet or the like, according to claim 21, characterised in that each box has internal shelves.

Claims (1)

1. A CABINET, FILING CABINET OR THE LIKE, OF THE TYPE COMPRISING INTERNAL MOVABLE BOXES MOUNTED BETWEEN TWO TRANSMITTING ELEMENTS OF TWO BELT, BAND CHAIN OR SIMILAR ENDLESS TRANSMISSION GEARS, CHARACTERISED IN THAT SAID CABINET INCLUDES TWO LATERAL BODIES FOR GUIDING SAID BOXES, FACING EACH OTHER AND PROVIDED EACH WITH A GUIDE IN CLOSED CIRCUIT CONSISTING OF TWO RECTILINEAR AND PARALLEL SECTIONS, CORRESPONDING TO THE SAME SECTIONS OF SAID TRANSMISSION GEARS AND TWO SEMICIRCULAR END SECTIONS CORRESPONDING TO SIMILAR SECTIONS OF EACH TRANSMITTING ELEMENT OF SAID TRANSMISSION GEARS, ENGAGE THE ADJACENT ENDS OF SAID INTERMEDIATE SECTIONS, SAID GUIDE INCLUDING CONTIGUOUS TO EACH SEMICIRCULAR END SECTION, A SECOND COMPLEMENTARY SEMICIRCULAR SECTION HAVING THE SAME RADIUS WHICH ESTABLISHES AN ADDITIONAL CONNECTION BETWEEN BOTH RECTILINEAR SECTIONS OF THE GUIDE, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN ANALOGOUS POINTS OF A SEMICIRCULAR END SECTION AND THE RESPECTIVE COMPLEMENTARY SEMICIRCULAR SECTION BEING SUBSTANTIALLY CONSTANT, FROM ONE RECTILINEAR SECTION TO THE OTHER ONE, THE SAID BOXES BEING LOCATED BETWEEN BOTH GUIDING BODIES, ARTICULATELY CONNECTED THROUGH ONLY ONE POINT TO THE TRANSMITTING ELEMENT OF SAID TRANSMISSION GEARS FORMING A CONTINUOUS AND CLOSED OUTFIT, THE CONNECTION BETWEEN EACH BOX AND BOTH TRANSMITTING ELEMENTS DETERMINING AN AXIS OF ROTATION OF THE BOX RELATIVE TO SAID ELEMENTS, WHICH IS PARALLEL TO THE THE ROTATION AXIS OF THE WHEELS OF SAID TRANSMISSION GEARS, EACH BOX BEING MOUNTED ON EACH GUIDE BY MEANS OF TWO RAILING ELEMENTS CAPABLE OF KEEPING THE BOX OPERATIVELY CONNECTED TO THE GUIDE ALONG ITS ENTIRE TRAJECTORY, SAID ELEMENTS BEING CAPABLE OF DISPLACING SIMULTANEOUSLY, EACH ALONG EACH SEMICIRCULAR SECTION OF THE PAIR CORRESPONDING TO AN END OF THE CIRCUIT, WHEN ROTATION OF THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE BOX AND THE TRANSMITTING ELEMENT OF SAID TRANSMISSION GEARS COMMENCES, EACH OF SAID GEAR BEING LOCATED NEXT TO ONE OF SAID LATERAL GUIDING BODIES, EACH BOX HAVING AT ITS TOP TWO FREE WHEELS, ONE WHEEL BEING LOCATED AT EACH SIDE OF THE VERTICAL PLANE PASSING THROUGH THE AXIS OF ROTATION OF THE BOX RELATIVE TO THE TRANSMITTING ELEMENTS, IN ENGAGING POSITION WITH CORRESPONDING ROLLLING TRACKS TO THEREBY PROVIDE A V PROVIDED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PRECEDING BOX.
