(ill. 211-60) This invention relates to devices in the form of hanger brackets or frames for hanger support of writing implements in connection with a solid supporting base of any type or kind. More particularly, the invention includes means on the bracket or frame and one end of the writing implement for magnetically retaining the implement or implements in hanger position above the base.
Still more particularly, the invention deals with the provision of means for bracing or keying the bracket or frame on the base.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic sectional view through a base illustrating in full lines, one form of hanger bracket or frame with two writing implements coupled therewith, part of one implement being broken away and indicating, in dotted lines, a modified mounting of a bracket or frame in connection with the base.
FIG. 2 is a partial section on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1, with part of the construction broken away and illustrating in full lines the dotted line showing of FIG. 1.
PEG. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the upper portion of one of the arms shown in FIG. 1 and illustrating one arrangement of magnetic support of the writing implement in connection with the arm; and
FIG. 4 is a View, similar to FIG. 3, showing a modified arrangement of the magnet, the upper portion of the arm being shown in section and part of the writing implement being shown in elevation.
In illustrating one adaptation and use of my invention, I have shown in FlG. l and, in part, in FIG. 2 a base 19, preferably made of molded plastic material, and generally similar to desk set bases, as are commonly in use. The upper surface 11 of the base, preferably adjacent one side thereof, namely the rear side, includes integral upwardly extending bearings 12, having horizontal apertures 13 therein. Inner adjacent surfaces of the bearings, at the upper portion thereof, include projecting brace or key portions 14, having semi-circular recesses 15, as clearly noted in FIG. 2 of the drawing. The upper surface portion 11 of the base It), in alinement with the recesses 15, has vertical apertures 16, in which are mounted ferrules 17, as clearly noted in FIG. 1 of the drawing.
At 18 I have shown one of my improved hanger brackets or frames, comprising two similar arms 19, the upper end portions of which are curved and extend laterally, as seen at 26, and terminate at their free ends in enlarged members which, in the construction shown, are in the form of spheres or balls 21. These spheres can be soldered or otherwise fixed to the ends of the arms. Upper portions of the arms 19 cross and are secured together at 22. The lower substantially straight end portions 23 of the arms are tensioned to normally separate a degree greater than the position shown in FIG. 1, wherein these ends are mounted in the apertures 16, or the ferrules 17 disposed therein. It will also be apparent that these arms, above the apertures 16, engage the recesses 15 and, in this manner, the arms are keyed or braced in their attachment to the base.
3,178,031 Patented Apr. 13, 1965 ice It is also possible to employ arms, generally similar to the arms 19, shown in FIG. 1, with laterally extending coupling feet on the ends 23, as indicated in dotted lines at 24 in FIG. 1 and one of these feet is shown, in part, in full lines in FIG. 2. These feet are adapted to extend into the apertures 13 and these modified arms will be braced and keyed in the recesses 15, as clearly shown by the portion 25 of one of these arms, as shown in FIG. 2. With this latter construction, the recesses 15 serve to prevent rotation of the bracket or frame in the apertures 13, as will be apparent. With the modified structure as mentioned, the arms will be tensioned laterally, similar to the arms 15, and, in coupling the feet 24 with the apertures, the arms are tension-ally brought into close proximity to each other. It will also be apparent that the recesses 15 with this modified structure serve to check movement of the arms into their normally tensioned position.
Turning now to the showing in FIGS. 1 and 3 of the drawing, at 26, 26' are shown two generally similar writing implements insofar as upper end portions thereof are concerned, the implement, in the construction shown, being in the form of a ball point pen, having a lower ball point writing end, as at 27. If two pens are employed, these pens can have different writing inks, it being understood, however, that the implement 26' can be a pencil. In referring to FIG. 3 of the drawing, reference will be made to the implement 26. Mounted in the upper end portion of this implement is a cylinder magnet 28, over which is disposed a magnet sensitized cap 29 to finish the end of the implement, the cap of 26 being indicated at 29' in FIG. 1 of the drawing. With this construction, the sphere or ball 21 will be made of steel or similar material, to which the magnet 28 is attracted. It will, thus, be apparent that the magnets will serve to support the writing implements in the hanging position above the base it}, in the manner diagrammatically illustrated, and permit quick removal of the implement and replacement or the implement to its hanging position. In this latter operation, as soon as the upper end of the writing implement is brought into close proximity to the balls 21, the pen will be attracted to and held by these balls. The rounded surface of the ball will assure proper positioning of the pens thereon in their hanging position.
In FIG. 4 of the drawing, I have shown a slight modification, wherein a magnet 30 is mounted in a ball or other enlargement 21 at the upper end 2% of an arm or arms, as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawing. The ball will have a bore 31 therein, preferably lined with any suitable non-magnetic material, as at 32, and, with this construction, it is desirable that the ball 21' be composed of non-magnetic material of any kind. 26" shows the upper end of a writing implement which could be similar to either one of the implements 26, 26' and include a magnetic at-tractable cap 29", similar to the caps 29, 29', and here the cap 2%" will be magnetically attracted to and supported on the surface 30' of the magnet 30, as diagrammatically seen in FIG. 4 of the drawing.
It will be apparent that the hanger bracket or frame, as at 18, can be of any desired construction and form a support for one or more writing implements, the illustration of two in the accompanying drawing being by way of illustrating one adaptation and use of the invention. Further, it will be understood that the base, in connection with which the bracket or frame is coupled, can be of any structure to which the bracket or frame can be attached, in the manner illustrated in full or in dotted lines in FIG. 1.
I claim:
1. A device of the character defined comprising a base, a writing implement hanger, said hanger comprising a pair of rods having curved upper ends terminating in enlarged members spaced one with respect to the other, the lower ends of said rods and said base having cooperaing means for support of the hanger in raised position with respect to said base, writing implements for coupling and uncoupling with said member, said implements and members having cooperating means for magnetic hanger support of the implements in connection with said members, the upper end portions of said rods are crossed, said rods being joined where crossed, and the magnet being supported in the upper end portion of each of said implements.
2. A device of the character defined comprising a base, a writing implement hanger, said hanger comprising a pair of rods having curved upper ends terminating in enlarged members spaced one with respect to the other, the lower ends of said rods and said base having cooperating means for support of the hanger in raised position with respect to said base, writing implements for coupling and uncoupling with said member, said implements and members having cooperating means, for magnetic hanger support of the implements in connection with said members, the upper end portions of said rods are crossed, said rods being joined where crossed, and a magnet being supported in each of said members.
3. A device of the character defined comprising a base, a writing implement rodlike hanger, the base and lower part of the hanger having interengaging means for keying the hanger in upstanding position with respect to the base, the upper end of, the hanger terminating in an enlarged spherical member, a writing implement for coupling anduncoupling with said member, said implement and member having cooperating means for magnetic hanger support of the implement in connection with said member, said first named means comprising an aperture in the base in which the lower end of the hanger rod is mounted, and said base including means adjacent the aperture in the base engaging the lower end portion of the hanger rod in bracing the hanger rod on the base.
4. A device of the character defined comprising a base, a writing implement hanger, said hanger comprising a pair of resilient rods having curved and crossed diverging upper ends terminating in enlarged members spaced one with respect to the other, the lower end portions of said rods being tensioned toward each other in mounting the same in spaced apertures in the base, said base having keys means engaging said rods adjacent said apertures in retaining said rods in fixed upright position on the base, writing implements for coupling and uncoupling with said members, and said implements and members having cooperating means for magnetic hanger support of the implements in connection with said members.

Claims (1)

1. A DEVICE OF THE CHARACTER DEFINED COMPRISING A BASE, A WRITING IMPLEMENT HANGER, SAID HANGER COMPRISING A PAIR OF RODS HAVING CURVED UPPER ENDS TERMINATING IN ENLARGED MEMBERS SPACED ONE WITH RESPECT TO THE OTHER, THE LOWER ENDS OF SAID RODS AND SAID BASE HAVING COOPERATING MEANS FOR SUPPORT OF THE HANGER IN RAISED POSITION WITH RESPECT TO SAID BASE, WRITING IMPLEMENTS FOR COUPLING AND UNCOUPLING WITH SAID MEMBER, SAID IMPLEMENTS AND MEMBERS HAVING COOPERATING MEANS FOR MAGNETIC HANGER SUPPORT OF THE IMPLEMENTS IN CONNECTION WITH SAID MEMBERS, THE UPPER END PORTIONS OF SAID RODS ARE CROSSED, SAID RODS BEING JOINED WHERE CROSSED, AND THE MAGNET BEING SUPPORTED IN THE UPPER END PORTION OF EACH OF SAID IMPLEMENTS.
