(Cl. 46-118) This invention relates to dolls, and in particular relates to improvements in kissing type dolls.

One object of the present invention is to provide an improved doll having a compact, manually operable noise maker therein for simulating a kissing movement of the lip thereof, as well. as an accompanying kissing sound.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple, economical noise-making device adapted to be easily installed in a hollow, rubber-like doll body as a unit, to be operable with a minimum of manual effort for simulating the aforesaid kissing lip movement and kissing sound, and without necessarily requiring structural changes in available dolls provided with elastic or otherwise movable lip means.

These and, other objects. of the invention will be manifest from the following brief description and the accompa y n r n Of the accompanying drawings:

FIGURE 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away and in section, of a hollow rubber-like doll, having a kiss simulating unit of the invention incorporated therein.

FIGURE 2 is a rear elevation of the kiss simulating unit apart from the doll.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a kiss-simulating noise-maker unit, which includes a vertically extending plate or member 11 having a flat, smooth inner face 12; leaf spring 13 has a reversely bent or rounded portion 13a integrally connected to the lower edge of the plate to have an elongated upwardly extended portion 14 in substantially spaced relation to the face 12; and a rubber or like elastic suction cup 15 affixed to spring portion 14 to have the concave side 15a of the cup normally in predeterminately more closely spaced relation to face 12. The suction cup 15 may be mounted on a serrated end of a rigid spacer stem 16 which is aflixed to the upturned spring portion 14 at a point opposite the plate 11. For purposes to be described later, the leaf spring portion 14 may curve upwardly and forwardly to a terminal end 17, which is predeterminately positioned substantially above the plate 11 and adjacent the plane of the plate. The plate 11 may have a rubber or rubberlike pad 18 suitably affixed thereto to facilitate firm attachment to the unit 10 in the doll.

Referring particularly to FIGURE 1, the noise-maker unit 10 is shown attached within a hollow rubber or like elastic body 20, having spaced front and

21 and 22 and a hollow doll head 23 of similar elastic material rotatably attached thereto in known manner.

Both the body and the head are, as shown, of the type commonly produced by blown rubber molding or by rotational casting of rubber latex or polyvinyl chloride. Accordingly, the wall thickness of the body is likely to be substantially uniform, including the contoured front wall 21 simulating a stomach. The pad 18, therefore, may be of elastic material molded to conform to the inner contour of the front wall 21, and is integrally bonded thereto by suitable adhesive or heat bonding means to have the spring extension 14 closely adjacent the back wall 22 along a substantial extent thereof, as shown in FIGURE 1, and to extend upwardly and forwardly through a neck opening 24 of the doll to have the terminal I end 17 normally closely adjacent to a vulcanized or otherwise molded lip portion 25. This lip portion outwardly simulates a pair of lips adapted to be yieldingly distended by outward yielding movement of the terminal end 17 of Patented Apr. 13, 1965 the springs, to resemble a kiss-like pucker. Such movement of the terminal end 17 isaccomplished by momentarily compressing the front and rear .walls21 and 22 relatively together, yieldingly to depress the spring 13 suction attachment of the cupto be broken with a sound simulating a kiss. Simultaneously with release of the suction cop the lip portionv 25 isreleasedby the terminal end 17, thereby to allow the lip portion to be retracted by the inherent tendency thereof to resumethevulcanized shape of the same.

In use of the improved doll shown in FIGURE 1, a child may grip the doll body 20 with the fingers of one or both hands spanning portions of the front and

21 and 22, across thesection of the doll including the plate 11 and suction cup 15. Further using the fingers, the rear wall 22 is. momentarily relatively compressed toward the front wall 21 to attach the suction cup to plate 11, as shown in chain-dotted lines. At the same time the free end 17 of spring portion 14 yieldingly urges the elastic lip portion 25 of the head outwardly into a kiss-like pucker. Upon release of manual compressive force on the spring 13 the return thereof to full line position, shown in FIGURE 1, breaks the vacuum seal of the cup 15, with an audible kiss-like sound, and at the same time retraction of the terminal end 17 of the spring allows the elastic lip portion to return to its original form.

In some instances the plate 11 may be tenaciously bonded directly to the front wall of the doll body, such as by use of Plybond adhesive (a product of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company), and thereby to eliminate the need for use of the elastic pad 18. It is also contemplated that the plate 11 may have a coating of polyvinyl chloride or like synthetic resin bonded thereto, exclusive of the central portion of the rear face 12, to facilitate adhesive attachment of the plate to said front wall of the doll body.

Other modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is: 5

l. A doll comprising: a hollow body including front and rear walls and a hollow head thereon having movable lip means; a member affixed to said front wall to present a flat face inwardly thereof; suction cup means; and a resilient support normally supporting said suction cup means rearwardly spaced from said face; said support being yieldingly depressible to urge the suction-cup means into suction attachment to said face, which is made mo mentary by tension of the resilient support; said resilient support having a rigid extension terminating adjacent said lip means for corresponding momentary movement of the same said support being a reversely bent spring element attached to said member, and including an upturned portion carrying said suction-cup means, and said rigid extension being an upwardly and forwardly presented end of said upturned portion.

Claims

1. A DOLL COMPRISING: A HOLLOW BODY INCLUDING FRONT AND REAR WALLS AND A HOLLOW HEAD THEREON HAVING MOVABLE LIP MEANS; A MEMBER AFFIXED TO SAID FRONT WALL TO PRESENT A FLAT FACE INWARDLY THEREOF; SUCTION CUP MEANS; AND A RESILIENT SUPPORT NORMALLY SUPPORTING SAID SUCTION CUP MEANS REARWARDLY SPACED FROM SAID FACE; SAID SUPPORT BEING YIELDINGLY DEPRESSIBLE TO URGE THE SUCTION-CUP MEANS INTO SUCTION ATTACHMENT TO SAID FACE, WHICH IS MADE MOMENTARY BY TENSION OF THE RESILIENT SUPPORT; SAID RESILIENT SUPPORT HAVING A RIGID EXTENSION TERMINATING ADJACENT SAID LIP MEANS FOR CORRESPONDING MOMENTARY MOVEMENT OF THE SAME SAID SUPPORT BEING A REVERSELY BENT SPRING ELEMENT ATTACHED TO SAID MEMBER, AND INCLUDING AN UPTURNED PORTION CARRYING SAID SUCTION-CUP MEANS, AND SAID RIGID EXTENSION BEING AN UPWARDLY AND FORWARDLY PRESENTED END OF SAID UPTURNED PORTION.
