SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,658, dated May 12, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMORY F. LOWRY, of the town of Jamestown, county of Boone, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

My said invention consists in an improved construction of jointed horseshoes, whereby the shoe is better adapted to allow the spreading of the horses hoof, and thus remedy or prevent pinched feet, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved horseshoe; Fig. 2, an under side plan of the same; Fig. 3, a front elevation; Fig. 4, a rear elevation; Fig. 5, a perspective view of the front end of that part of the shoe on which the toecalk is formed; Fig. 6, an under side perspective of the front portion of the other part of the shoe; and Fig. 7, a cross-section through the toe, looking downwardly from the dotted line 2 2.

In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the part of the shoe on which the toe-call: is formed, and B the other part of said shoe. The part A is substantially a halfshoe, a semicircular flange, a, and the toecalk A being formed on the endof this part in addition to what would be a perfect halfshoe. The semicircular flange a is extended into the shoe, and a semicircular recess is thus formed in this end of about one-half the thickness of the shoe, into which another similar flange on the other part of the shoe fits, as will be presently more fully described. The center of this circular part is somewhat nearer the front edge of the shoe than the rear edge, and a shoulder, a, is thus formed at the rear side of the joint or hinge, which prevents the parts from closing toward each other when hinged together, except to a position to form a perfect shoe in shape. A stud or rivet, a extends up through the center of this circular part and forms the pivot for the joint or hinge of the shoe. The toecalk A extends out under the other part of (Model.)

the shoe,about half its size, and thus forms a complete covering for the joint and materially strengthens the structure.

The part B is formed with a semicircular flange, b, on its front end, which fits into the semicircular recess in the part A. The circular part is also continued into the end of this part of the shoe, as in the part A, and a recess formed, into which the semicircular flange a fits. A pivot-hole, b, in the center of this part receives the pivot a and the joint or hinge is thus completed. The joint thus formed, as will be readily understood, permits the shoe to spread slightly as the spreading of the hoof may demand; but the shoulder at the back of said joint prevents the shoe from contracting out of its normal shape.

The heel-calks a b are preferably formed with their inside faces slanting outwardly, as shown, so that, as they are borne into the dirt by the weight of the horse, they tend to spread apart, and thus spread the heel of the hoof, the previously-described joint in the toe of the shoe permitting this operation.

I am aware that the several features of this shoe are separately old; but I am not aware that any shoe has been before produced embodying all the advantages of that herein shown and described.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
