  • This invention contemplates a fastener of the general character which comprises a base strip of iiexible material such as fabric folded in such a way so as to provide a channel extending longitudinally of one side of the strip between two parallel folds inthe material, and a plurality of separate fastener elements spaced longitudinally of the strip in the channel so that portions of the side walls of the channel in the zones in which the hooking and unhooking of the fastener elements occurs shall be in effect metallic or have a metallic lining to limit lateral movement ofthe hook with respect to the eye when the hook is connected to the eye and thus protect the fabric at the side of the channels from tearing strains and from abrasion by the hook.

(Cl. 24E-228) parts to be fastened together to cooperate selectively with a hook or the like that is connected to the other `of said parts, whereby the parts, which may be for example, two portions of a garment, or two articles, can be adjustably fastened together.
This invention contemplates a fastener of the general character which comprises a base strip of iiexible material such as fabric folded in such a way so as to provide a channel extending longitudinally of one side of the strip between two parallel folds inthe material, and a plurality of separate fastener elements spaced longitudinally of the strip in the channel so that portions of the side walls of the channel in the zones in which the hooking and unhooking of the fastener elements occurs shall be in effect metallic or have a metallic lining to limit lateral movement ofthe hook with respect to the eye when the hook is connected to the eye and thus protect the fabric at the side of the channels from tearing strains and from abrasion by the hook.
yOne object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved eye element for a fastener of the character describedrhaving a bar portion extending transversely of the channel for engagement by a complemental hook, and elongated parallel portions perpendicular to said bar portion and extending along and coincidentally with opposite sides of the channel, respectively, and secured by stitches at each of opposite ends of said parallel portions to the strip, so that each fastener element shall be rmly held against movement in all directions in its own plane, the strains imposed upon the fastener elements by the hook shall be distributed in such a way as to reduce the tendency of such strains to tear the fastener elements off said strip and said parallel portions shall protect the fol-ds of the material of the strip against excessive wear and tear from engagement with the hook and shall also accurately guide the bill of the hook into hooking engagement with said bar portion.
A further object is to provide a novel and improved eye element formed of a single piece of wire and having elongated parallel portions connected at one end by a hook-engaging cross bar, and having portions at the other ends of said parallel portions formed to provide elongated loops of a length approximately equal to said parallel portions, so that the ends of the loops provide for stitching of the fastener elements to an article or strip at opposite ends of said parallel portions.

In general, the fastener contemplated by the invention comprises two sections A and B one of which includes one or more rows of eye fastener elements C with which selectively cooperates the other section B which includes a hook D for each row of fastener elements. While I have shown the application of the fastener elements C and hooks D directly to two parts to be connected, for example two parts of a garment or article, the invention more particularly is directed to a fastener wherein the eye fastener elements are connected to a strip or tape 1 that is applied to a portion of a garment or an article such as the end of a brassiere, and the hooks D are secured on a tab or strip 2 which is connected to the other portion of the garment or article, such as the other end of the brassiere.
More specifically describing the invention, the body strip 1 is shown as formed of a strip of flexible material, for example fabric, that is folded longitudinally into two plies along two parallel folds 3, then again folded longitudinally inwardly of each of the folds 3 as indicated at 4 so that portions 5 of the folded strip are folded inwardly onto the main portion of the strip, with the two folds 3 in spaced and parallel relation to each other. Another piece of material 6 is longitudinally lfolded into two plies to form folds 7 at the longitudinal edges of the piece, said piece 6 being disposed superposed relation to the main portion of the strip 1 with its folds 7 in spaced and parallel relation to the folds 3 so as to'provide two parallel channels E extending longitudinally of the strip 1 at one side thereof and each formed between one of the folds 3 and one of the folds Tand of a width greater than the width of the bill of the hook D as best shown in FIGURE 5. It should be understood that while two channels have been shown, one channel or more than two channels can be provided, and where only one channel is required, the piece 6 can be omitted and the single channel can be formed between the two rfolds 3. Also, the channels can be provided in the strip in other ways than by folding as described.
A plurality of the eye fastener elements C are shown as equally distantly spaced apart longitudinally of the strip in each channel. Each eye fastener element is shown as comprising a single piece of wire bent to form a rigid bar portion 8 connected at each end to one end of a straight side portion 9 that is disposed perpendicularly to the bar portion. The wire is bent at the other end of each of the side portions 9 as indicated at 10 to provide a straight portion 11 spaced from and parallel to the corresponding portion 9 and merging into an end portion inturned as indicated at 12 into approximate alignment with the bar portion 8.
The distance between the straight side portions 9 is approximately the same as the distance between the folds at opposite sides of a channel E, and the fastener elements are disposed on the strip with the straight portions 9 preferably flush or coincident with the corresponding folds 3 and 7 and with Ithe loop portions 10, 11 and 12 between the main portion of the strip 1 and the infolded portions 5 and the strip 6, respectively.
