H. L. RAP?.
DUMPING WAGON.
No. 317,576. Patentedlvlay 12, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. RAFF, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO JOHN SPANG, OF SAME PLACE.
DUMPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,576, dated May 12, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. RAFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of rIennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in dump-Wagons, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, and easily-operated device for hauling and dumping coal, lime, sand, and other material to be moved and dumped from the wagon-box. These objects I obtain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view in elevation of the entire device, showing the box as dumped. Fig. 2 is a view of the front end of the box, showing the fastening. Fig. 3 is a view ofthe hind end of the box, showing the removable end-gate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is a box made of any suitable material and of any desired size and shape. The front end-gate, a', may be secured in any desired way, .the hind end-gate, a, being removable when the box is loaded. rlhis is preferably accomplished by providing the side pieces with projections or ears a2 a2, to pass through the gate near its upper corners, which is supported at the bottom by resting on the bottom of the box having projecting pins a5 a?, which are secured to or through a cross-piece, a", which is attached to the extended bottom of the box.
O is a lever having a pivot, o5, and a handle, o3. To this lever, on each side of the pivot, are secured rods o o', which pass through staples o2 o2 and holes ai as of the ears when the lever is in position, as shown, but are drawn from the ears when the lever is moved, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 3, which enables the gate to be removed.
N is a clevis or strong loop, secured to the front end of the box for fastening the same in position on the frame.
P is a rack or series of cogs on a plate secured to the bottom of the box for moving the box back and forth on the frame, and near the middle of said box are attached hooks M M.
B is a frame having side pieces, b b', secured by any suitable means to the hind axle, e, and to the top of an elevated or high rocker, C, in front, which is of suiicient height to give the frame an inclination backward, so as to en able the loaded box, which rests upon cleats H H', secured on the inner front part of the said pieces b b', and the rollers Z Z upon the rod L, above and near the hind axle, to be easily moved back for being dumped.
G G are guides bolted to the frame, which extend upward and outward to receive and hold the box in position.
I is a cross-piece, against which the front end of the box rests, and beneath which the clevis N passes, for attaching the box iirmly in place on the frame. This attachment is made by means of a rod, J, secured to the pieces b b2 by means of staples jj, and is provided with or, preferably, as shown, is bent to forma hook, j, to enter the clevis, and an arm or handle, jz, for turning the said hook. The handle jz, when back, may be secured in any desired way, preferably by means of a hook, K, which is attached to the side piece, b', and in this position the hook J secures the box A upon the frame; but by turning the handle forward the box is freed to move back and forth'.
F is a cog-wheel secured to a shaft, f, having suitable bearings, f f', attached to the lower side of the frame-pieces, so that the cogs will engage the cogs of the rack P. Said shaft f has a suitable crank, f3, by which it is turned to dump the Wagon by moving the box back, and to move it forward in position for being attached.
E is a hind axle, to which the pieces b b are secured. e e are the hind and d d the front Wheels, D being the front axle, to which an ordinary tongue may be attached.
lThe device is operated thus: The box, resting upon the cleats H H and rollers Z Z, is run or moved back and forth by the cog-wheel F and rack l?. Vhen unloading, the hind endgate, a, is removed, and the box run back until IOO the hind end balances the front end up, as shownin Fig. 1. The wagon being drawn fo r- Ward, the hooks M M clasp the rod L and hold the box until it is freed from the contents and balanced back to the frame. rIhis device may be operated by a boy, as it is Worked by means of levers, and the hooks are p laced so as to permit it to be easily balanced back after dumping.
Having thus described the construction, use, and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-
1. An inclined frame composed of pieces Z) b', cross-piece I, pieces b2 b2, cleats H II', rollers ZZ, cog-Wheel F, having a shaft, f, bearings f/f, and a crank, f3, a rod, J, secured by staples j', and having a hook, j, and handle jz, al1 constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the Wheels, axles, and front rocker of a Wagon, a box A, having and hooks M M, and a frame, B, having rollers Z Z, cog-wheels F, provided with a crank, f, rod J, provided with hookj and handlejz,
hook K, cleats H H, cross-piece I, and guides G G, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.` i
