Description

' (No Model.)
, J. J.LEHMAN.
LAND ROLLER.
.ZJTL man,
WITNESSES VEN UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. LEHMAN, OFIORTLAND, MICHIGAN.
LAN D-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 1Y0. 317,552, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed January 24, 18:55.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. LEHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Ionia and State ofMichi gan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in LandBollers, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to'an improvement in land-rollers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a land-roller that embodies myinvention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
A represents a transverse beam, to the upper side of which, at a suitable distance from the center, is bolted a hound, B, which has a pole, O, Jivoted to it, as at b. To the front side of the beam A, near its outer end, is bolted a bracket, a, and a similar bracket, a, is bolted to the front side of the beam at a suitable distance from its shorter end. A roller, D, is journaled in the brackets a a. Bracerods b extend from the beam to the hound, and on the upper side of the hound, near its pivotal joint with the pole, is bolted a seatstandard, which extends rearwardly and upwardly, and has a seat, E, secured to its rear end. A supporting-knee, e, is placed between the hound and the seat-standard, and has projections e on each side of the seat-standard, which form foot-rests for the driver.
F represents a beam, which is similar to the beam Ain size and shape, and is pivoted thereto by a bolt, G. The beams A and]? are piv- (No model.)
oted together out of their centers, so as to provide each of said beams with a shorter portion and a longer portion, the longer portions extending in opposite directions, and the bolt G forms the center for the frame that is 00111- posed of the two beams, as shown. To the longer portion of the beam F, on its rear side, are bolted brackets f, which are similar to the brackets a and a, and in these brackets is journaled a roller, H, that is similar to the roller D.
By having the beams to which the rollers are journaled pivoted together, as described, each of the rollers is permitted to adjust itself vertically.independently of the other, which adds greatly to the efficiency of the roller over the form now in common use, in which one long roller is employed, or over the form in which two or more rollers are bolted to an inflexible frame or beam.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the beams A F, arranged parallel to each other and pivoted together by bolt G, the hound B, bolted to beam A, braces b for the hound, pole O, pivoted to the hound, brackets a a, bolted to beam A, roller D, journaled in said brackets, and brackets ff, bolted to beam F, and roller H, journaled in said brackets, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. F. Monnnousn, WILLIAM HUNT.
