FASTENING FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,540, dated May 12,1885.
Application filed January 28, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOBART B. IvEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in sash-fasteners, and has for its object to provide a means for locking thelatch of the sashfastener, so that when the latch is locked it will unlock only by the turn of the sash-lock crank.
The invention consists in alocking-notch inafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sash-fastener. Fig. 2 shows the latch mounted upon the base-plate. Fig. 3- shows a top view of the base-plate. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section. Fig. 5 shows the crank mounted upon the latch. Fig. 6 shows the under side of the crank, and Fig. 7 a side view of the latch.
In the drawings, A denotes the latch of my improved sash-fastener. It is mounted upon a base-plate, B, which is secured to the meeting-rail of the lower sash. The latch is adapted to oscillate through about one-quarter of a revolution and engage ahook, D, raised upon a base-plate, C, secured to the meeting-rail of the upper sash. It is very essential that the latch shall remain locked when engaged with the hook D, so that it will turn only by the movement of its crank E. To this end the baseplate B is formed with a raised surface, F,conforming in size and shape to the body of the latch. A portion of this raised surface is cut away on one side, so as to leave a straight inclined edge, G, forming a guide.
In the opposite side of the raised part F a notch, H, is formed, and in the center of the surface is a perforation, 13.

Constructed as above described and shown, the operation of my sash-fastener is as follows: The latch A is mounted upon the baseplate B, with the projections m m downward. The crank E is mounted upon the latch, with the projection s in the slot 0 and the stud 1 pass ing down through the slot at and perforation i iu'the base-plate, and also through a washer, t, over which it is riveted, thus securing a the parts of the fastener in place. As the crank E is rotated through a quartenturn, the projection 8 drives the latch around till it engages the hook it, and at the same instant the projection m on the latch strikes the inclined edge G on the base-plate. Another quarterturn of the crank carries the projection m along the guiding-edge G, and simultaneously moves the short projection s in the slot 0 in the latch, and by the joint action of these parts the latch A is moved laterally across the base-plate, clamping the sashes together, and also drawing the projection m into the notch H, out of which it can be moved only by turning the crank in a reverse direction. The raised part F being as large asthe body of the latch, the notch H is at such a distance from the center of the stud 1 that there is little vibration of the latch, even when the projection m fits loosely into the notch H, which it must necessarily do, as the parts of the lock are put together just as they come from the foundry without fitting or finishing.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the base plate 13, having central perforation, z, notch H, and guiding-edge G, of the latch A, and crank E, all constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
