EMBROIDERING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES! SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,509, dated May 12, 1885.

To all whom, it may concern Beit known that I, FRANKLIN H. CHILTON,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and 5 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embroidering Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in embroidering attachments for sewing-machines; and it consists in the novel mechanism, hereinafter described, for laying the embroidering thread in what is known as the cycloidal chain.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of an attachment embodying the elements of the invention. Fig.2 is a front end view of same. Fig. 3 is a side view of same taken from the side of the attachment opposite to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top view of the attachment; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are detached views illustrating the various positions of the threadcarrying arm during the formation of the stitch, and are referred to hereinafter.
In the drawings, A denotes the supporting frame or bracket of the attachment. It is secured to the presser-foot bar of the sewing machine by a screw, B, and has pivoted upon its rear portion the actuatinglever O, the front end of which is bifurcated and encompasses the needle-screw, as indicated. The foot D of the attachment consists of the hori zontal portion a and vertical portion 1), the part lettered a being cut away at d to form a space wherein the embroidering-stitches may be formed and sewed to the fabric. The actuating-lever G has cut in it the cam-slot E, consisting of the parts of, and in the slot is confined the pin F, secured upon the face of the lever G which is pivoted upon the side of the bracket or frame A. The lower end of the lever G is bifurcated and incloses the bar H between the stops I, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, whereby, when the lever G is given a reciprocating motion during the actuation of 50 the lever O by the needle-bar, the bar H will have a horizontal sliding movement backward (Model.)
' and forward in line with the length of the attachment. The front portion of the bar H passes through an aperture, i, in the front wall of the bracket A, the pinion m, and support n, and the rear portion of said bar passes through an aperture in the lower end of the hanger J. The front extremity of the bar H is bent at right angles to the main portion thereof, as indicated in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, and
is supplied with the horizontal lip tand pin a, the pin being in line with the main portion of the bar H and located slightly above the lip t, as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6. During the operation of the attachment the horizontal lip t is at the proper time turned uppermost, and when in this condition the pin a will of course appear as being located below it. The bar H is angular in cross-section, and the aperture in the pinion m, through which it passes, in outline conforms thereto; hence,
and remains there at all times, while the short er arm 1 passes under the lever 0 when the latter is elevated, the upward movement of the lever O causing the lever M to rotate and throw the arm P beneath it. The rack N engages the pinion m. Stops w z y are arranged upon the face of the bracket M in proper relation to come in contact with the lever M and check its movement at the proper time.
The working parts of the attachment receive their movement from the needlebar of the machine through the lever O. The lever 5 0 when in motion acts upon the lever G through the pin F and the portion 6 of the camslot E. During the movement of the pin F in the part 6 of the cam-slot the lever G has an oscillating movement on its pivot, and operm7 ates, as hereinbefore described, to give the bar H a sliding movement. WVhen, during the motion of the lever G, the pin F enters the lower portion, f, of the cam-slot E the lever G will remain at rest; and when the pin F has entered the portion a of said cam-slot the lever G will come in contact with the arm 0, moving it upward, whereby the segmental rack N on the lever M will be moved toward said lever and cause the rotation of the pinion m in a corresponding direction, whereby the bar H will have a semi-rotation, turning its bent front end toward the lever O, as indicated in Fig. 7. Upon the descent of the lever 0 its lower edge will strike the end of the arm P and reverse the movement of the rack N,pi11- ion m, and bar H, and during said descent of the lever C, after said parts have been re versed, the pin F will enter the portion 6 of the cam-slot E, and at this time the lever G will move the bar H to its former position. While the lever C is depressed the bar H is in the position shown in Fig. 5. When said lever has been sufficiently elevated to bring the pin F to the center of the slot E, the bar H will have been moved to the position illustrated in Fig. 6, andthen, upon the further upward movement of the lever O, the lever M will rotate the pinion m, which will have the effect of turning the bent end of the bar H toward the lever G, as hereinbefore described, and as indicated in Figs. 2 and 7. The bar H is first moved forward, th en turned toward the lever O, and is afterward reversed and moved backward. It being considered that the lever O is depressed, the embroidering'thread is passed from a suitably-placed spool across the front bent endof the arm H between the lip t and pin u and thence into the space (1 and beneath the foot D. Upon the elevation of the lever O the thread and bar H are moved forward to the front part of the foot, as shown in Fig. 6, and upon the subsequent turning of the bar H toward the lever C the embroideringihread is formed into a trian gularshaped loop, as represented in Fig. 7 ,into which loop the sewingneedle passes and carries the sewing-thread across that portion of the embroiderin g-thread which extends from the point of the bar H. At this time the bar H is turned from the lever G and the embroidering-thread gradually slips from its bent end, being now supported only by the pin u, after which the bar H is moved rearward to the position shown in Fig. at, and in this movement the pin u is withdrawn from the embroidering-loop, which, being now free, will be drawn taut upon the fabric in the customary way. Upon the return of the bar H to its rear position its bent end will come in proper relation to the em broidering-thread to carry it forward as before and form another loop in the manner above described.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The frame A, having a presser-foot, D, and provided with means whereby it may be attached to the presser-bar of a sewing-machine, in combination with the thread-carrying arm H, arranged over and in line with the length of the foot D, a lever for giving the arm H a direct sliding movement, and a rack and pinion for imparting a rotary movement to said arm at the end of its forward stroke, whereby the bent front end of the arm H is caused to turn the embroidering-thread toward and in front of the sewing-needle only at the completion of the forward stroke of said arm, substantially as set forth.
2. In an embroidering attachment for sewinganachines, the supporting-bracket A, havin g a foot, D, combined with the thread-carrying arm H, having its front end extending at substantially right angles to the main portion thereof, and provided with a lip, t, along its lower edge, and a pin,u, in line with the body of said arm, means for giving said arm a sliding movement, and means, substantially as described, for imparting to it a rotary movement at the end of its forward stroke, whereby its front end is turned to a position in front of the sewingneedle, the lip t being at this time above the embroidering'thread, substaa tially as set forth.
3. The frame A, provided with a presser- -'foot, D, and means for permitting its attachment to the presser-bar of a sewingniachine, in combination with the thread-carrying arm H, arranged horizontally over and in line with FRANKLIN H. CHILTON.
