UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VVINFIELD S. OHAPLIN, CF SOHENEGTADY, NEIV YORK.
FLUSH-TANK F OR WATER-CLOSETS, SEWERS, 84C.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 317,505, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed October 23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. CI-IAPLIN, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flush-Tanks for Water-Closets, Sewers, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to flushing apparatus for sewers, water-closets, and the like.
The invention consists in an arrangement of mechanism whereby a siphon is suddenly lowered so as to discharge the whole or a part of the contents of a tank in which the siphon is placed; also, in the details of construction and combinations of mechanism hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical central section of a tank having an outflow-pipe with collapsible section. Fig. 2 is a similar section of tankand siphon. Fig. 3 is a similar view of tank and siphon, with a modified construction for lowering the inner tube of siphon; Fig. 4, a plan section of Fig. 3 on line :10 a".
A represents the storage-tank, in which is the siphon, composed of outlet-tube B, having an extensible and collapsible portion, and inclosing-tube E, which communicates with tank A, as by apertures e c. A receptacle, D, having a large hole in its bottom, is attached to pipe B by a flexible or elastic connection. In
' Figs. 1 and 2 this connection is shown as an elastic tube, 0, held expandedby rings 0. In Figs. 3 and 4. the part 0 is an elastic or flexible diaphragm, one edge being attached to a receptacle, D, and the other to pipe B. The connection will be water-tight. The upward movement of receptacle D may be accelerated by a weight, as F, which is placed inside the cas in g E, orin an extension thereof, and connected to receptacle D by a lever, f, pivoted at g. The weight will be adjustable. The rise of water in tank A will cause a pressure on diaphragm G, and as soon as this pressure overcomes the weight F the diaphragm will be collapsed, and the water will rush over the top of receptacle D, and so through the escape pipe B to the sewer or closet to be flushed. In like manner the water rushing over the top of the receptacle, in the modification shown in Fig. 2, will collapse the flexible tube, and
-in either case the water will rush out through pipe B until the level of the water in tank A is reduced to that of the top of receptacle 1) in its lowermost position.
It will be seen that no valves are necessary with this apparatus, and that the flushing operation will be repeated as often as the water rises to the requisite height in tank A.
In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 the casing E is omitted, and the tank itself made to serve as one member of the siphon.
I. claim 1. In combination with a flush-tank, an out- I flow or flush pipe, a receptacle with a passage through it, and a flexible water-tight connection between the outflow-pipe and said receptacle, all relativelyarranged to operate substantially as described.
2. In combination with a flush-tank, an
inclosin g pipe or casin g (as E) therein, an outflow-pipe, B, and a receptacle, D, having a passage therethrough, inclosed in said pipe E, and connected to the mouth of said outletpipe by a flexible water-tight connection, sub stantially as described. 3. In combination with the csoapapipe B, the flexible diaphragm secured by one edge to the end thereof, the receptacle D, secured to the other edge of said diaphragm, and an inclosing pipe or casing, E, all constructed and relatively arranged substantially as described.
4. The combination, with aflush-tank, of an inclosing-casing, as E, an escape-pipe, B, a receptacle, D, and a flexible diaphragm connecting the same to the escape-pipe, and a weight, F, connected to receptacle D by a lever, substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
