UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE KERN, OF KOKOMO, INDIANA.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
."JPECIF ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.317,3'75, dated May 5, 1885.
Application filed August 26, 1384. (No model.)
T 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE KERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Syringes, of which the following is a description.
The object of this invention is, first, to close the vaginal canal, and then to lave or medicate the parts beyond the inclosure by means of one and the same device.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a vaginal syringe, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my invention in its normal condition, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same distended as in service.
A represents the discharge-pipe of a handsyringe of any common style.
B is the inner tube of my syringe, which is connected at one end with the pipe A and closed at the other end. Near this other end I provide one or more side openings,.0, to the interior of the tube. Each side of these openings I secure packing-rings D of any suitable 'elastic material, thus making the tube a piston fitting into the outer tube or cylinder E.
F is an annular bag secured around the cyli nder E, and G is a hole in the cylinder serving as a passage to and from the bag. H is a spherical terminus to the eylinderE, provided with various outlets I.
The operation of the device is as follows: Having inserted it in the vagina, extend the cylinder along the piston until the opening C registers with the passage G. Then distend the bag by pumping in air or water with the handsyringe until the bag closely fills the vaginal canal. Now push the piston through the cyl inder until the opening 0 is inside the spherical terminus. Then any gas, air, or fluid may be pumped by the same hand-syringe into the vagina beyond the bag, and be retained by the bag acting as aplug. Thus the neck and mouth of the womb may be bathed or medically treated. To remove the device, first withdraw the piston. This opens a passage by which the bag may dischargeits contents. Then remove the cylinder. The space in the cylinder between the passage G and the interior of the terminus H is greater than the space between the packings D, so that communication cannot be had through the piston-tube with both the bag and the terminus at once.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combinati0n,with a tubular piston open at its rear end, closed at its forward end, open at the sides near the forward end, and provided with packing before and behind the said side openings, of a cylinder fitted to receive the said piston, and provided with aperforated spherical end, apertures in its sides, and an annular bag secured around the cylinder, the interior of the bag and of the cylinder being connected by the said apertures in the sides of the cylinder, as shown and described.
