Description

J. H. SEARS & B. MERRIT'L BRIGK ELBVATOR.
N0. 31.728. Patented Mar. 19. 1861.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
B. MERRITT, OB CHELSEA, AND J. H. SEARS, OF BOSTON, MASSAGHUSETIS.
BRICK-ELEVA'IOR.
Speqification of Letters Patent N0. 31,728, dated March 19, 1861.
T0 all whom z't may conckzm:
Be .it known that We, BENJAMIN MERRITT, of Chelsea, ancl JABEZ H. SEARS, of Bosto'n. county of Sufiolk, and State 01: Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Brick- Elevator, of which the following is a full,
clear, ancl ex'act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, mak ing part of this specification, in Which Figure l is a perspective view 0f the ele vator. Fig. 2 a view of one of the hods.
We are aware that bricks a-nd other ma terials have been raisecl by an elevacor cousising of enclless ohains carried over drums or windlasses, the chains carrying buckets 01" hocls in Which the article to be raised was placed. In these the bricks wl1en raised t0 the required height, were either removed by band frorh the hod or wem emptied in a confusecl heap 011130 a plabform 01 into a box placecl to receive them. This either necessitatecl repeated handling of the bricks, or risked breaking them.
The object 0f our present invention is t0 produce an elevator, which after raising the bricks to the required height, Will discharge them nicely packed into the ordinary shoulder hocl 01' other receptacle, without breaking them, and without the necessity of aga.in handling them to pack them.
Our invention consists in so combining tl1e elevating hocl, the enclless chains, ancl a series of ins 011 the elevating drun1, that when the hod has been raisecl to the requirecl height, it shall be carriecl over laterally towarcl the floor or platfonn on Wlll(}ll the receiving hocl is placecl, ancl be tilted 01 turneol over in such a manner as to empty its loal 0f bricks into the receivin 110d, without clisturbing their regular 01' er; so as not to require their repacking in the shouloler hod, ancl without (langer of breaking them.
That others skillecl in the art may understancl ancl use our invention WG Will proceecl to describe the manner in Wl1i0h we have carriecl out the same.
In the said drawings A represents the fioor 0f the builcling, to which the bricks are t0 loe elevated; B, B, two heavy braces or arms, which are secured in any suitable manner to the floor, and project over its edge (01' over a hatch way or opening left in the several floors 0f' the builcling 130 accommodate the elevator). These braces B serve as bearings for the axle a of a. drum C Which ca.rries 011 each of its heads an endless cha'in D of sufiicierit length to reach the lower floor 01 the level from wl1ich the bricks are to be raisecl, where each chain passes around the head of another drum 01 windlass E, the axle b of whieh l1as its bearings in the sides of a frame F. Power is appliecl t0 the windlass E fiom a crank d on asl1ort shaft which earries a pinion c, Which engages with a 00g wheel e on the end 0f the axle b. The heads f of the wincllass E as well as the head of the drun1 C are composed of three arms set in a triangular position, and each of which is furnished at its outer encl with a hook 5, over Whi0h the endless chain D is distended, the links z of the chain being of tl1e proper length to folcl around the hooks, which engage with not-ches 6 in the chain and prevents its slipping.
The heaol hof the clrum C is a disk, in Which the hooks 5 are set in a triangula.r position, ancl a't distances corresponcling with the hooks in the other heads, and over Which the chain asses in a similar manner. This disk also has projecting fr0m its face, three pins 7 set in a. smaller triangle than the pins 5.
An elevating box or hod G (shown detached in Fig. 2) has attachecl to it a.t each end a leg 0r bar l which is pivotecl at 8 to one 0f the links z of the chain D. Thema is also attached to one end of this hocl by a pivot 9, a latch m Which is helcl down by a spring n. A notch in one end of this latch engages With the end of the link v1, which is bent 0ver at 10 for this purpose. This pre Vents the 110d fronf1 turning 011 the pivot 8. The other end of this latch is beveled ofi as shown at 11. H is an ordinary shoulder 110d placed ina.n inclinecl position 011 the fl0or A, t0 receive the bricks ;0 which have been regularly packecl in the elevating 110d.
Any convenient number of elevating hods G may be attached t0 ehe chains D; ancl these chains may be lengthenecl as requirecl by adding more links z.
The folloWing is the operation of this elevator: The hocl G being packed With lbricks p, the windlass is turnecl in the direction of the arrow l, until t-l1e hod has been raised to the drum C, when tl1e latch m strikes one of tl1e pins 7 ancl unlatches the hod from the chain, the inclined end 11 0f t-he latch :at the szune time throws the 110d toward the floor A, the hod turning 0n its pivots 8. As the drum C continues t0 revolve, the hod G is tilted over still farther until it empties the bricks p into the hod H, placing them in the sa1ne regular order which tl1ey occupied in the hod G. A further revolution of the drum C lifts the hod G clear of the hod H and carries it over the drm when the bar Z striking one of the pins 7 lorings the hod back to its normal position, and the latch m locks it With the link A p1n 3 on the hod strikes the link z and stops the hod, Which is then carried down in a reversed osition as shown at G t0 pass under the windlass and be again filled.
It will be perceived that by the combination and arrangement in triangular positions of the pins 5 and 7, a considerable lateral motion is given t0 the hod G to carry it over the edge of the floor A as required.
Mortar 01 other materials may in the same way be elevatecl in the hools G and be emptied into asuitable receptacle on the floor A.
At I is shown the manner in Which an ordinary shoulder hod. 1nay be sent up on the chains Da small hook 0 .at each end of lt, hooking over pins projecting from the inner side of the opposite links z.
In some cases we propose to apply the hoisting power 130 the upper drum 01' windlass C.
What we claim as of our invention, anti desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination 0f the swiveling hods Gr, latch m, and pins 7, with the enclless chain D, the whole arranged and operating as described for the purposes set forph.
2. The arrangement 0f the pins 5, and 7, in triangular positions f01 the purpose of giving the greatest amount of lateral throvv to the hod G, as and for the purpose described.
