(Cl. 42-79) This invention relates to extensions for shotgun barrels and more particularly to an attachment which can be secured to and removed from the barrel of the shotgun.

It has heretofore been proposed to apply extensions to gun barrels for the purpose of increasing the length. Such a device is shown in the patent to-Jones, No. 1,605,741. It has also heretofore been proposed to apply muzzle brakes and chokes or other pattern control attachments/to the muzzle of a gun. Instances of such attachments are shown in Patent Nos. 1,773,260, 2,098,- 617, 2,484,988 and 2,977,702.

The attachments for gun barrels heretofore available had various objectionable characteristics such as requiring cutting of the barrel to shorten the same before connec: tion of the attachment, requiring permanent anchoring of the receiver to the gun barrel, requiring boring or turning of the muzzle end of the barrel, requiring silver soldering or shrinking of parts for connection of the attachment, or requiring grooving of the outside of the muzzle end of the barrel.

Other attachments for gun barrels scored or damaged the surface of the muzzle end of the gun barrel, required removal of the front sight, or could not be attached to gun barrels having ventilating ribs.

It is the principal object of the present invention to provide an attachment for gun barrels which lacks the many shortcomings of attachments heretofore available.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide an attachment for gun barrels which can be quickly and easily attached to existing gun barrels without modification or change thereof, which can be made in relatively few sizes to accommodate a large number of models of shotguns.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide an attachment for gun barrels which can have the desired choke action and which can be readily replaced with an attachment having a different selected choke action if desired.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide an attachment for gun barrels which can, if desired, carry an extension of the ventilating rib.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide an attachment for gun barrels by which, if desired, the effective length of the barrel can be changed.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide an attachment for gun barrels by which the action of the barrel can be quickly and easily changed to accommodate different types of shooting, i.e. rapidly moving targets at close range or skeet targets, or for handicap trap shooting or for shooting ducks or geese.

Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.

The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, in which;

It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawingsherein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes can be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention. i

Referring now more particularly'to the drawings the muzzle end of a gun barrel 10 is shown, having a ventilating rib 11 thereon, and a front sight 12.

The attachment comprises a tube or sleeve 15, of alloy steel, in longitudinal axial alignment with the barrel 10. The sleeve 15 has opposite

terminal end faces

16 and 17, anexterior enlargement extending longitudinally from the end face 16 in the form of an annular rim 18, with a shoulder portion '19 of reduced external diameter having a fileted connection, and a main exterior surface 21 having a fileted connection 22 and extending to the end face 17. v p

Extending inwardly from the end face 16, a slot 24 of predetermined width is provided to accommodate the ventilating rib 11 on the barrel 10, and of a length as referred to below. Ribs 11 to be accommodated may have widths of A", A and /2, dependent upon the particular make and model.

Withinthe interior of the sleeve 15 and extending inwardly from the end face 16 a first bore 26 is provided, terminating at a shoulder 27, for the reception of a steel ring 28 having a slot 29 of substantially the same width as the slot 24, to clear the rib 11. Extending inwardly from the bore 27 a second bore 30 is provided, terminating at a shoulder 31, of smaller diameter than the bore 27 to accommodate and engage with the outer end of the muzzle of the gun barrel 10. The slot 24 is terminated in spaced relation to the shoulder 31 as determined by the end of the rib 11.

While the internal diameter of the bore 30 may be varied as desired an internal diameter of 0.840 inch has been found suitable for a large number of different gun barrels 10. Certain gun barrels will require an internal diameter of the bore 30 of the order of 0.812 inch.

The rim 18 has a plurality of set screws 32, three being preferred, radially disposed therein and engaging the ring 28 to force the same into tight gripping engagement with the barrel 10. The rim 18 is of suflicient thickness and length to be rigid and free from deformationwhen the screws 32 are tightened.

The second bore 30 has, extending inwardly therefrom and to the end face 17, a third bore 33. The bore 33 can have any desired shape, in accordance with the choke action desired. The bore 33 can accordingly be of uniform diameter from end to end as in FIG. 3, or inwardly from the face 17 as in FIG. 4 can have a concentric cylindrical portion 33a of slightly reduced diameter to a tapered or frusto conical connecting portion in advance thereof to provide a partial choke of the desired extent or a full choke, in a manner well known in chokes now available.

While the attachment as described is suitable for many purposes, including use with gun barrels having ventilating ribs 11 it can be used with barrels not so equipped. The sleeve 15, if desired, can have an auxiliary ventilating rib 34 secured thereto by screws 35 engaging in blind threaded holes 36 in the sleeve 15.

The attachment, with the bore 33 of the desired character, can be readily slid on the muzzle end of a gun barrel 10, with the barrel end engaging the shoulder e9 31. The set screws 32 are then tightened and the gun is ready for use. The attachment can be quickly removed, if desired, by loosening the set screws 32 and manually drawing the attachment from the barrel 19. Another attachment having a difierent bore 33, can be quickly applied and fastened in place if desired.

It will thus be seen that an attachment for gun barrels has been provided with which the objects of the invention are attained.

I claim:

1. An attachment for a shotgun comprising a sleeve having an enlarged external rim at one end thereof and a slot extending inwardly from said one end, said sleeve having one end for the reception of the muzzle end of a shotgun barrel, said one end having an internal bore within said rim, a ring in said bore for clamping engagement with the exterior of said muzzle end, fastening members in said rim for urging said ring into engagement with said muzzle end, said sleeve having a bore extending inwardly from the other end for controlling the shot pattern.

2. An attachment for a shotgun as defined in claim 1 in which a bore is interposed between said aforementioned bores with an end shoulder for seating engagement by the end of the barrel.

3. An attachment for a shotgun as defined in claim 1 in which said fastening members in said rim comprise three radially disposed circumferentially spaced set screws.

4. An attachment for a shotgun as defined in claim 1 having an auxiliary ventilating rib secured thereto on the exterior thereof and aligned with said slot.

5. An attachment for a shotgun as defined in claim 1 in which said last bore is of uniform diameter.

6. An attachment for a shotgun as defined in claim 1 in which said last bore provides at least a partial choke.

7. An attachment for the muzzle end of a shotgun barrel having a ventilating rib therealong comprising a sleeve having an enlarged external rim at one end thereof and a slot extending inwardly from said end for the reception of the rib, said sleeve having a first internal bore at one end thereof within said rib, a second internal bore extending from said first bore for the seating of the muzzle end of the gun barrel, and a third bore longitudinally axially aligned with and extending from said second bore to the other end of said sleeve, an annular ring in said first bore having a slot aligned with said first mentioned slot, a plurality of radially extending threaded members in said rim and engaging said ring to urge the same inwardly into engagement with said muzzle end, said first mentioned slot being terminated in spaced relation from the inner end of said second bore.

8. An attachment for a shotgun as defined in claim 7 in which said third bore is of uniform diameter.

9. An attachment for a shotgun as defined in claim 7 in which said third bore is shaped to provide at least a partial choke.

10. An attachment for a shotgun as defined in claim 7 having an auxiliary ventilating rib secured thereto on the exterior thereof aligned with said slot.
