Description
UNITED sTATEs PATENT CHARLES PERLEY, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
SHIPS CAPSTAN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,619, dated March 5, 1861.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES PERLEY, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Capstans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1, is a vertical section of a capstan with my improvement. Fig. 2, is a plan of the lower nest of friction balls-and Fig. 3, is a plan of the upper nest of balls.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
In Letters Patent granted to ine for an improvement in capstans under date of October 21, 1856, will be found a set of balls sustaining the weight of the capstan and revolving in an annular oil cup. In that case however as well as in all other capstans with which I am acquainted the barrel revolved against the vertical spindle` so that when strain comes upon the barrel from a chain or rope the journal bearings take directly against the vertical spindle or axis. Capstans are used but seldom, and from standing still under exposure to moist atmosphere the spindle becomes rusty and often the barrel is rusted fast or moves with so much friction as to be almost useless under circumstances of the greatest necessity.
The nature of my said invention consists in fitting 'the capstan barrel with two nests of balls in such a manner that the sidewise strain from a rope or chain is taken upon balls between the' capstan barrel and t-he spindle upon which it turns so that there is no opportunity for the surfaces to rust together and create friction and the lower nest of balls sustain the weight of the capstan thus performing the two functions; and the' upper nest of balls holds vthe capstan down in case of a rope leading off at an up-r ward inclination.
In the drawing' a, is the base of the capstan; is the barrel; c, the handspike head; e, the vertical axis or spindle; and f the pawl bed to take the pawls all of which parts are of any desired size or shape; or fitted in any of the usual methods.
The lower part of the capstan barrel is formed as a circular recess 1, to take over thenest of balls 2, that rest in a shallow groove in the base a.
3. is a circular recess in the upper end of the capstan barrel receiving` the nest of balls 4, and 5 is a cap plate secured by the pin 6. The bushes of the capstan that pass the central axis c, are larger than said axis so as not to touch the same, hence the capst-an rolls on and is sustained by the balls alone in all directions, either when resting on the balls 2; or revolving with the balls 2 and 1, between itself and the axis c, taking the sidewise strain, or when drawn by the action of an upward inclined rope or chain so as to cause the balls 41. to press upon and roll against the cap plate 5. Thus all possibility of the capstan rusting fast is removed and the friction in all directions is on rolling surfaces.
It will be evident that the capstan barrel or head when placed horizontally or in the form of a winch or windlass for ropes or chains, and provided with the balls as aforesaid, will insure the advantages set forth.
That I claim and desire `to secure by Letters Patent is- The capstan or other barrel for ropes or chains provided with the circular recesses 1, and 3, receiving the nests of balls 2 and 4, in the manner and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this `thirteenth day of Febf ruary 1861.
CHARLES PERLE Y.
Vitnesses LEMUEL W. SEERELL, CI-IAs. H. SMITH.
