WITJVESSES NWN/TOR Attorney Nrrn STATES WELLINGTON L. PARMELEE, OF DEEP RIVER, CONNECTICUT.
CARPET-FASTWEB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,169, dated April 21, 1885.
Application filed any 14, 1884. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may. concern/.-
Be it known that I, WELLINGTON L. FARME- LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deep River, in the county ot' Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referen ce being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my invention, showing it in use; Fig. 2, a sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 detail views in perspective ofthe two parts composing the fastener, showing them detached from each other.
The present invention has relation to that class of carpet-fasteners operated by a cam device to force the claw down through the carpet to the iloor. Previous to my invention it was common to provide the claw with a laterallyelongated slot, andan eccentric jou rnal, located therein, which has a head extending through a hole in a guide-plate affixed to the base-board by screws. This protruding head of the eccentric journal is nicked, to receive a screwdriver when it is desired to turn the journal in the laterally-elongated slot, which either raises or lowers the claw, as the case may be. In order to operate the claw it is necessary to beprovided with a lscrew-driver or other like tool, and frequently it is not readily at hand, thus making it very annoying to the person laying down the carpet.
It is the object of the invention to improve the construction of the above-mentioned class ot' carpet-fasteners, whereby no screw-driver or other tool is necessary to operate it, which object I attain by the construction substantially as shown, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the base-board'to which my improved carpetfastener-is secured, and B represents the carpet.
The fastener consists of a rectangular metal plate, C, provided at its lower end with a suitable claw, a, adapted to pass through the carpet and enter the iioor. The plate C is secured to the base-board A by a screw, b, which passes through an elongated slot, c, thus allowing the plate to slide up and down a distance equal to the length of the slot.
To the plate C is connected a presser-foot, D, by a screw, d, passing through a perforation in the foot and through an elongated slot, e, in the plate C, which allows the presser-foot to be moved on the arc' of a circle, as shown in dotted' lines, Fig. l; or, in other words, the foot is pivotcd. The slots in the plate C admit of the plate sliding up and down Without interfering with the movement of the presserfoot, both operating independent of the other.
rIhe presser-foot D has a bearing-flange, f, on the arc of a circle, so that, when the flange comes in contact with the claws a, and the foot is brought to an upright position, it will act as a cam to press the claws through the carpet in the floor, and be held in this position by engaging the handle g of said foot with a keeper, h, formed on the upper end of the plate C.
The shank or handle of the presser-foot is bent outwardly, so that it can move on the arc o f a circle without striking against the keeper h, and still engage therewith when required.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a carpet-fastener, an upright and vertically-slotted plate provided at itslower end with aclaw and at its upper end with a keeper, in combination with a pivot-ed presser-foot provided with a cam-bearing flange, and having a handle for operating it, and bent, as shown, so as to engage with the keeper upon the end of the upright plate, substantially7 as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
VELLINGTON L. PARMELEE.
