CONSTRUCTION AND PRESERVATION OF SHINGLE ROOFS.

Be it known that I, HENRY WHITNEY GATES, of Kennedy, town of Poland, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Construction and Preservation of Shingle Roofs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip-- tion of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side View of a portion of a shingle roof to which my improvement has been applied, and Fig. 2 is a vertical trans verse sectional view of the same.

The same letters refer to the same parts in both the figures.

This invention relates to shingle roofs; and it contemplates certain improvements in the construction of the same looking toward the preservation of the roofing material, and hence to the increased durability of aroof constructed in the main of ordinary shingles.

The invention, with these ends in view, consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A A designate the sides of a roof, in the general con struct-ion of which no novelty is herein claimed. B is the ridge-cap, which is an inverted-V- shaped cap constructed of ordinary sheet- 0 C are the shingles, which are laid so as to cover or form the roof in the ordinary manner, with the exception that narrow strips of sheeteinc are arranged underneath and allowed to project below the lower edges of several of the rows of shingles, as shown at D D.

WVhen a shingle roof constructed in this manner is exposed to the weather, the moisture will oxidize the zinc of the ridge-cap B and strips D D, and as the moisture trickles down, the shingles are thus treated with a solution of zinc oxide, which tendsto their preservation from rot and decay and to prevent the growth of mosses and other destructive vegetable substances.

Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a shingle roof, an overlapping ridgecap constructed of zinc, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. A shingle roof constructed with a strip or strips of zinc interposed between the rows of shingles, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a shingle root, a strip of zinc interposed betweentwo rows of shingles and extending below the lower edge of the upper or overlapping row, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A shingle roof provided with plates or strips of zinc so arranged that rain or other moisture shall be deflected from such plates or strips onto the shingles, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

5. A shingle roof provided with a ridge-cap of zinc overlapping the shingles on both sides, andastrip or strips of zinc interposed between the shingles, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
