Description
UNITED STA ES- PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW KRIEGER, or ooLUMBUs, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES onnnmor T SAME PLACE.
PROTECTORTOR INSERTI BLE SAW-TE ETH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,419, dated April '7, 1885.
Applitalion filed February 19, 1895. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ANDREW KRIEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shank-Protectors for Inserted Saw-Teeth; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken through where lines new are marked on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the holder-plate with the protector attached.
This invention has relation to means for protecting inserted saw-teeth; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a section of. an insertible-tooth saw having the openings B, which form the seats for the teeth 0, and the wedges or holders D, adapted to hold the teeth securely in place. The lower end of the holderplate extends forward along the front of the shank of the tooth, and is made with a transverse dovetail seat-not ch, E, in its forward edge, which is adapted to receive adovetailed lug, F, formed on the rear face of the protectorG. This protector for the holder-plate or mouth-piece consists of a single small elongated strip of metal, which conforms to the shape of the forward edge of the end of the protector-plate, and is usually or preferably f+o made a little wider across its face than the thickness of said holder-plate, in order to relieve the sides as well as the front of this end of the mouth-piece. It also serves to protect the shank of the tooth. from being worn away 45 on the sides, preventing the friction caused by the. sides of the shank becoming worn, and permitting the sawdust to escape between the saw and log.
It will be observed that after the protector is placed in position the sides of the lug may be hammered a little to prevent said protector from becoming disengaged from the mouthpiece. When the latterbecoines worn by use, i it can be removed and readily replaced by another.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1s The combination, with a mouthpiece or 6o. holder-platetorinsertiblesaw-teeth having the dovetail transverse notch in its forward edge, of the detachable protector constructed toconform to the shape of the forward edge of the mouth-piece,and provided with thetransverse 6 dovetail lug adapted to engage the notch in, the mouth-piece, whereby the said protector is l secured-thereto, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses. a
ANDREW KRIEGEB. I
