MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
' SPECIFICATION forming pari'. of Letters Patent No. 315,378,6lated April' 7, 1885. Y
'Application filed January 29,V 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may'conaerrt:
Beit known that I, JEROME BACON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Mechanical Movements; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a face view ot' my device. Fig. 2is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to mechanical powers for driving donblegeared machines; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed outin the appended claims. i In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the end of an ordinary wringing machine, to which my invention is represented as applied.
B indicates the upper shaft or journal, hav ing the gear-wheel C, which engages the gea wheel D of the lower shaft, E.
F is a brace applied byits upper end on the shaft or journal outside ofthe gear, and'by the lower end to the edge of the tub or other bearing. This brace is designed to steady the machine at the operating side during the action of the lever.
G is the operating-lever, which is designed to be pivoted on the lower shaft atH. It is provided at its lower end just above the pivotbearing with apivoted pawl, K,which is adapted to engage a ratchet, L, on the lower shaft to turn said shaft in the direction indicated by the arrow when the lever is pushed upward from the horizontal to the vertical position. This lever works through the arc of a quarter of a circle, and when it is depressed from the vertical the pawl K is disengaged from the ratchet L and moves backward on the same for a fresh purchase.
To the lever is pivoted the arm S, the outer end of which is bifurcated or branched, and provided with the lateral pivoted links V, which extend inward from the ends of the branches on opposite sides of the gear Cto the upper shaft or journal, B, on which saidlinks are also pivoted. The joint at" which the branches of the arm S are pivoted to thelinksV V also provides a pivot-bearing for the reversi- 7i ble pawl Z, which is designed to engage the teeth of the gear-wheel C. When in direct working position, this pawlextends inward, so
that it acts in an opposite direction from the lever-pawl, serving, however,- to turn the upper wheel, C, inthe di'rectionindicatedby the arrow, which is the same direction in which l said wheel is turned by the action of the lower wheel when the latter is operated by the lower pawl, K. When the lever is depressed, the pawl-Z is in direct action, and when said lever is raised the pawl Z slides back on the gearwheel for a new engagement.
In order that the lever G can be raised to the perpendicular, it is formed with abend, 0L,`
whereby it is enabled to span the upper shaft or journal, B, which would otherwise form an obstruction.
end of the rise of the lever. The lever is also This bend forms the stop at the` provided with a lug-stop, b, designed to en" gage a shoulder or bearing, o, of the arm S when said lever has reached the horizontahin order to prevent further xncvement in this direction.
To the body of the arm S, and projecting outward or toward the elbowjoint d, is secured a flexible tongue, T, preferably made of rubber, which is designed to serve as a spring to cause the pawl Z to actpromptly and quickly,`
What I claim, and desire to securelbywLety ters Patent, isl l. The combination, with the shafts `B and E, the engaging wheels, and the ratchet on lever-shaft, of the main lever pivoted on the lower shaft and the stop bent at a to span the npper shaft, the lower pawl, K, the arm S, its links V, and the upper pawl, Z, pi voted at the lelbow-joint, substantially as specied.
ICO
2. The combination, with the shafts and their engaging gear-wheels, and the ratchet on the lever-shaft, of the lever G, having the lower pawl and provided with the elbow-arm, and links having at the joint an upper pawl, the stop-lug on the lever, and the stop shoulder or bearing on the arm, substantially as specied.
3. The combination, with the main lever having a pawl at its lower end, and the engag-` ing Wheels and ratchet, of the bifurcated arm, the links connected to the branches of this arm, and the pawl pivoted at the joint of said links and arm, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the upper shaft or ver and having links connected to the upper 2o shaft, the spring, and the upper pawl pivoted at the elbow-joint, substantially as specified. Y 5. The combination, with the upper shaft or journal, thelower shaft, and the engaging gearwheels mounted on these shafts, of the main 25 operating-lever pivoted on the lower shaft, and having a lower pawl operating a ratchet on said lower shaft, the arm pivoted to said lever, its links, and the pawl engaging the upper gear-wheel, and a steadying-brace eXtend- 3o ing from the upper shaft or journalV downward to a hearing` substantially as specified. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
