United States Patent 3,151,790 TACKLE BOX Gus H. Mavrakis, 135 Burlington Ave., Billings, Mont. Filed Aug. 6, 1962, Ser. No. 215,185 1 Claim. (Cl. 2'245) This invention relates to a tackle box and more particularly to such a box particularly adapted for the use of a fisherman and adapted to contain such material as lures, weights, plugs, swivels, bobbers, and any other small articles which are normally employed by a fisherman.
A primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is supported on the front of the person of the wearer by means of shoulder straps so that the same may be located in a position of ready accessability and at the same time leaving both hands free for other purposes.
An additional object of the invention is the provision of such a tackle box which may be readily closed while in worn position, and maintained in closed relation, until such time as it is desired to extract material therefrom, at which time it may be readily and expeditiously opened.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be worn on the person of the user in a readily accessible position, that is, in front and approximately the height of the waist, so that access may be had thereto with a minimum of effort and difliculty.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of such a device which may be provided with compartments of any desired size or shape in order to most advantageously contain the particular article which is adapted to be positioned therein.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efiicient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.
Still other objects reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of the tackle box of the instant invention shown in closed position.
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view of the box of the instant invention disclosed in open position; and
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the device in partially open position, the straps being removed for the sake of clarity of illustration.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having reference now to the drawing in detail, the tackle box of the instant invention is generally indicated at and comprises a receptacle 11, having side walls 12, a front wall 13, a rear wall 14, and a bottom wall 15. Interiorly of receptacle 16 there is positioned a multiple compartment partitioning element 16, which may be formed either as a unit with interlocking partitions in a conventional manner, or which may be comprised of individual partition elements. The partition unit 16 may either be fixed to the side walls 12 and the bottom wall 15, or alternatively, may be removable in part or in toto as desired.
The opposite side walls 12 of compartment 11 are provided adjacent rear wall 14 with centrally disposed ice pivot pin 17, and immediately thereabove with stop pins 18. Pins 17 and 18 extend through flanges 19 of a support member generally indicated at 20, which also includes a rear wall portion 21 having an upwardly extending extremity 22 which is provided with openings 23. The openings 23 are adapted for the reception of fasteners or buckles 24 carried by a pair of cross straps 25 which are adapted to engage over the shoulders and beneath the arms of the user, and which in turn are secured in brackets or fastenings 26 at the lower portion of flanges 19 adjacent the pivot pin 17. The arrangement is thus such that receptacle 11 may rotate about pivot 17, until its forward or normally open face rests against the back 21, portion 21 in turn being supported by the straps 25. In order to limit the movement of receptacle 12 to a horizontal position, the stop pins 18 extend through arcuate slots 27 in flanges or side walls 19, so that at its uppermost point of travel receptacle 11 lies flush against plate or back 21, while at its opposite limit it extends horizontally from the body of the user.
In order to prevent the disengagement of tackle such as lures and the like from the several compartments and partition element 16, a supplemental closure member 30 is provided which is hinged as by hinges 31 to front wall 13, and which when extended outwardly as best shown in FIGURE 2, serves as a supplemental shelf upon which tackle may be deposited during sorting or selection.
Latch means are provided for securing the box in closed position and includes first and second latch members which take the form of a permanent magnet 32 positioned on upper flange 22 and attracted to a second magnet 33 which is carried by front wall 13, the magnetic attraction being suificient to hold the parts in closed relation, but not sufiicient to preclude relatively easy opening of the tackle box when such opening is desired. The second magnet 33 has an upper surface which defines a means limiting the pivotal travel of the auxiliary lid or supplemental closure member 30 to a plane perpendicular to the rear wall portion 21 of the support member 26 parallel to the plane of the receptacle 11 and extending outwardly from the top thereof as seen particularly in FIGURE 2.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided a tackle box which accomplishes all the objects of this invention and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
A tackle box comprised of a receptacle having front, rear, side and bottom walls, means dividing said receptacle into a plurality of compartments, a support member including a rear wall and side flanges, means pivoting said side walls of said receptacle to said flanges adjacent the lower end thereof, strap means for securing said support member to the body of a user at a point adjacent the front of the users waist, stop means limiting the pivotal travel of said receptacle to a substantially perpendicular plane with respect to said rear wall of said support member when moved away from said rear wall, and an auxiliary lid for said receptacle, means pivoting said auxiliary lid to said front wall of said receptacle,
and means limiting the pivotal travel of said auxiliary lid to a plane parallel to said perpendicular plane and extending outwardly from the top of said receptacle to function as a supplemental shelf When the user is standing upright, latch means being provided for securing said receptacle in closed position against said rear Wall of said support member, said latch means including a latch member secured to said front wall of said receptacle and defining said means limiting the pivotal travel of said auxiliary lid.
