DONALD M. LAWRENCE W lw atuev United States Patent "ice 3,151,567 KELLER VANE PUMP Donald M. Lawrence, New Hartford, NIL, assignor to The endix ilorporation, a corporation of Belawar Filed Feb. 2, 1962, Ser. No. 17%),551 5 Claims. (Cl. ltl3118) This invention relates to pumps and more particularly concerns a rotary pump in which rotor means traverses a profiled stator.
In prior constructions of roller-vane pumps (such as disclosed in the US. Patent #2,378,390, issued to Bertea), it was necessary to radially align the stator openings with the inlet and outlet in other structure. The provision of passages to and from its two pump chambers involved multi-part structure having several connecting passages and sealing means for mating openings.
An object of the present invention is to provide a rotary pump construction in which the disadvantage of radial alignment between stator openings and the inlet and outlet means of adjacent structure is avoided.
A further object is the provision of an improved rotmy pump construction in which the flow is from an annular inlet chamber at one side of a stator through the pressurizing means to an annular outlet chamber at the other side of the stator.
A further object is to provide such a pump construction which is especially compact and easy to assemble due to the arrmigement of few parts providing the inlet and outlet chambers.
Another object is to provide an improved roller-vane pump with a double profiled stator having a simplified, non-aligned construction which gives annular inlet and outlet chambers at each side of the stator, rather than connecting passages, and has a simple seal in the periphery of the rotor to prevent leakage from the outlet chamber to the inlet chamber.
The realization of the above objects along with the feafares and advantages of the invention will be apparent by reference to the accompanying drawing in winch:
FIGURE 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of a double-profiled, roller-vane pump embodying the invention and shows the upper half of the stator rotated ninety degrees in order to illustrate an outlet from a pump chamber so that flow from an annular inlet chamber to an annular outlet chamber is suggested, and
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged View of the discharge side of the pump stator and rotor and shows two crescent-shaped chambers, rollers urged out from grooves in the rotor to contact the profiled surfaces of the pump chambers and an inlet and an outlet in radial planes to each chamber.
Referring to the drawings, 11 indicates an electric motor connected by shaft 13 to the rotor 15 surrounded by stator 17 mounted in housing bore 19. Shaft 13 has a transverse slot 21 receiving a connecting pin 23, the ends of which are received in holes in rotor 15. Housing 27 has a threaded inlet 39 connected to the middle part of the bore 19 and a threaded outlet 39 connected through the bottom or closed end of the bore 19.
In the open end of bore 19, adjacent motor 11, a cuplilre member 31 is mounted. The cup-like member 31 has a reduced-diameter axial projection 33 at the right which provides with housing bore 19 an annular inlet chamber 35 at the location of housing inlet 29. The axial projection 33 also has an axial bore 37 for receiving and supporting shaft 13. The annular transverse face of projection 33 abuts the inlet face of stator 1'7 at the inne part thereof for sealing and faces inlet side of the annular rotor 15. Cup-like member Bl has an annular side wall 39 contacting bore 19 at the open end and has inwardly of wall 39 a seal recess 4i. Wall 39 has seal rings 43 3,151,557 Fatentecl Get. 6, 1954 which prevent leakage toward the motor 11 along wall 59. Seal ecess it has two seal rings 45 which prevent leakage along shaft 33. The parts within bore 19 are held therein and urged toward the bottom by means of annular plate 47 which is urged to the right by screws 49 threaded into the transverse part of the housing 27 surrounding the open end of bore 19.
Housing 27 is also provided with a by-pass 51 extending from outlet 3% to inlet 29. By-pass 51 is normally closed by the adjustable sp lug-biased vflve 53 to prevent return of liquid unless a predetermined pressure is exceeded.
The annular stator 17 has both its circular inlet edge 61 and its circular outlet edge 63 beveled. An inlet passage 6:; extends from the bottom part of inlet edge 61 axially to the middle or the mid-point section of the inner surface of stator 17 to provide communication of a pump chamber with the annular inlet chamber 35. At the right of stator 17, a seal plate or disc 57 is positioned and this disc has a recessed corner facing the stator 1'7 to provide an annular discharge chamber 71. Seal 72 in the stator periphery prevents leakage between the inlet and outlet chambers. An outlet passage 73 which is also axially-inclined extends from the axial center part or midpoint section of the inner surface of stator 17 to the beveled outlet edge 63 for discharge from a pump chamher. As mentioned, it is to be realized that the stator havoutlet passage 73 is actually rotated ninety degrees in order to suggest the dew path through the pump. As will appear, another inlet actually is opposite the inlet which is shown. Alignment disc 67 has a fiat transverse surface which abuts the outlet face of the stator 17, inwardly of outlet passage 73 for sealing, and which faces the right or outlet side of the rotor 15. Disc 67 is also provided t ith a plurality flats '75 in its peripaeral surface so that discharged liquid can flow from the discharged chamber '71- to the outlet chamber 77 formed by outlet recess 79 in disc 67 and the bottom surfaces of bore 19. From outlet chamber 7'7, the liquid leaves the pump through outlet 3% connected to the closed end of bore 19. The bottom of bore 19 has an axially-projecting boss 81 which abuts and spaces plate 67.
In FlGURE 2 which suggests the operation the lmown double-profiled roller-vane pump as viewed from the discharge side, it can be seen that the inlet passages as and outlet passages '73 are opposite each other or on common diameters, a half-circle apart. Rotor 15 has six channels or grooves 8? which loosely receive siX rollers 88. As is well-known, the rollers 83 will be urged outwardly as shown by centrifugal action and will act as vanes against inner elliptical surface of the stator 17. From FIGURE 2, it can be realized that the inlet passages are centered in a radial plane and extend from the inlet edge of the stator 17 to the inlet ends of the crescent-shaped pump chambers 3% and that the outlet passages 7'3 are centered in a radial plane which is perpendicular to the plane of the inlet passages 55 and extend outwardly from the outlet ends of the crescent-shaped pump chambers 8? to the outlet edge 63 of the stator 17.
in the operation of the invention, rotation of the motor drive shaft 13 operates to drive the rotor 15. Rotation of the rotor will cause the rollers 38 to advance therewith and the rollers 88 under the urge of centrifugal force will be caused to move outwardly in the channels 87 so as to bear against and traverse the stator profile in sliding and rolling contact therewith. The rollers having slightly less diameter than the width of the grooves will shift laterally therein according to the direction of forces imposed thereon, as described in detail in above-noted patout. An effective seal is provided between the openings of intake and outlet passages 65 and 73 when the rollers 83 traverse the sealing contours since the rollers will be held in close contact with such contours under the urge of centrifugal force and will be held in intimate contact with the leading sides of their channel 87 While traversing the sealing contours under the urge of fluid pressure;
As the rollers traverse the stator profile, they will act as vanes in efiecting inflow of liquid from the annular inlet chamber 35 through the irdetpassages 65 and its discharge through the outlet passages '73 to the annular outlet chamber 71. By this action, liquid supplied to 7 housing inlet 29 will be pressurized and delivered past sealing disc 67 to housing outlet Zll. O-ring seal '72 prevents leakage along the stator periphery.
It is to be noted that, sincethecylindrical projection 33 of cup-like member 31 provides the annular inlet vide a compactpump with provision for face seals at the stator ends and for ring seals at other required locations. It is to be understood that persons skilled in the art can make changes in the disclosed embodiment of the invention without departing from the invention set forth in the following claims.
