UNITED STATES PATENT in-FICE..
BARMER R. CROSS, OF LOVELL, INDIANA.
ClDER-PRESS.
SPECIFICATIONforming part ox' Letters Patent No. 315,010, dated Apr17, 1885.
Application filed November 25, 1834.
Figure l is a side view of my improved ci- I der-press. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the saine. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal transverse sertional view taken on the line m x in Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a top view showing the pressbox open for the removal of the pomace.
The same letters refer to the saine parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to presses for manufacturing cider, and for pressingfrnit, cheese,
" and the like; and it has for its object to providea combined pressing and straining box which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
Vith these ends in view the invention consists `in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the body of my improved press, which consists of a cylindrical tub or vessel constructed of thick narrow staves B B, which are tapering in cross section, as shown. The staves are set short distances apart, and are connected at the top and bottoni, and, if desired, at suitable intervals, by spacing-blocks C C.
The tub or vessel A is constructed in two vertical sections, D and E,which are connected at their rear edges by hinge-joints F, formed by the metallic bands G, which are hinged upon the vertical rod H. The front edges of the sections D and E are connected by hasps I I, the ends of which are provided with slots J, f1tting over staples K, and secured' by a rod, L, passing vertically through the said staples.
The inner sides of the sections D and E of the tub or vessel are lined with perforated sheet metal or wire netting M, forming a strain- (No model.)
er for the j uice expressed by the follower, to be hereinafter described. The said straining material is secured on the inner side by means of vertical strips N N to the staves B, composing the tub or vessel. By this construction great additional strength is gained without detracting from the straining qualities of the device.
O is a follower constructed of heavy planking, and adapted to be operated in any suitable manner by an ordinary screw-press or other suitable means.
The operation of this invention and its advantages will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The material to be pressed having been placed inthe tub or vessel, the follower is inserted and pressure applied, thus expressing and straining the liquid. Vhen the operation of pressing has been completed, the vessel or tub may be opened and the pomace or solid parts or residue thus be readily removed.
The construction is simple and inexpensive, and the device is effective in use and easily operated.
It is obvious that this invention is susceptible to a variety of changes with regard to the construction of minor details, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein described, but reserve to myself the right to all such modifications as may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a fruit or other press, a tub or pressbox constructed of suitably-connected staves, with an interior straining-lining of perforated metal or wire netting, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a fruit or other press, a tub or pressbox. constructed of suitably-connected staves with intermediate spaces, and having a metallic straiping-lining, said box or tub being constructed in two sections hinged together, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
3. In a fruit or other press, a tub or pressbox constructed of suitably-spaced staves in two sections, connected by the hinged bands ICO means of the bands, which also serve to conneet the staves, in combination with the metallio straining-lining, the interior re-enforcing strips, and the follower, substantially as and for vthe purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
