INSTANTANEO US SHUTTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC LENSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 313,677, dated March 10, 1885.
Application filed December .2, l884. (No model Id the drawings the lens-tube B is repre- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST LOEFFLER, of Tompkinsville, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Instan'taneous Shutters for Photograph-Lenses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of one of my improved shutters, part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the line a: a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3-is a sectional plan view of the same, taken through the line y 1, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the upper and'middle part of the same.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience in instantaneous photographing, and provide a mechanism simple in construction and reliable in operation "for instantly uncovering and covering the lenses, so as to obtain an instantaneous exposure.
The invention relates to an instantaneous shutter for'photograph-lenses, constructed with a plate, having opening to receive the lenstube, a spring-roller, and a plain roller con nected with the said plate and provided with a connecting-cloth having central opening, and a handle, ratchet-wheel, and spring-lever pawl, whereby the said rollers can be readily turned and released. The handle is provided 5 with a pin to engage with a latch pivoted to the plate, and limited in its movement by a stoppin, whereby the said handle will be antomatically caught and held against the draft of the spring-roller. The apertured plate is provided with keepers to receive the edge of a plate, having a larger or smaller opening than the main plate and kept in place by a sented as being smaller than the aperture in the plate 0. In this case a board or plate, D
having an aperture of the proper size to re-- 1 .to different sizes of lens-tubes.
To the side edges of the plate 0 are attached bars G, the ends of which project at the upper and lower corners of the said plate, and are perforated to receive the journals of the rollers H I. The lower roller, H, is a springroller, and the upper roller, I, is a plain roller.
J is a strip of black cloth or other suitable flexible material, of a width a little less than the breadth of the plate 0 and of a length.
about equal to three times the length of the said plate 0. The ends of the flexible material J are wound upon and attached to the rollers H I, and in the center of the said strip is formed a square aperture, a little less in size thanthe plate 0.
To the forward side of the side edges of the plate 0 are attached bars or plates K, the under sides of the inner edges of which are rabbeted to receive the side edges of the flexible material, so that the said plates K will serve as guides to keep the said flexible material close to the plate 0 as it is being wound from one to the other of the rollers H I.
To one of the journals of the upper or plain roller, I, is attached a crank, L, or other-suitable handle for turning the roller I to wind the flexible material J upon it, the unwinding of the said material from the spring-roller II coiling up the spring of the said roller H and putting it under tension.
To the inner side of the handle L is attached a pin, M, which, as the said handle revolves, strikes, raises, and passes a catch, N, pivoted to the edge bar G, so as to hold the said haning in the plate 0, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and Y 2. The lens is thenfocused. The roller I is turned to wind up another third of the cloth '"J and bring the lower part of the said cloth over the opening in the plate 0. v The sensitive plate is then. inserted, and at the proper time the pawl P is operated to raise its engaging end away from the ratchet-wheel Q,

into which it may be turned. The catch N is p I] is slotted, and in the space thus formed is placed a lever-pawl, P, the forward end of s which engages with a ratchet-wheel, Q, rig- .idly attached tot-he journal of the upper roller, I. The outer end of the lever-pawl P is held up, holding its engaging end in .gear with the said ratchet-wheel Q by a spiral or other spring, R, interposed between and seis placed upon the lens-tube B, and the upper 'roller, I, is turned by turning'the handle L until about a third of the cloth J is wound cloth J to pass the opening in the plate 0 can less tension to the spring of the roller H.

2. In an instantaneous shutter for photograph-lenses, the combination, with the plate 0, having aperture, the spring ller H, the plain roller I, and the (310th :ig central aperture, of the handle L, "let-wheel Q, and. the spring lever-pm P R, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said rollers can be readily turned and released, as set forth.
3. In an instantaneous shutter for photograph-lenses, the combination, with the plate 0, having aperture, the spring-roller H, the plain rollerI, the cloth J,having opening, and the handle, ratchet-wheel, and spring leverpawl L Q, PR, of the pin M, the pivoted latch N, and the stop-pin O, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said handle will be automatically caught and held against the draft of the springroller, as set forth.
