CLOTH-GUIDE FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,633, dated March 10, 1885.

To all whom ii may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS J. SULLI- VAN, of Fall River, Bristol county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cloth Guides for Looms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myimprovement consists of guides attached to the breast-beam of a loom and arranged in connection with a cloth-roller to guide the cloth onto the cloth-roller, so as to roll straight and true thereon and prevent the shocks and jars of the loom from causing the cloth to run to one end of the roller, which frequently occurs to such extent that the selvage turns in between the side of the rollerstand and the end of the sand-roller, where it gets smeared with black oil from the journal-bearing, and
i also gets out and torn and otherwise damaged,
all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification, in which similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective-view of the clothroll end of a loom-frame, showing the application of my improved guides. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the loom-frame on the line 00 a", Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an attaching plate or bracket which I use for connecting my cloth guides to the breast-beam. By the same bolts, a, that secure the templeplates 12 to the breast-beam c, I propose to se cure the angle plates or brackets d to the under side of the breast-beam for the support of the cloth-guides e,which I propose to employ for guiding the edges of the cloth directly and straightly on to the eloth-rollf, for preventing the cloth from running against the side frames, g, where it is often caused to run on one side (No modal) or the other by the shocks andjars of the loom, and sometimes get torn, and often smeared with oil from thejournals of the sandroll K, thereby making imperfect rolls. The said guides consist of narrow plates of metahwhich are pivoted to said brackets at h, and have each a slot, 17, extending upward from the other end. through which the cloth-ro1l fextends, and along up which said roll rises as the cloth accumulates, the guides or gages being capable of shifting on the pivots h as the cloth-rollchanges its position by the winding of the cloth on it, and thus being always in theproper relations with the cloth for guiding it on the roll and protecting the edges from injury, as above stated. The brackets d have each a slot,j, for the bolts 0. to enable them to be shifted to suit the width of the cloth.
WVhile I prefer to utilize the same bolts a for connecting both the temple-plates b and these brackets, because of the simplicity of the arrangement, I may of course employ separate bolts for them, if desired.
Having thus described my in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the guides 12, having slots ilor the cloth-roll,with the cloth-roll, the brackets (l, to which the guides are pivoted, and the breast-beam of a loom, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the breast-beam 0 and the cloth-roll f, of the brackets (1, adjustably attached to the breast-beam, and the guides e, pivoted to said brackets to shift with the cloth-roll, and having slots embracing said cloth-roll, substantially as described.
