(Cl. 133-5) The present invention relates to a portable apparatus for holding and handling, and delivering, coins such as used by bus conductors and under like circumstances.
There are known apparatuses of this kind which are adapted to deliver, according to choice, one or more coins at a time. However, it is a disadvantage of the said apparatus that for the delivery of a different number of coins a different key has to be actuated. This puts additional strain on the conductor (or other person using the apparatus) since he has to choose one of several keys in order to obtain the desired number of coins.
It is the object of the present invention to eliminate this disadvantage as far as possible, permitting an operator to use the same key, no matter what number of coins is to be withdrawn from the apparatus, the operator having to actuate certain elements which perform a preselection of working parts of the apparatus, resulting in the dispensing of the desired number of coins.
It is, in a more general sense, the object of the invention to provide an inexpensive, yet reliable apparatus for delivering coins. 7
Accordingly, there is provided an apparatus for the delivery of coins which comprises a stack of several superposed apertured relatively slidable shutters, the lowermost shutter being connected to a springbiased lever, the top shutter and every intermediate shutter having carrying means for temporarily connecting one or more of these upper shutters with the said lowermost one for common movement, whenever the said lever and thereby the lowermost shutter is actuated against the urge of the said spring.
The invention will now be described with reference to the annexed drawing showing the new apparatus,

The new apparatus comprises a tubular container 1 and a frame which is provided with a bottom part 2 constituted by a rectangular flat box open at the front and having a circular hole 3 in its top, and a semi-circular cut-out 3 in its bottom wall, the open side of which cutout is directed to the front edge of part 2; hole 3 and cut-out 3 are staggered against each other. The said bottom is provided with two parallel rails 3 on which can slide the lowermost shutter 4. Hole 3 through which a coin can drop out is of the same diameter as the inner diameter of the tubular container 1 and the semi-circular cut-out 3'. In the lowermost shutter, or false bottom 4, near its forward edge, are provided two vertical pins 6, 7 the purpose of which will be described later. The false bottom 4 has a central circular hole 5 of the same diameter as hole 3, and can be slid to and fro by a driving means as for example a pair of levers 8 pivotally attached at 9 to a downwardly bent flange 10 at the top end of container 1. A spring 11 urges the two levers 8 into a rearward position. To the two levers 8 are applied at 12 two small bosses 13 provided at the bend of two knee levers 14 pivoted at 15 to the bottom part 2. The two levers 14 are connected at the front side of container 1 by a cross-plate 16 which serves as a key. De-
pressing the plate 16 results in a pressure of bosses 13 against the edge of levers 8 which swing about their frustum 9, against the urge of spring 11 so that the free end of these levers moves in the direction of the arrow a. The ends of levers 8 engage in small cut-outs 17 in the false bottom 4. It will thus be evident that the digital operation of plate 16, that is the digital depression of plate 16 and then its release, will cause a reciprocating motion in the false bottom 4.
Superposed onfalse bottom 4 are the other shutters shown in FIGURE 5. The shutter 18 which has a hole 5 equal to hole 5 of bottom 4 lies on top of false bottom 4 and on shutter 18 lies the shutter 19. Above shutter 19 is provided the top plate 20 of part 2 which plate is affixed to the lower edge of the tubular container 1. The plate 20, as well as shutter 19 have holes 3, 5 respectively. The two shutters 18, 19 are held between the false bottom 4 and the plate 20. The false bottom 4 in turn is guided, and slides on rails 3".
T o the forward edge of shutter 18 is affixed, for selective rapid swinging movement about a horizontal pin 21, said movement being substantially to each side of a vertical position, a short arm 22. In the same way the shutter 19 carries an arm 23 swinging about a pin 24. Arm 22 can be rapidly swung inwardly so as to be out of the path of the pin 7 on the false bottom 4. Swung out it lies in the path of pin 7. In the same way the arm 23 can be brought into rapid connection with the pin 6 or out of such connection. In order to accommodate the arm 23 in its idle position and hold it, the plate 20 has a forwardly extending nose 25 with a lateral cut-out 26 into which arm 23 can enter. In the same way the shutter 19 has a nose 27 with a cut-out into which the arm 22 can be swung in its idle position. It is seen from the drawings that the short arms 22, 23 are located in a frontal position, closest to the operator, so that to the reach of the reach of the finger of said operator, they are exposed, unobstructed, and, therefore, readily accessible.
It will be seen that with every depression of plate 16 the false bottom 4 will move forward and a coin from a stack in container 1 having passed through the holes 5 of plate 20 and shutters 18 and 19 and lying within the hole 5 of the false bottom 4 and on top of its lower wall will be carried by the said false bottom until the rear edge of the coin coincides with the rear edge of the cutout 3 in said lower wall 2, to fall out. Now if the arm 23 of the shutter 19 is swung out to lie in the path of pin 6 a pressure on plate 16 will result in the forward movement of the false bottom 4 and due to the engagement of arm 23 with pin 6 the shutter 19 will be shifted forward taking along the shutter 18 as well. Thus three superposed coins, namely those in the superposed holes 5 of the false bottom 4 and of shutters 18 and 19 will be moved forward to fall out through cut-out 3'. If the arm 23 is brought out of engagement with pin 6 and arm 22 is swung into engagement with pin 7 the false bottom 4 in its movement will take along the shutter 18 only, resulting in delivering two coins, namely those in the false bottom and in shutter 18.
It will be seen that the new device is very convenient in use. The operator presses down the bar or key 16 at the front of the device, this being done with the thumb and holds at the same time the hand below the opening in the bottom part, so that the coins fall into the hand.
In the above example three superposed shutters are shown. But it would be within the scope of the invention to provide the device with two shutters only, or with more than three shutters. A number of devices as shown may be united to form a battery, each device having a tube of different diameter, so as to accommodate coins of different size.
What I claim is;
1. In a portable device for holding, handling and delivering coins, a tubular container, a stack comprising several superposed apertured relatively slidable shutters, a frame mounting the container and supporting the stack of shutters beneath the container, digitally operable reciprocating driving means permanently attached to the bottom shutter, digitally operable means carried by and rapidly connecting the top shutter selectively to the bottom shutter or to the frame, and digitally operable means carried by and rapidly connecting every intermediate shutter selectively to the shutter immediately above it or to the bottom shutter. v
2. A device as set forth in claim 1, wherein each rapidly connecting means constitutes a different frontally located unobstructed exposed element carried by a shutter and readily accessible to the finger of an operator.
3. In a portable device for holding, handling and delivering coins, a tubular container, a stack comprising three superposed apertured relatively slidable shutters, a frame mounting the container and supporting the stack of shutters beneath the container, digitally operable reciprocating driving means permanently attached to the bottom shutter, digitally operable means carried by and rapidly connecting the top shutter selectively to the bottom shutter or to the frame, and digitally operable means carried by and rapidly connecting the intermediate shutter selectively to the top shutter or to the bottom shutter.

In a portable device for holding, handling and delivering coins, a tubular container, a stack comprising three superposed apertured relatively slidable shutters, a frame mounting the container and supporting the stack of shutters beneath the container, digitally operable reciprocating driving means permanently attached to the 4 bottom shutter, frontally located unobstructed exposed element means carried by a shutter and readily accessible to the finger of an operator, said element means being pivotally mounted on one end for rotation through an are substantially 90 on each side of a vertical position and rapidly connecting the top shutter selectively to the bot tom shutter when swung to one side or to the frame When swung to the other side, and further frontally located unobstructed exposed element means carried by a shutter and readily accessible to the finger of an operator, said further element means being pivotally mounted on one end for rotation through an are substantially 90 7 on each side of a vertical position and rapidly connecting the intermediate shutter selectively to the top shutter when swung to one side or to the bottom shutter when swung to the other side.
5. In a portable device for holding, handling and delivering coins, a tubular container, two superposed apertured relatively slidable shutters, a frame mounting the container and supporting the shutters beneath the container, digitally operable reciprocating driving means permanently attached to the bottom shutter, an unobstructed exposed element means carried by a shutter and mounted in a frontal location and thereby readily accessible to the finger of an operator, said element means being manually movable by a finger of an operator rapidly and selectively between a position connecting the top shutter to the bottom shutter and a position disengaging said shutters.

IN A PORTABLE DEVICE FOR HOLDING, HANDLING AND DELIVERING COINS, A TUBULAR CONTAINER, A STACK COMPRISING SEVERAL SUPERPOSED APERTURED RELATIVELY SLIDABLE SHUTTERS, A FRAME MOUNTING THE CONTAINER AND SUPPORTING THE STACK OF SHUTTERS BENEATH THE CONTAINER, DIGITALLY OPERABLE RECIPROCATING DRIVING MEANS PERMANENTLY ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM SHUTTER, DIGITALLY OPERABLE MEANS CARRIED BY AND RAPIDLY CONNECTING THE TOP SHUTTER SELECTIVELY TO THE BOTTOM SHUTTER OR TO THE FRAME, AND DIGITALLY OPERABLE MEANS CARRIED BY AND RAPIDLY CONNECTING EVERY INTERMEDIATE SHUTTER SELECTIVELY TO THE SHUTTER IMMEDIATELY ABOVE IT OR TO THE BOTTOM SHUTTER.
