Description

y 1954 N. FRANKLIN 3,131,915
MINING CUTTER Filed Aug. 31, 1962 INVENTOR. Aur//Q/1. /%%//w United States Patent Ofi ice 3,131,915 MINING CUTTER Luther N. Franklin, 671 S. Madison, Madisonville, Ky. Filed Aug. 31, 1962, Ser. No. 220,603 2 Claims. (Cl. 26233) The present invention relates to mining cutters generally and specifically to an improvement to the device described in my prior United States Patent No. 3,020,031, issued February 6, 1962.
An object of the present invention is to provide a mining cutter including a bit locking mechanism for locking the cutter bit in its proper position in a support member, the mechanism including a resilient member taking up the slack of movement of the locking mechanism.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a mining cutter having a locking mechanism including a pin having an over center action, the over center action including a resilient bar fabricated or rubber or the like, which bar takes up the slack of the over center action and provides resiliency necessary for holding the bit in the support member.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawing, and with reference to the aforesaid patent. In the drawing of this application,
FIGURE 1 is a view partially in section of the mining cutter according to the present invention,
FIGURE 2 is a view taken on the line 2-2 of FIG- URE 1,
FIGURE 3 is a view taken on the line 33 of FIG- URE 1,
FIGURE 4 is an exploded isometric view showing the improved keeper and related parts,
FIGURE 5 is an elevational view of the keeper, seen from one side,
FIGURE 6 is an elevational view of the keeper seen from the other side, and
FIGURE 7 is a view taken on the line 7-7 of FIG- URE 6.
Referring to the drawing in detail in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 20 designates generally a chain link for attachment to other links in a cutting chain, the link 20 having apertures 24 and 26 for receiving the pins which connect the link 20 to other links in the cutting chain.
A support member 27 rises from the upper surface of the upright link 20 and it includes a sloping recess 28 which receives therein the bit 29 conformably shaped to fit the recess 28 which is rectangular in cross-sectional configuration.
The support member 27 includes a shoulder 36 with a slot 37 separating the shoulder 36 from the balance of the support member 27.
A stop member 34 extends transversely through the support member 27 and the bit 29 has an end portion bearing against the stop member 34.
The shoulder 36 is provided with a circular opening 41 in which is rotatably mounted a locking member 42. The locking member 42 includes a cylindrical section 43 of a size to fit snugly within the opening 41. Also on the locking member 42 is a cylindrical projection 44.
A portion of the periphery of the cylindrical section 43 is provided with a recess 46 and the shoulder 36 is provided with a transverse opening for a pin 47 which is received in the recess 46 and locks the locking member 42 against endwise movement in the opening 41 but permits rotary movement.
All of the above components are to be found in my prior patent, above mentioned, and the present invention concerns an improvement to the prior patent in the provi- Patented May 7 5, 1964 sion of a keeper 6! having a transversely arranged recess 62 extending from one side edge of the keeper 60 to the other side edge. A block element 64 is slidable in the recess and has one end 66 spaced from the adjacent wall of the recess 62.
The end 66 of the element 64 is arcuately curved and the wall 68 is also arcuately curved to define therebetween a cylindrical chamber 70 in which is seated a cylindrical resilient bar member 72.
The element 64 is also provided with a slot 74 which slidably receives the projection 44 and which controls the upward and downward movement of the keeper 60 into and out of engagement with the cutting bit 29 when the locking member 42 is rotated.
The locking member 42 has an end portion 54 conformably shaped to fit a tool applied thereto for effecting a rotary movement of the locking member 42.
The upper end of the keeper 60 is provided with a sloping surface 76 which bears against the cutting bit 29 and serves to keep the cutting bit 29 within the recess 28.
In use, when the cutting bit 29 is to be replaced, it is merely a matter of seconds to rotate the locking member 42 to the position in which the keeper 60 is withdrawn from engagement with the cutting bit 29. After the cutting bit 29 has been replaced or turned end for end, rotation of the locking member 42 will again move the keeper 60 to the position in which its sloping face 76 engages the bit 29. The provision of the two part keeper is believed to be novel and the provision of the resilient bar member 72 between the block element 64 and the adjacent end of the keeper recess 62 serves to take up the slack of movement between the locking element 42 and the keeper 60 and permits rotation of the locking member 42 to a position in which the bit 29 is securely held by the keeper 60.
While oniy a preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown and described, other embodiments are contemplated and numerous changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a mining cutter, an upright body portion, a support member secured to the upper surface of the body portion, said support member being provided with a slanting recess, a cutter bit having a portion thereof snugly seated in said recess, a stop member mounted in said support member and engaging a lower end portion of the cutter bit, said support member further including a shoulder having a slot therein, the improvement consisting of a keeper slidably mounted in said slot, said keeper including an inclined upper surface for engaging a portion of said bit, said keeper having a transversely arranged recess extending from one side edge thereof to the other side edge, a block element slidable in said recess and having one end spaced from the adjacent wall of said recess, said element having a trans-.
verse groove in one face, said shoulder being provided with a circular opening, a locking member including a cylindrical section rotatably arranged in said opening, a cylindrical offset projection on one end of the locking member engaging the groove in said block element, and a resilient bar member disposed in the space between said one end of said block element and said wall of said recess.
2. In a mining cutter, an upright body portion, a support member secured to the upper surface of the body portion, said support member being provided with a slanting recess, a cutter bit having a portion thereof snugly seated in said recess, a stop member mounted in said support member and engaging a lower end portion of the cutter bit, said support member further including a shoulder having a slot therein, the improvement conopening, a locking member including a cylindrical section rotatably arranged in said opening, a cylindrical 10 3,020,031
ofiset projection on one end of the locking member engaging the groove in said block element, a resilient bar member disposed in the space between said one end of said block element and said Wall of said recess, and a tool engaging end portion on the other end of said locking member. 7
