This invention relates to a display holder formed from foamed polystyrene, and more particularly to a display holder of the character described which effectively secures fragile articles, such as glass jars, flasks or bottles, during transit and when such articles are displayed for sale.
It is an object of the invention to provide a foamed polystyrene display holder in which fragile glass articles can be effectively packaged and shipped, and which can thereafter be arranged in upright position so as to readily display the contents thereof.
Another object of the invention invention is to provide a display holder which can be readily constructed with a minimum amount of fastening or additional assembly operations.
The above objects together with additional objects of the invention are accomplished by the combination and arrangement of parts more fully described in the following specification and accompanying drawing in which:

Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 is formed from an integral blank of foamed polystyrene and comprises a back-wall member 10 which is scored or creased along vertical score lines and 15' and horizontal score lines 22 and 22' to provide, respectively, leftand right-hand side- wall flap extensions 16 and 17, and top and bottom end- wall flap extensions 23 and 24. Each flap extension 16, 17, 23 and 24 is thus hingedly connected to back-wall member 10 and may be bent inwardly relative to the back-wall member along the score lines for insertion or assembly within a suitable carton.
As further illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, back-wall member 10 is provided with a recessed portion 11 adapted to effect a close frame-like fit to fragile articles placed therein for shipping purposes, as well as permitting an article to be placed in an upright position and held for maximum display. In the particular embodiment sho the recessed portion is adapted to receive a glass perfume commodity.
In order to effectively secure a fragile commodity placed in recessed portion 11, the bottom end-wall flap extension 24 is provided with one or more projections having convex surfaces 12. Thus, by bending each of the flap extensions inwardly and placing the display holder in a suitable carton or container, the convex surfaces 12 of flap 24 press yieldingly against the bottom surface 14 of recessed portion 11. The convex surfaces act as cushioning device to minimize the effect of vertical or lateral movement of the display holder during transit and further serve as a means whereby the holder is effectively braced and supported when displayed in an upright position.
In FIGS. 4, 5, 6 and 7 a modified embodiment of the display holder is illustrated wherein the top and bottom end- wall flap extensions 33 and 34 are provided respectively with elongated rectangular projections having convex surfaces 36 and 37. The double arrangement of convex surfaces as shown in FIG. 5, for example, provide for a greater support of the fragile article placed in recessed portion 31. In other respects, the construction of the display carton and function of convex surfaces is as previously described, with the exception that in these figures the recessed portion is adapted to receive a fragile medicinal bottle.
The foamed polystyrene utilized for purposes of the invention is a known material conventionally prepared from fine spherical beads, granules, or thin sheets of polystyrene containing distributed therein a suitable heatsenstive catalyst or other foaming agent which will cause expansion of the material when heated. The preferred polystyrene materials are spherical beads having a pentane blowing agent incorporated therein which are coated with nucleating agents consisting of sodium bicarbonate and citric acid.
The polystyrene display holder formed in accordance with the invention offers the advantage of being highly resistant to water absorption, fungus and insects. Moreover, by using convex polystyrene surfaces as described herein, the plastic material becomes compressed to onehalf or less of its thickness with its density consequently being doubled, thereby enhancing the impact resistance of the display holder.
While the display holder herein disclosed and described constitutes a preferred form of the invention, it is to be understood that the holder is capable of mechanical alteration without departing from the spirit of the invention and that such arrangement and commerical adaptation as fall within the scope of the claims are intended to be included herein.
Having thus fully set forth and described this invention what is claimed and desired to be obtained by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A display holder for holding a heavy article comprising a back-wall member having an article conforming recessed portion formed therein, said recessed portion containing an article in display position, a bottom flap and a top flap opposed to said bottom flap, both said top and bottom flaps being hingedly connected to said back wall member, a pair of opposed side flaps hingedly connected to said back wall member, at least one projection integral with the bottom flap and having a convex surface thereon, said bottom flap yieldingly presses the convex surface against the bottom surface of the recessed portion to support the weight of said article positioned therein when said flap is bent inwardly and upwardly surface integral therewith which yieldingly presses against the top of the recessed portion when said flap is bent inwardly towards the top surface of the recessed portion.

1. A DISPLAY HOLDER FOR HOLDING A HEAVY ARTICLE COMPRISING A BACK-WALL MEMBER HAVING AN ARTICLE CONFORMING RECESSED PORTION FORMED THEREIN, SAID RECESSED PORTION CONTAINING AN ARTICLE IN DISPLAY POSITION, A BOTTOM FLAP AND A TOP FLAP OPPOSED TO SAID BOTTOM FLAP, BOTH SAID TOP AND BOTTOM FLAPS BEING HINGEDLY CONNECTED TO SAID BACK WALL MEMBER, A PAIR OF OPPOSED SIDE FLAPS HINGEDLY CONNECTED TO SAID BACK WALL MEMBER, AT LEAST ONE PROJEC-
