To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN KELLY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Cocks and Air-Vents, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to an improved checkvalve and air-vent.

The object of the invention is to provide a check-valve which will automatically allow of the admission of water to boilers, 810., but prevent its escape unless desired, and which may also be used as a vent for the admission of air to boilers, 850., being so arranged as to prevent the escape of water therefrom.

To the accomplishment of the above the invent-ion consists of the novel devices and combination of devices, as will be described and claimed.

Reference will be made to the accompanyin g drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the device arranged to be used as a check-valve, and Fig. 2 a section on line 1 1 of Fig. 1.

Like letters refer to like parts in each View.

A casing consisting of parts A A, and provided with screwthreaded nozzles B B, is used, the parts A A being adapted to be screwed together, as shown. Upon its inner face section A is provided with a series of ribs, (1, and feet a, so arranged as to form a guide for ball valve 0, and to prevent the 010s ing of nozzle B thereby, while section A is provided with an ordinary valve'seat to allow of the closing of nozzle B by said ball-valveC.

When the device is to be used as a checkvalve, it is placed, as shown in Fig. 1, with section A uppermost, so that Water rising through the pipe will force valve 0 from its seat in section A and allow the water to pass through nozzle B to the boiler or tank situated at a convenient point above the casing, these part-s being so arranged as to prevent any back-flow.

When the device is to be used as an air-vent,

it is situated on the top of a tank or boiler,

with the section Auppermost. By this arrangement, when the tank is filled the valve will be forced to its seat in part A and prevent the escape of the water, but as the water is drawn from said tank the valve will fall by gravity upon the feet a, being guided by ribs to, and form a passage through which air is ad mitted to fill the spaceleft vacant bythewithdrawal of the water, and upon the tank being again filled the airis forced therefrom until the nozzle is closed by the valve coming to its seat.

\Vhen the device is used as a check-valve, and it is desired to allow of a back-flow, the

result may be accomplished in the followingmanner and by the following means, to wit: In the inner face of section A, and surroundthe valve-seat, is formed a groove, 1), in which a ring. D, rests. Ring D is formed with a projection, c, which passes into a chamber, d,cast with section A, and in which a shaft, 6, has bearing, said shaft being provided with a flaring collar,f, which completely closes the open ing through which it is passed. To the outer projecting end of shaft 6 there is secured a handle, 9. By operating handle g the shaft 6 is partly revolved, and through the connections described the ring D raised, the position of said ring being such that it will contact with valve 0 and raise it from its seat to allow of the escape of the water, the ribs a forming a passage for the flow of the water through nozzle B from any point thereabove.

What I claim is- The combination, with twopart casing A A, provided with ribs a and feet a, of ballvalve 0, ring D, and means for operating said ring, as and for the purpose set forth.
