THOMAS N. PERRINE,

? t it OF ANNA, ILLINOIS.
GOVERNOR FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
EPEC IPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,893, dated February at, 1885.
Application filed July 8, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS N. PERRINE, of Anna, in the county of Union and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Governors for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention pertains to improvements in enginegovernors, particularly of the centrifu gal type; and it consists of the combinations of parts and their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the governor, and Fig. 2 is a'partly-scctional elevation at right angles to Fig. 1.
a is an eccentric fast-011 the engineshaft b. c is a second eccentric around eccentric a, and fitted to turn freely thereon. The usual strap will be applied to the outer eccentric and a rod pass from the strap to the valve.
(2 is a circular disk fixed on shaft 1) contiguous to the eccentrics.
c c are curved arms or levers pivoted at one end to studsf, at one side of disk (1, and near its outer edge. These levers c are preferably each of half the length of the circle, so that in their inward position the free end of each abuts against the pivoted end of the other, so as to limit the inward movement, and to pre vent noise and concussion there are buffers g, of rubber, fitted in the fulcrum ends.
The levers c are fitted near their outer ends with adjustable weights h, and also with adjustable gibs i, to which are pivoted arms or links it, that pass to and are connected to the eccentric e.
Z l are springs connected to studs on disk d, and to adjustable gibs m on levers 6, so that they tend to draw the levers inward. It will be seen that these parts being all adjustable on the levers in relation to each other and the fulcrunis, the movement of the levers by the centrifugal force can be finely regulated.
(N0 model.)
In the rotation of disk d with the shaft the levers c tend to move outward by centrifugal action, and in that movement cause the outer eccentric or ring, 0, to turn more or less on the innereccentric. Theetfectis to shift the crowns of the eccentrics so that they approximate more nearly a concentric disk, thereby reduc ing the throw and lead of the valve. The parts can be set to insure this movement when the desired rate of speed is exceeded, so as to check the engine, and also a reverse move ment by action of the springs when the speed is too low. A pin'or stud, n, on eccentric a limits the movement of eccentric c by contact with a stud thereon.
Having thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a governor, the combination, with the two-part eccentric, of the segmental weighted levers, with the free end of one abutting against the pivoted end of the other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In agovernor, the combination, with the two-part eccentric, ofthe disk, and the weighted segmental levers, with their pivoted ends pro vided with buffers, and the free end of one lever abutting against the buffer of the other lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a governor, the combination, with the two-part eccentric, of the segmental weighted levers, constituting a complete circle in their inward position, and the arms eccentrically connected to eccentrics and said levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a governor, the combination, with the disk and the two-part eccentrics, of the segmental levers, with the pivoted end of one abutting against the free end of the other, springs connecting the levers to said disk, and arms connected eccentrically to said levers and eccentrics, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS N. PERRINE.
