WASHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,935, dated February 10, 1885. Application filed February 16, 1884. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, BENEDICT WING and JOEL WING. citizens of the United States, residing at Table Rock, in the county of Pawnee'and' State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful WashingMachine, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Our invention relates to washing-machines; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction and effective and durable in its operation.

With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wasl'iing-machine constructed in accordance with our invention, the upper portion or cover being thrown back toshow the working parts. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal 'vertical section of the same.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several figures, A represents the outer casing or box supported by suitable legs, a, secured toits sides and braced by cross rods or strips 1). The bottom of this box or casing A is preferably constructed of zinc or other suitable metal. This box or receptacle A consists of two parts or sections, the upper one of which is hinged to the lower and forms a cover for the same. In the sides of the lower portion or section are provided slots, in which bear the ends of a shaft, .0, projecting from the sides of an inner easing or box, D, which is adapted to contain the clothes. This box D, as shown in the drawings, is constructed octagonal in form, and is preferably of that form; but we wish to have it under-.

stood that we do not limit ourselves to a box constructed of octagonal form, as other forms may be used to an equal advantage. Upon sage of water to the inr er portion of said box, which is designed to contain the clothes to cleansed. The upper portion of this box D is hinged to the lower portion, to allow the clothes to be placed therein. The sides of said box are also provided with perforations or openings for the escape of water from said box. From the inner edges of each alternate strip E project strips F, which, when the easing or box is turned or revolved, serve to rub the clothes and clean the same by contact there with.

The operation is as follows: The clothes are placed within the box or casing D, the same being previously mounted in the sides of the outer box or casing, water is placed in said outer box, and the inner box revolved by means of a suitable handle attached to the shaft, which projects through a hole or opening in the side of the outer box. As the in ner casing is revolved the water is forced be tween the obliquely-arranged strips, and the clothes are cleansed, the water escaping through the perforations in the sides thereof.

For the sake of convenience we haveplaced upon one of the sides of the inner casing a rubbing-board, which may be utilized, when so desired, to cleanse the clothes by hand.

, Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--.

In a washing machine, the combination, with an outer box or casing having a hinged top, and slots formed upon its sides, of an inner casing or box constructed substantially octagonal in form,said casinghaving obliquely arranged strips E, strips F. arranged near the lower end of each alternate strip E, openings in the sides .of the box or casing L), and a crank or handle for operating the same, substantially as set forth.
