To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM Avnns, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Switches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of arailroad-switch to which my improvement has been applied, part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the broken line m x r, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the broken line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the jointed end of a part of the connectingrod, the fastening-bolts being shown in section.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the adjustment of the operating parts of a railroad-switch and promote convenience in the use of such switches.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
A represents the boX or case of the switch. The side parts of the top of the case A are rabbeted to receive the switch plates B, of which 0 are the rails of the main track, D the rails of the branch track, E the stationary tongue, and F the movable tongue.
G are the side sections of the oscillating plate, the ends of which are formed upon the end parts of two cross-bars, H.
Upon the outer sides of the. centers of the crossbars H are formed recessed or socket lugs l, which rest and oscillate upon pivotlugs J, attached to the inner sides of the upper parts of the case A, The movement of the oscillating plate G H is limited by lugs K, formed upon or attached to the lower parts of the inner edges of the switch-plates B. The
space between the side sections, G, is filled by a plate,L, the ends of which rest in rabbets M in the top edges of the ends of the case A, so that the central section, L, will be stationary, and will be held securely in place. The central section, L, is provided with ringhandles N, placed in recesses in its upper sur- The lower end of the pin 0 passes through an 1 eye in the end of the connecting-rod Q,which is secured in place upon the said pin by apin or nut. The other end of the connecting-rod Q is pivoted to the lower arm of the elbowlever B, which is pivoted at its angle to the upper end of the slotted standard S, formed upon or attached to the crossbar T, secured to the lower part of the case A. The upper arm of the elbow-lever R is forked, and is pivoted to a lug, U, attached to or formed upon the side section, G, of the oscillating plate, so that the tongue F will be moved by the os cillation of the said plate. The connectingrod Q is made in two parts or sections, the adjacent ends of which overlap and are secured to each other by three (more or less) bolts, V. The overlapped adjacent ends of the sections of the rod Q have short longitud inal slots WV formed in them to receive the bolts V, so that by loosening the nuts of the bolts V the said rod Q can be slightly lengthened or shortened, so that the oscillation of the plate G H can be made to give to the tongue F exactly the amount of movement required in adjusting the said tongue. The 0scillating plate is operated by the weight of the animal drawing the car. If the animal is driven on the right or left hand plate G, the pivoted tongue will be moved toward or from the main rail, thus permitting the car to run on the main rails or be automatically switched to the branch rails D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a railroad-switch, with the oscillating plate G H, elbow-lever R, and pivoted tongue F, of the sectional rod Q, connected at its opposite ends to the elbowlevcr and tongue, and provided with slots W in its adjacent overlapped ends, and the fast- I bell-crank levervR, pivoted thereto and pivening-bolts V, for adjusting the length of the otally connected to one side of the oscillating rod to give exactly the necessary amount of frame, pin 0, extending from the pivoted movement to the switch-tongue, substantially tongue through the casing, and the rod Q,
