J. MILTON HAMMILL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COVERING FOR STEAM-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,750, dated February 3, 1885.
(Model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, J. MILTON HAMMILL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Non-Conducting Coverings for Steam-Pipes, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improved form of non-conducting covering for steam-pipes, boilers, and other surfaces, as more fully de scribed hereinafter.
rIhe main feature of my invention consists in constructing the covering of a series of superposed layers of backing having applied thereto, by an adhesive material, a facing or facings of granulated cork, which, whileitself a non-conductor, will leave open passages between the layers, allowing a free circulation of air through them.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of a steam-pipe withiny improved covering applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the construction of the covering and its application to the pipe, and Fig. 3 is an end view of a section of covering ready to be applied. l
A is the steam-pipe or other surface to be covered, and B is the covering, which consists, essentially, of a series of superposed layers ot' pape Vstraw-board, or muslin,or similar backing,""" haviiigapplied `to one or both of its faces, with shellac or any suitable cement, a facing or coating, b', of suitable thickness, of granulated cork or equivalent material. The backing Z) is first prepared With its granulated facing or facings b', and when itis to be applied to piping may then be Wound in spiral or separate layers directly on the pipe itself or on a mandrel, the layers being united, so far as desirable, by cement. When the layers are wound on a separate mandrel, they are formed into sections of covering B of suitable length.l and split longitudinally for application tothe.
I prefer to combine with the covering B an g outer coating, a, of asbestus paper or suitable material, and` where the pipe A or other surface to be covered is to be subjected to excessive heat an intermediate layer, a, o'l" asbestus paper may be used.
I claim as my invention- A non-conductor covering for steam-pipes and similar surfaces, said covering consisting of superposed layers of paper or other material having granulated cork adhesively applied to its surface, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. MILTON HAMMILL.
