GREGORY JENNINGS, OF WEST CAIRO, OHIO.
TILE-KILN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,660, dated February 3, 1885.
Application filed October 20, 188-1. (Model) T 0 rl-ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GREGORY JENNINGS, of \Vest Cairo, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improvement in Tile-Kilns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction in kilns for burning tiles, having the object to permit regulation of the heat, and consequently the proper burn ing of the tiles, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of a kiln of the improved construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail section.
The kiln is of a circular form, with walls A built upon a suitable foundation, and around the Walls at the bottom are built the series of fire-boxes and air-boxes B G. The boxes B connect with the internal draft-pipes, D, and the air boxes or chamber (3 connect with two arches, E, that cross each other at the bottom of the kiln. The arches E are connected by the curved arches F, which are set apart, so as to form circular air-chambers that insure uniform draft throughout. The air-boxes G are provided with fines G, rising at the outside of the kiln, and, except when cleaning out. these boxes 0 are closed at their outer ends. At His the entrance to thekiln,\vhich is closed by a double brick-wall filled in with ashes during the burning, and a tile is inserted through a hole in the wall as a peephole. Near the top of wall A is a peephole,
I, for use in watching the operation. so that the proper time for changing the draft can be ascertained. cutting oii' the tines G. By opening and closing these dampers the draft is changed, the hot air going out or cold air rushing in at the peep-hole I. By this construction and arraugment of the lines and arches a downward draft can be used and changed as necessary in order to burn the tiles hard at the bottom and not too hard in the top part of the kiln. Thecross-arches and air-spaces insure an even degree of heat at the center and sides of the kiln. The floor for receiving the tiles is formed by setting bricks on the arches E F. In thecrown of the kiln there are holes for exit ofthe workmen, which are to beclosed, and only opened to cool off the kiln. These holes may, if it is desired to change to an updraft kiln, be left open and the dues be arranged accordingly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desi re to secure by Letters Patent-- in a tile-kiln, the body A, in combination with the fire-boxes B, arranged externally of said body and having the tines D disposed internally of said body, the external valved air-chambers having external airflues, G, and iiues E, arranged within said body and crossing each other, and the circular ai'rilues F, connecting said air-tlues E from center to air cuinference of the body and opening into said body above, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GREGORY JENNINGS.
