Description

STATES IlNiTE PATENT i rrrce.
LINING FOR CARPETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,390, dated January 2'7, 1885.
Application filed October 6, 1884. (Specimens) T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. THoMPsoN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lining for Carpets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my improvement is to produce a permanent lining for carpets which, while durable and cheap, will yet be very dry, warm, and elastic. To this end I employ granulated cork, which I attach to a fioor by means of an adhesive substance.
The method which I have found best adapted for carrying out my improvement is as follows: I first spread glue, paste, or other adhesive substance upon a floor by means of a brush or otherwise. I then preferably spread coarsely-granulated cork over the adhesive substance while the latter is still Wet. After allowing a sufficient length of time for the cork to set properly in the adhesive substance, which time will vary according to eonditions, I preferably apply, as before, a coating of glue, paste, or other adhesive substance upon the layer of granulated cork first spread. I then spread another layer of granulated cork upon the adhesive material last a layer of paper, or cloth and paper, pasted or secured together in any suitable manner on the top of the bed of cork, which serves to keep dust and dirt therefrom.
I do not limit myself to any number of applications of cork and adhesive substance, as
I may use one or many; neither do I limit myself to the use of cork of different degrees of granulation. By this process I succeed in making a lining which is noiseless, elastic, and soft, and which will remain permanently upon the floor. It may be swept without injury, and is practically indestructible. It also corrects any uneveness in and fills the cracks of the floor, producing alevcl and permanently-elastic surface.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The process of making a lining for carpeting consisting in applying a coating of glue, paste, or other adhesive substance to a floor, spreading granulated cork upon the adhesive substance, and subsequently allowing the same to set, substantially as specified.
2. The process of making a lining for carpeting consisting in applying a coating of glue, paste, or other adhesive substance to a fioor, spreading coarsely-granulated cork upon the adhesive substance, allowing the cork and adhesive substance to become dry and set, subsequently applying a coating of glue, paste, or other adhesive substance to the first-named layer of cork, spreading upon the same a layer of finely-granulated cork, and subsequently allowing the same to set, substantially as specified.
3. The process of making a lining for carpeting consisting in applying a coating of 7 glue, paste, or other adhesive substance to a floor, spreading a layer of granulated cork upon the adhesive substance, allowing the same to set, and subsequently spreading upon said cork a layer of paper or cloth and'paper, substantially as specified.
