T. J. POSTER.` SQUIB, MATCH, AND TOUGH PAPER SAFETY B0X@Y No. 311,183.
Patented Jan- 2*'7, 1885.
JJVVEJVTOR W'ITJV'ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS JEFFERSON FOSTER, OF SHENANDOAH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE W. GAIL, ERNST SCHMEISSER, AND CHRISTIAN AX, OF
BALTIMORE7 MARYLAND.
SQUIB, MATCH, AND TOUCH-PAPER SAFETY-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,183, dated January 27, 1885.
Application filed October 25, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Beit known that I, THOMAS J. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shenandoah, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Squib, Match, and Touch-Paper Safety-Boxes, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention,
ro such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to miners squib,1natch, and touch-paper safety-boxes, and has for its object to provide a box for miners7 use which shall be separated into compartments adapted to receive squibs, matches, and touch-paper, and effectually protect the same from dampness in the mines, the whole being inclosed Within a small compass and` in convenient 2o form to be carried in the pocket. I accomplish this object in the manner1 hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompa- Dying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Like letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view ot' my combined squib,
3o match, and touch-paper safety-box with the top removed; Fig. '2, a longitudinal section of the same, showing its interior construction.
Fig. 3 is a top view ot' one of the covers of the box, showing the corrugated surface used for lighting matches. Fig. 4 is a modification.
The form of the box is preferably elliptical in cross-section, as shown in Fig. l, as this form is found to be more convenient for pocket use. It is preferably made of metal, though wood, 4o rubber, or other suitable material may be employed, if desired. It is provided at its ends with covers B and B,one of the covers,B,hav ing its top corrugated or rough, thus affording a convenience for lighting matches. The box is provided with an interior case,
a, which may bc of the form shown, and should extend through the entire length of the box, having the compartment or space b surrounding the same. The end of the case ct is soldered or otherwise secured to the bottom e o ofthe box, through which it passes. The compartments o and d are formed within the interior case by means ofthe partitionsf and f', placed at suitable distances within the same. The compartment b surrounding the interior case is intended to contain the squibs or fuses, the compartment c matches, and the compartment d at the opposite end of the box is adapted to contain a pack-age or roll of touch-paper.
I do not wish to confine myself to the particular form of cover described. Hinged covers provided with springs for openlng and `catches for securing the same when closed, such as I have shown in Fig. 4 ofthe drawings, 65 may be substituted for the cover adapted to tit over the ends of the box.
A box ofthe form described Will afford miners an opportunity of packing their squibs, matches, and touch-paper within small con'i- 7o pass, so that the same will be readily accessible when desired for use.
The box would be both inexpensive and Y durable, and if properly constructed would prevent the contents from injury from dampness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.A box for miners7 use having a compart- So ment at one end for matches, a separate compartment surrounding the same for squibs, and a Compartment at the opposite end of the box for touch-paper.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
