CLASP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,126, dated January 20, 1885.

Application filed June 4, 1884. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CYRUS H. HARDY, of Hingham, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide an improved clasp for shoes, gloves, and other articles having two parts to be detach ably connected.

The invention consists in a clasp composed of two members attached, one to the one part and the other to the other part of the two parts to be connected by the clasp, said members being provided at their opposite ends with devices, hereinafter described, whereby a they may be readily and securely connected,

said devices being'so constructed as to admit of the ready disconnection of the members.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an end View of the two membersof my improved clasp engaged with each other. Fig. 2 representsa longitudinal section of the same on line a" 00, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 represent perspective views of the members disconnected and detached from the shoe or other article on which they are used. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a modification.

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings, a and I) represent the members of my improved clasp, said members being attached, respectively, to the parts, 0 d, to be connected, said parts being, for example, the forward portions of the quarters of a shoe. The member a is a plate of metal having one end bent to form a hook, a", and is provided at its opposite end with a button or fastening device, 6, which is pivoted to cars ff on said plate. The member I) is also a plate of metal formed at one end to enter the recess within the hook at, and provided at its opposite end with two upwardly-bent ears, b b, constituting bearings for the button or fastening device 6. The ears b b are bent upwardly from the body of the plate, so as to form a recess between them, as shown in Fig. 3, for the reception of the ears f f, to which the fastening device is pivoted.

The button is then turned upwardly until its under side bears upon the upper edges of the ears I) b, the parts being so formed that when the button is in the position last de scribed it will exert a suificient pressure on the ears I) b to hold it in engagement with said ears. It will be seen that the two members are thus securely connected, their engagement, by means of the hook a and button 0, preventing them from being separated, while the projection of the ears f f into the recess in the member b prevents either member from moving edgewise independent-1y.

The projection of the tongue 1) into the loop or ring engages the two members, so that their outer ends cannot separate nor move edgewise independently.

I claim 1. A clasp composed of the member a, having a hook, a, at one end, and a pivoted fastening device at the other end, and the member b, adapted to engage at one end with said hook, and provided at the other end with ears b, or their specified equivalent, adapted to engage with the fastening device, as set forth.

2. A clasp composed of the member a, having a hook, at, at one end and a pivoted button, e, at the other end, and the member 1), formed at one end to engage said hook, and having at the other end the ears I) b, constituting bearings for the button, and separated by a recess, which receives the ears to which the button e is pivoted, as set forth.
