MACl-HNERY FOR DRYING DRUMS OR BARREL-BODIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,690, dated January 13,1885. Application filed January 25, 1884. (S model.)
To all whom db-may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE \VirsuINe'roN LARAWAY, of the city and county of Hartford, of the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machinery for Drying Drums or Barrel-Bodies Made of Paper-Pulp Molded into Proper Form; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in m the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a top View and horizontal section of certain parts of a machine embodying my invention, while Fig. 2 is a transverse and vertical section of it, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section ofit in part. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, and Fig. 5 an end view of the hydraulic press and certain of its appliances to'be described. Fig. (5 is a side view of one of the bars for connecting the hydraulic press with the machine-frame.
The nature of my invention is duly defined in the claims hereinafter presented.
WVith this machine a drum or barrel-body composed of paper pulp in a wet state and encompassing a metallic drum or supporter may be desiccated. In the drawings such a body is shown in section at a and its supporting metallic drum at b, the body being molded on the drum by a suitable machine. The body 0 and drum are placed in the space between two series of chambered voussoirs, A and B,which are concentric with each other, the voussoirs of each series being disposed with each other like those of a circular arch or the staves of a 3 5 barrel. Each voussoir has one or more chambers or channels, a, extending through it lengthwise, and opening into a chambered cap or cover, 0, and a chambered base or bottom, I). The two sets of voussoirs are arranged in a frame, E, into conical months in the top and bottom plates, 1) and c, of which the aforesaid cap 0 and base D are fitted, the base being immovably fixed in place by screws (1, going through it and screwed into the bottom plate,
4 5 c, of the said frame. The chamber of the base D is annular, it being shown at f, the chamber 9 of the cap being circular and shaped in diametric section, as represented in Fig. 2. The cap 0 is removable from the frame, which is furnished with a crane, F, for accomplishing such removal by means of a rope, h. Each internal voussoir has extending inward from it a flange, 1', whose inner edge is straight, and there is extending down in the space encompassed by the series of internal voussoirs what I term their supporter G, which consists of a series of disks, 7.", and a tube, Z, upon which they are arranged at equal or about equal distances apart. This tube opens into the chamber of the cap 0, and extending down from such cap into the lowest of the disks, and opens into a conical mouth, on, made therein. The inner set of voussoirs should be applied hinged or connected together in a manner to enable them, on the withdrawal of their supporter G from them, to be easily separated, folded, or collapsed to admit of the removal from them of theaforesaid barrel-bod ysupporter I), which is usually constructed in sections, so as to admit of it being readily detached from the barrel-body after the latter may have been dried. The outer set of voussoirs has mechair ism for moving each of its voussoirs rectilinearly and in a radial direction to the axis of the supporterG. This mechanism consists of a stout metallic ring, H, and a series of toggles, I, in number corresponding to that of the voussoirs of the set. Each voussoir has a toggle jointed to it and to an adjustable box, K, duly supported by the ring, and resting against a wedge, L, disposed between such box and the inner periphery of the ring. A screw, m, projects from the box through an car, at, extending from the wedge, a nut, 0, being screwed on the screw. By means of such nut 8 5 and screw the wedge can be driven forward, as occasion may require, for adjusting the connected voussoirs for its proper action on the barrel-body. The ring H rests on a series of friction-rollers, N, arranged in the frame E. At its outer periphery such ring bears against another series of friction-rollers, M, arranged in said frame, each of such friction-rollers be ing supported in asuitable carrier, 0, between which and the frame there is a wedge, 1?, for 9 5 moving the carrier to cause its roller to properly bear peripherally on the rin By partially revolving the ring the several voussoirs of the outer set will be simultaneously moved outward in radial directions, a counter movement of the ring producing inward movements of the voussoirs. For moving the said rings in the manner as explained, I employ one or more hydraulic presses, the cylinders and pistons oftwo of which are represented in the drawings, in which It are the cylinders, .and S the pistons. Two connection-bars, T, jointed to the ring, extend from it to and are fastened to a eross-head, U, fixed to each piston-rod. Furthermore, each cylinder R has trunnions 1 extending from it into bearings in two bars, V, projecting from the frame E, the lower bar being supported beneath the cylinders by a pedestal,W. The conical month an of the lower disk, 7c, of the supporter G is to receive and fit to a conical nose, 8, of an induction-pipe, X, for the conveyance of heated air into the tube of the said supporter, such induction-pipe being arranged as represented. There is to the chamber of the baseD an educiion-pipe, Y. 011 heated air being driven into the pipe of the supporter such air will be forced through such pipe into the chamber of the cap 0, and from thence down through I both series of voussoirs and into and out of the chamber in the base D, the air in its passage heating the voussoirs, and thereby causing themto impart heat to the moist barrelbody and its supporter, whiclnwith the voussoirs, should be provided with suitable means of orholes or apertures for allowing of escape of the moisture fromthe said barrelbody, such moisture being carried into the chamber of the base, and thence off by the eduction-pipe leading therefrom.
I would observe that in order to cover the joint between each two next adjacent voussoirs of the outer series there is fixed to one of them, and to extend and lap on the other in manner as shown in Fig. 3, a thin wedgeshaped plate or lip, t, such being to prevent the material of the barrel-body from being forced into the joint when the said voussoirs may be in the act of being closed upon such body.
The barrel-body, having been formed of paper-pulp by a suitable press or machine, and upon a metallic supporting-drum, as hereinbefore mentioned, is, with such drum, to be placed between the two sets of voussoirs, after which the inner set is to be forced outward by introducing within it the supporter G and closing down the cover or cap 0 upon the two sets of voussoirs. This having been accomplished, the ring is to be partially revolved, so as to force the outer set of voussoirs firmly up to the barrel-body. Hot air is next to be let into or caused to pass through the voissoirs of both sets, so as to properly heat them,
and thereby cause them to heat the barrelbody and effect its desiccation.
I claim in the said barrel-body-drying machine 1. The combination of the two series of chambered voussoirs and their chambered cap and base, arranged as set forth, and provided with mechanism for moving the outer set of said voussoirs in radial directions, substantially as specified.-
2. The combination of the movable supporter G, composed of the tube and series of disks, as described, with the two series of chambered voussoirs and their chambered cap and base, arranged and adapted to operate substantially and for the purpose as described.
3. The combination of the rotary ring and its series of toggles, as described, with the supporting-frame of such ring, and with the two series of chambered voussoirs and their chambered cap and base, arranged in such frame as represented.
4. The combination of the rotary ring and its series of toggles, as described, with the supportingframe of such ring and with the two series of chambered voussoirs, their chambered cap and base, and the tubular supporter applied to such cap, and consisting of a tube and series of disks, all being arranged and adapted to operate substantially and for the purpose as represented.
5. The combination of the adj ustable wedge, having mechanism for moving it lengthwise, with the rotary ring and each toggle thereof, and its adjustable box, adapted to such ring and one of the outer set of voussoirs, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of one or more hydraulic-press cylinders and pistons with the-rotary ring and its toggles and supporting-frame, and with the two series of chambered voussoirs and their chambered cap and base, all being substantially and to operate as specified and represented. V
7. The combination of the series of wedgeshaped plates or lips t, applied to the outer set of Voussoirs, as set forth, with the two sets of chambered voussoirs and their chambered cap and base, arranged and for use substan tially as represented.
S. The inner set of voussoirs, supporter G, having the tapering mouth, as set forth, in
combination with the hot-air-induction pipe,
, adapted to the chambered base, and provided with the tapering nose to enter and fit to such mouth, substantially as represented.
