RUBBER-FOR CLOVER HULLERS. I
Patentedi Jan. 6, 1,885.
JOIIN N. KAILOR, OF NEW'ARK, ASSIGNOR TO THE NEWARK MACHINE COMPANY, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
RUBBER FOR CLOVER-HULLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.310,522, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed August27, 188-!.
claims.
The invention is designed as an improve ment upon the rubber patented March 6, 187 7 No. 188,064, and is a modified form of a rubber set forth in an application by me filed simultaneously herewith, the title to both of which and to the present invention resides in the same party.
In the huller above mentioned and in all others known to me the ridges and grooves of one side are distinct and separate from those on the other side, the front and rear edges being smooth. 7 I11 my other application mentioned I continue these ridges and grooves up to a vertical web or prow, which serves as a sharp front to the rubber, the junction of each ridge with the prow or web forming four projections, which serve to break up the pods and heads of the clover.
The device set forth in this application is a modification of that construction in that it omits the web and makes the ridges and grooves merge into each other or continuous at the front. In other respects, however, it is similar, has parallel sides, and is chamfered or inclined obliquely downward to give a sharp front edge. The extreme front edge in the present case is undulating-or broken instead of being straight, and these alternate proj ections and grooves in the front edge serve cfiiciently to break up the pods and separate the heads of the clover.
The drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section taken on the line a; w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 13 designates the body of the rubber having fluted parallel sides, the corrugations b of one side being continu- (No model.)
ous with or merged into those on the other side, as shown. The front portion is made sharp, as seen at I), and this incline is made both on the body and ridges to give a toothed front to the rubber.
The rubber is made of steel, and the sharpened front allows it to gradually enter the material, while the alternate projections and grooves or depressions at the front present an efficicnt surface for breaking up the pods and disrupting the heads withwhich it comes into contact. This rubber has ashank, O,and may be provided with a thread, so as to be applied to an open cylinder "by a nut, as l); or it may be driven into a closed cylinder. I prefer the rectangular shank with the tap and nut. This rubber I find to be peculiarly effective upon the lower cylinder of a cloverhuller such as set forth in the patent referred to; but it may be applied with good results to either cylinder or concave.
The features of novelty and importance in this invention rest in the fluted parallel sides and the toothed front formed by continuing the grooves and ridges from one side to the other around the sharpened front.
I have hereinbefore shown and described the rubber as having parallel sides; but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to rubbers in which the sides are geometrically parallel, nor substantially so, since my improved construction can be employed on rubbers the sides of which are not parallel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 1. A rubber for clover-hullcrs,having fluted sides and a toothed prow or front formed by making the grooves and ridges of one side continuous with those of the opposite side, as set forth.
2. The rubber described, having parallel fluted sides, the beveled or sharpened front b, and the corrugations on one side made continuous with those on the opposite side to give a toothed contour to the front or prow, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
