MOSES G. FARMER, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
'MOVEM EMT-CURE APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,395, dated January 6, 1885.
(N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Moses G. FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Movement Cure, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is'to provide convenient apparatus for changing the position of the human body and producing artificial strain and tension upon certain parts of the same, and to remove pressure from other portions.
The invention consists in constructing a couch with two movable surfaces, upon which it is designed that the patient shall lie face downward, with the weight of the upper portion of the body resting upon the elbows upon one portion of the couch, while the thighs rest across the second portion.
Suitable mechanical devices are employed for causing the portion upon which the elbows rest to be tilted in such manner that the elbows themselves will be moved into a lower plane relativelyto the hands, while the thighs and feet are raised, the feet being moved to a greater elevation than the thighs.
The invention will be most conveniently described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a suitable stationary support for the various parts of the apparatus. Upon this support or frame there are placed two horizontal boards or cushions, B and B constituting the two movable surfaces of the couch. The former of these is pivoted at one end to the frame A, as shown at b. From near the other end of the cushion or table 13 there extends a pivoted link, 0, one end being pivoted to the cushion, and the other to a lever or beam, G. This beam or lever is pivoted at or near its center toa suitable stationarysupport, and at its remaining extremity it is pivoted. to a link,
0', which is also pivoted to the section B of the couch. The section B is pivoted to the stationary support at or near its center, as shown at e, and it is constructed with a lever, E, attached to the shaft or support of the sec tion B It will be understood from the foregoing description that when the lever E is moved in the direction indicated by the arrow, for i11- stance, the table B will be tilted and will assume the position shown in dotted lines. The movement of the table B will be communicated through the levers 0 G, and c to the table B, which in turn will be caused to assume the position shown in dotted lines, it being turned upon its hinge b".
Extending above the table B there is a table or cushion, B resting upon the table B", but capable of being moved. Extending from one end of the table 13 is an arm or lever, d, which is pivoted at a 15oint,b,to the stationary support A. V hen the table 13 is'tilted into the position shown in dotted lines, it will be evident that the section B of the couch will also be moved, being turned upon its center of support b and it will assume the position shown in dotted lines. There will, therefore, be occasioned a downward movement of the portion 13, turning upon its center 2/, and an upward movement of the portion B turning upon the center If.
Heretofore it has been necessary in employin g the apparatus constructed for the purpose of this invention for the attendant to grasp the feet or ankles of the patient and to raise them when the portion corresponding to the section B of the couch is raised, for the reason that no portion corresponding to the section B was employed. By this invention, however, not only the thighs, but the legs and ankles, will be supported by the section B. The point of support Z) of the section B may be rendered adjustable, if it is so desired, in any convenient manner-as, for example, by employing a series of holes, d", through the lever and a series of corresponding holes in the stationary support, through which the sup porting-bolt of the section is placed.
The parts are preferably so adjusted that when the portions 13 and B are in approximately their central points of movement the lever or beam 0 shall be in its horizontal position.
Any suitable means may be employed for imparting the necessary movement to the table B but the lever E is usually preferred.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a couch, the combination, substantial] y as hereinbefore' set forth, with the hinged secinbefore set forth, of a stationary support, a
couch divided transversely into two upper portions or sections, the first of which is pivoted at an intermediate point in its length, while the second is supported by a pivoted extension, and a system of levers, substantially such as described, for turning the first-named section downward and simultaneously moving the second section upward upon its pivot."
and vice versa, which levers are connected with the first-nained section at a point between its pivot and the end adjacent to the second section.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the section B, having the hinge b, the section 13 and the lever E, for moving the same, the beam 0, the links a and 0 respectively connecting said beam with said sections B and B and the section 13, having the pivoted extension d.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 26th day of August, A. D. 1884.
