UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD ROLL, OF VILKES-BARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR CONTROLLING RUNAWAY HORSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,822, dated January 6, 1885.
, Application iilcll September-211, 1554.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD ROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes- Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Device for Controlling Runaway Horses, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to from running away. To uncover the eyes of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is the horses head in perspective, having on a bridle to which the device is attached. Fig. 2 is a front view ofa bridle with the device attached, and Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the device about full size. Fig. 5 is a side view, and Fig. 6 a front view, of the same.
The object of the invention is to provide means to prevent horses from running away. I attain this object by the mechanism illus trated in the accompanying drawings.
To the front of the bridle, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, is fixed the device A, the construction of which is as follows: In the case B, Figs. 4., 5, and 6, is fitted arod, C, Fig. 4, having on its lower end an eye, D, and a collar, 0. Around the rod 0 is fixed a spiral expansion-spring, f, one end resting on the collar 0 and the other against a shoulder at r in the case B. To the eye D are attached the ends of two cords or small chains, H, the other ends of which are attached to the blinds I of the bridle. On the upper end of the rod 0 is formed an eye,-J, to which is attached a line, It, which is led back to the carriage or wagon, so as to be convenient to the hands of the driver.
(No model.)
In driving, should the horse become frightened or otherwise unmanageable and attempt to run away, the driver takes hold ofthe line It and pulls on it, which, through the rod 0 and the cords H, will cause the blinds I to I close over the eyes of the horse, and prevent 1 him from seeing, and thereby prevent him the horse again it is only necessary to release the tension on the line, and the spring f,pulling in the opposite direction, will cause the blinds to resume their normal-position.
Having since the filing of this application become aware of the existence of devices for preventing horses from running away prior to my invention thereof, I do not broadly claim such; but
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Inadevieeforcontrollingrunawayhorses, the eonibinatiouof the case B with the rod 0, the eye D, the collar e, the shoulder g, the springf, the cords or chains H, and the eye J, to form the device A, all substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a bridle, of the case B, the rod 0, the eye D, the collar 6, the springf, the shoulder g, the cords or chains H, and line 7;, all substantially as described.
LEONARD ROLL.
