UNITE@ @rares JOI-IN LANE, OF HYDE Ferretti? Ormea CU LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part oi' Letters Patent No. 310,289, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed September 18,1954.
To @ZZ wwnt it' may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyde Fark, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivators, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to straddlerow cultij vators in which the drag bars or gangs are held upright by the coupling, permitting them both lateral and perpendicular play; and it consists in a new and improved coupling and yoke connecting the gangs to the axle.
Referring to the drawings, like letters refer i 5 to like parts in all the figures, in which Figure l is a side elevation view showing the parts in which my improvements lie. Fig. 2
is a plan or top view of same, taken on the longitudinal center, dotted lines in Fig. l.
2o Fig, 3 is a rear view taken on the perpendicular center, dotted lines m a; in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofthe yoke C, and Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview of the coupling Il.
A represents the ordinary arched axle; E,
the ganghead to which the drag-bars are attached; I), the sleeve to which the said head is rigidly attached, all of which are well known and in common use.
O represents the yoke, constructed with an 3o opening or long slot, e, in its front end, 7e., to admit the wing fw, and a central perforati on, fi, to admit the central bolt, c, and pivotal connection on the said wing, arms 7.: pro- .j ecting rearward from the top and bottom ofthe said front end, with perforations in their outer ends to admit vthe bolt g, securing the sleeve I), with end bearings pivotally connecting to the said arms, as will be understood, as shown in the drawings. I sometimes provide the said 4o yoke with the lever m, projecting upwardly, with a hook or eye, a, inits outer end, adapted to be connected with a spring to rock the said yoke on the central bolt, c, as will be understood by the drawings, and I sometimes use .t5 perforations p near the outer end of the said (No model.)
slot, to admit the bolt q, to assist in compressing the sides of the slot to aelose orsnug bea-r-` ing on the wing w, and when the parts become worn and slack by the wear in use such slack may be taken up by screwing up the nut on the 5o bolt, as will be understood by the drawings.
In operation the gangs have a movement up and down pivotally on the hinged joint-bolt c, closely in rear of the axle, and a lateral movementpivotally on the hinged joint-boltg, elose- 5 5 ly in rear of the former hinged joint, and are rigidly held upright in all positions, and whenever the said hinged joints become slack or loose jointed by wear in use such slack may be taken up by tightening the nuts on the said 6o bolts, whereby the machine may be kept in better order than heretofore.
Having thus set forth my invention, I claim- L l. The yoke O, provided with the long slot c, perforation t', and perforated arms 7a k, sub stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a cultivator, a yoke provided with a central perforation adapted to be connected pivotally to the rear end ofthe coupling, perfo- 7o rated arms adapted to be connected to the pipe or sleeve, and a horn or lever projecting upwardly, adapted to be connected to a spring to rock the said yoke, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the coupling provided with a tail or wing, of the yoke provided with a slotted front end, a central perforation, a bolt seated in the said perforation, connecting the said yoke pivotally to the said 8o wing, and said bolt adapted to compress the sides of the said slot to a close and snug bearing upon said wing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Hyde Fark, Illinois, August 30, 1884.
