MECHANICAL MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,256, dated January 6, 1885.
Application filed December 10, 1884. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BIADISON CooN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Motors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in mechanical manual motors; and the object of the invention is to provided a device of this kind that will be adapted to the various uses to which handrnotors are applicable, whereby the same machine may be used for a variety of purposes; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described,and particularly pointed out in the claims.

A is the frame of the motor, and B is the main driving shaft, journaled in boxes 0 O, secured to the standards A A of the frame by means of the bolts a and thumb-nuts, 6. These bolts a pass through vertical slots 0 in said standards, so that the shaft B may be adscribed.
D is the operatingcrank when the machine is driven by hand, and it may be replaced by a suitable pulley when wind, water, or steam is used.
E F is a divided shaft the outer ends of which are journaled in the frame A, and the inner ends in a central standard, G. This standard is provided with a tenon or tongue, H, which extends through the cross-bar of the frame, and a wedge shaped key, I, passes through a slot, K, in said tenon at a right angle thereto, so as to removably secure the standard rigidly and firmly to the frame.
L is the top section of the standard,and forms the cap for the bearing of the journals of the two shafts E F. Said cap may be secured to the standard by tongue and groove, as shown, or any other suitable means. i
M is a band-wheel on the main-shaft B, and N isa similar though smaller pulley on the shaft E, and a straight belt, 0, connects the two wheels, thereby driving the shaft E in the same direction with the main shaft. A similar band-wheel, M, and pulley N are secured in the same relation on the shaftB and on the shaft F, but in this case the belt 0 is crossed, so as to give the shaft F a motion the reverse of the driving-shaft BQ It will thus be seen that the shaft E rotates in one direction and the shaft F in the opposite direction, which is a very desirable feature when the motor is applied to a churn or a washing-machine, as then the paddles or heaters 011 the shafts E and F may be set at an incline, so as to cause the liquid to fiow from the ends to the center, or vice versa, as desired, and in either way keep up a constant current in addition to the ordinary agitation caused by the beater-arms.
\Vhen the belts become loose, they maybe readily tightened by raising the shaft B through the medium of the boxes 0 0, being adjusted in the slots 0 c and bolts to.
WVhen it is not desirable to use belts on the band-wheel, gear-wheels may be substituted, and an idler used in one set to give the required reverse motion.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
1. The main driving-shaft B, provided with pulleys and belts, wherebythe secondary shafts E F will be caused to rotate in opposite directions, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the main driving-shaft and its connected mechanism, of the auxiliary shaft E F and the removable central bearing-standard, G, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Themain shaft B, mounted in boxes 0 0, adj ustably secured to the frame, in combination with the auxiliary shafts E F, and means for operating them in opposite directions, as and for the purpose set forth.
