GEORGE HENRY OAUGHREAN, OF EAYMORE, ASSIGNOR OF TIVO-TI-IIRDS TO JAMES \V. DUOKIVORTH AND LEIVIS 1?. SUMMERS, BOTH OF HARRISON- VILLE, MISSOURI.
DEVICE FOR CONVERTING MOTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,692, dated December 23, 1884.
Application filed June 18, 1884. (No model.) v
idly on the same, and two clutch-pulleys held loosely on the shaft between the fixed d'isks, on which clutch-pulleys cables or ropes are I 5 wound in reverse directions, and which ropes have their ends secured in the end pieces of a sliding frame, whereby when the frame is reciprocated the shaftis revol v ed from the clutchpulleys, which act on the clutch-disks on the shaft.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device for converting motion, parts being in section; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same.
A shalt, A, is journalcd in two bearings,]3, on a base, 0, and on this shaft are mounted two ratchetdisks, D D, having the teeth formed on the sides facing each other, and the said disks being arranged a short distance from each other.
Between the disks D D two pulleys, E E, are loosely mounted on the shaft A, which pulleys are provided with necks F F,:having ratchet-te'eth formed on the ends, the ratchet-teeth on the necks F F being inclined reverse] y to 40 those on the adjacent disks D D. A frame,
K, is provided with longitudinal grooves in the outer surface of the top and bottom pieces, into which groovesguide-strips I pass, which are secured 011 the base 0 and on the under side of a plate, G, projecting over the sliding frame K from an upright on the base.
The
frame K is thus guided to reciprocate. To the tops and bottoms of the end pieces of the frame K cables or ropes H H are secured, which are coiled once around the pulleys E E in inverse directions, and run in grooves in the rims of the pulleys. hen the frame K moves in the direction of the arrow a, the cable H revolves the pulley E in the direction of the arrow 1), and as the neck F of the pulley E engages with the clutch-disk D the said clutch-disk and the shaft A will be re volved in the direction of the arrow 3). Vhen the frame K moves in the inverse directionof the arrowa, the pulley E is revolved in the direction of the arrow 1), and. by means of the necks E and the disk D revolves the shaft A in the direction of the arrow b. The reciprocating movement of the frame K is thus converted into a rotary movement of the shaft A.
In place of the clutches shown and described, any other suitable clutching device can be used.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7c 1.. In a device for converting motion, the combination, with the shaft A, of the clutchdisks D D, mounted rigidly on the same, the pulleys E E, having clutch-necks F F, and mounted loosely on the shaft A between the 7 5 disks D D, the sliding frame K, and the cables H H, secured on the sliding frame, and wound reverse] y around the pulleys E E, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a device for converting motion, the combination, with a shaft on which clutchdisks are rigidly mounted, of clutch-pulleys mounted loosely on the shaft between the clutch-disks, a reciprocating frame sliding on suitable guides, and of ropes or cables secured 8 5 in the ends of the frame and passed over the loose clutch-pulleys in reverse directions, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEO. HENRY )AUGHREAN.
