SPECEFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,651, dated December 23, 1884.
Application filed April 19, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, @Lannion E. Samoan, of Lancaster, in the county of Fnie and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement .in Steam-Generators, ot' which the following is a specification.
rilhis invention relates to an improvement in that class ot' steam-generators which are composed, of a series ot' similar cast sections suitably connected at their upper and lower ends to establish communication between the steam and water spaces ot' the respective seotions.
The object of my invention is to lconstruct the sections of the boiler or steamgenerator in such manner that the heat generated by the burning fuel is thoroughly utilized, and so that the generator shall be simple in construction and 'capable of being easily cleaned when required.
My invention consists ol" the improvements in the construction ot' the boiler which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, consisting of two sheets, Figure l is an end elevation ot the steam-generator with a portion of the inclosing-casing broken away. Fig. f is alongitudinal section of the generator. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in line .t x, Fig. l. Fig. el is a horizontal section in line y y, Fig. 2. Fig.
5 is a vertical cross-section in line z, Fig. 2. Fig. (i is a vertical longitudinal section inline w to, Fig. il. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, of the pipe-connections at the upper ends of the sections. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, olrl the cleaning-tubes. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the sections.
Lilie letters of reference refer to like parts in the several ngures.
A represents the brick-work or other casing inclosing the steam-generator, and A the grate arranged in the lower portion thereof above the ash-pit A2.
ct represents the rire-door; a', the ash-pit door, and a2 and ai lines leading, respectively, from the upper and lower portions of the casing A to the chimney.
B represents the upright sections of the gencrater, arranged transversely in two rows on opposite sides oit' the grate between the front section, C, and the rear section, D, the two latter sections extending entirely across the generator, as represented in Fig. 4t.
Each oi' the sections B consists of a hollow body, overhanging the grate, and a leg or down wardly-extending portion, B2, resting on the masonry or other support on one side of the grate. The lops of the several sections B lit closely against each other when the sections are in place, so as to form a tight top. The inner faces, t', and the sides Ifl ol' the sections recede from the edges of the top b, forming llame-spaces c between the inner faces,l b', and llame-spaces c between the sides b. rlhe inner faces, b', and sides Zr connect with the top by easy curves, as shown.
j' are upright hollow extensions or enlarge` ments formed on the sides b of the body portions LB ot the sections, and communicating witlrthe hollow interior space of the same.
j" are upright elongated flame-passages extending through the bodies B of the sections on the outer sides of the enlargements f.
ft are similar hollow enlargements formed along the inner edges of the legs B2, and eX- tending upwardly along the body portions B. The enlargements f are made so large that their faces rest against each other when the sections are in place, while the enlargements f are smaller, leaving Haine-spaces f3 between their faces, as represented in Fig. 4. The enlargerncntsfj"2 do not extend to the top b of the section, but leave namespaces ft between their upper ends and the top.
g represents similar upright hollow enlargements formed along the outer. edges of each section, extending from the top downwardly, and terminating above the lower ends of the legs i', so as to leave passages g below the lower ends or' the enlargements.
7L represents upright llame-passages lormed the enlargements f2 and g.
I represents a space or passage formed between the sides and rear walls of the casing A and the generator, and communicating with the chimney by the tlucs at a3.
J represents a laterally-projecting hollow lug or ear formed on the upper portion of each section 5 and j represents short pipes, whereby the lugs J ot' two adjoining sections are connected. The pipes j are each provided with through the body B of each section between lOO screw-threads at opposite ends, and screwed into correspondingly-threaded openings in the lugs J, and secured by jam-nuts j', as represented in Fig. 7. The pipes j establish communication between the steam-spaces of the several sections. Similar pipes, k, areV employed for establishing communication between the water-spaces at the lower ends of the several sections.
L represents an opening formed in the lower portion of the front section, C, in line with the lire-door @,fo'r giving access to the grate. The front and rear sections, C and D, are provided on their inner sides with hollow enlargements I5 fj .f/,Corresponding with the enlargements of the section B.
m are semicircular recesses formed in the faces ofthe outer enlargements, g, of the several sections near their upper ends and above the upper ends of the enlargements ffg.
a are tubes resting with their inner ends in the adjoining recesses m of two sections, and extending outwardly through openings in the casing A, their outer ends being closed by removable caps or covers n', as represented in Figs. 3 and 8.
rIhe enlargements f f2 g and the passages f h divide the interior space of each section, so as to present their bodies of water to the acf tion of the flame and hot gases, thereby increasing the heating-surface and enabling the apparatus to generate steam quickly and economically.
The enlargements f2 forni the outer walls of the combustion chamber in which the flame and hot gases rise from the fuel on the grate to the top of the generator.
The spaces between the enlargements f2 and g form diving or return iues, by which the hot gases descend from the top of the generator to the lower openings, g', through which the gases escape into the passage I, surrounding the sides and rear end of the generator.
Vhen it is desired to clear the sections from ashes, 85e., which may adhere to the same, the caps n are removed and steam-jets are introduced through the tubes n, which jets can be readily directed against the innermost porenlargements j, and passages g below the enlargements g, and intermediate llame passages, f h, extending through the sections, substantially as set forth.
2. In a steam-generator, a section, B, composed of an overhang-ing body, B', downwardly-extending leg B2, upright enlargements ff2 g, and intermediate dame-passages,
f h, substantially as set forth. l
3. The combination, with the intermediate sections, B, provided with upright enlargements f2 g, front and rear sections, C and D, constructed on their inner sides with similar enlargements, f2 g, hollow lugs J, formed on the several sections, and connecting -pipes j and 7c., substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the sections B, having their tops b constructed to rest closely against each other, and having receding inner faces, b', and sides b2, forming flame-passages, of the projecting enlargements f2 g, formed on the sides of the sections, front and rear sections, C and D, and an inclosing-case, A, substantially as set forth.
5. In a steam-generator, a section, B, provided along its outer edge with an enlargement, g, having a recess, m, near its upper end, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with the casing A and the sections B, having enlargements g, provided with recesses m, of the tubes n, extending from said recesses outwardly through the casing, and provided with removable covers, substantially as set forth.
W'itness my hand this 14th day of April, 1884-.
OLARANCE E. SAFFGRD.
