3,094,728 LOCK-TIGHT BROOM HANDLE CONNECTOR AND SCRAPER Oscar F. White, Chatham, N.Y., assignor of one-tenth to Jesse D. Langdon, East Rockaway, N.Y. Filed Sept. 8, 1960, Ser. No. 54,767 3 Claims. (Cl. 15-111) This invention pertains to broom or brush handles together with means for locking a handle in a fixed operative position.
The primary object of the invention is to provide adjustable connecting means combined with a bristle holding back of a broom or brush including an arrangement of oppositely divergent flanges concomitant a scraper to form a handle connector for a sweeping device of the character described hereinafter.
Other and further objects and purposes will appear dur ing the progress of the specification as illustrated by the drawing, which illustrates two forms of reduction to practice and may be changed within the scope of the claims.
Of the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a transverse median sectional view intersecting all of the elements of the invention connected to the bristle holding back of a substantially rectangular brush or broom.
FIG. 2 is an exploded view showing the various elements of the invention aligned for assembly.
FIG. 3 is a top plan View of a species of the invention using a round type of broom or brush.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing wherein is illustrated a broom and handle connector means 1 provided with flange means 2, projecting downwardly and laterally from a handle attaching means provided by a handle socket 3. Span means 4 is integral with and extends forwardly of socket 3 which is disposed at a suitable predetermined angle diverging upwardly and rearwardly of span means 4, to establish a convenient working position for a handle, not shown, adapted to be secured in socket 3'. Scraper blade means 5 is provided with a span portion 6 intcrlapping and disposed parallel with span means 4. Adjustable bolt means 7 is provided with an adjusting nut and is extended thru matching perforations provided for span means 4 and span portion 6 of scraper blade means 5 together with a rigid back 8 provided with bristle or brush elements. The scraper blade means is bent at a point indicated by numeral 9 the bend being short of the upper border of the forward edge of back 8 that is opposite to an edge of said back 8 that is embraced and impinged by flange means 2. A portion of the scraper means 5 for ward of bend 9 projects downwardly toward, impinges and rests against the proximate border of the forward edge of back 8.
When the nut of adjustable bolt means 7 is tightened, span means 4 and span portion 6 together with flange means 2 and the inside of scraper blade 5, straddling back 8, are urged toward back 8 which is wedged between flange means 2 and the inside of scraper blade means that terminates in a scraper edge.
It will be noted the projection forming flange means 2 is one with the socket portion of span means 4, and the 3,094,728 Patented June 25, 1963 scraper 5 including span portion 6 is made of sheet metal imparting resilient qualities to said scraper 5, whereby resilient tension is maintained between said scraper 5 and brush back 8 or 8a when the nut is tightened on the bolt thereby creating a lock-tight tension against and tending to prevent loosening of the nut provided for bolt 7.
The distance spanned between bend 9 and flange means 2 is less than the width of back 8, the described broom handle connector and scraper is locked tightly unitary with back 8 by nutted bolt means 7, holding the foregoing described organization of elements firmly together as a unit.
It will be noted that the projection 2 is one with the socket portion of the span means 4--6, and the scraper S is made of sheet metal imparting resilient qualities to said scraper 5, whereby resilient tension is maintained between said scraper 5 and the brush back 8- 841 when the nut is tightened on the bolt thereby creating a locktight tension against and tending to prevent loosening of the nut provided for bolt 7.
Having described my invention and the operation thereof, the following claims are made:
1. A device of the character described comprising broom handle connector means including in combination, flange means projecting laterally from handle attaching means provided by a socket, span means integral with and extended forwardly of said socket, scraper blade means bent to form a span portion interlapping and disposed parallel with said span means, adjustable bolt means extended thru the interlapping span means extended forwardly of said socket and the span portion of said scraper blade means, said flange means extended across and impinging a proximate edge of a broom back adjacent said socket, the back provided with sweeping elements for the broom, a portion of said scraper blade next to the bend terminating in a scraper edge and impinging a proximate border of that edge of said back forward of and opposite to the edge of said back proximate to said flange means, the portion of said scraper impinging the forward edge of said back and said flange means being interconnected with said span portion and straddling said back, whereby, said adjustable bolt means is eifective to urge the components of the foregoing described organization together and lock same tightly together.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a lock-tight broom handle connector and scraper, comprising handle attaching means provided with flange means extended downwardly and laterally thereof and span means extended forwardly of the attaching means, scraper means formed by a resilient sheet metal member bent to form a scraper blade extended forwardly of the bend at an angle divergent from the plane of said span means and convergent with respect to a plane of alignment extended forwardly of the terminus of said flange means and parallel with the plane of said span means, a span portion formed by said sheet metal member extended from the bend toward and arranged for interlapping said span means, said span portion and said span means provided with matched perforations for adjustable bolt means provided to extend thru said span means for securing and locking the broom handle and scraper tightly to a bristle holding back provided for a broom to which the broom handle and scraper is to be attached.

A device of the character described comprising attaching means for a broom and brush handle, flange means projecting laterally from the handle attaching means, span means together with scraper blade means extended forwardly of said handle means, said flange means and said scraper blade means together with said span means arranged to straddle and impinge a bristle h'olding back provided for a broom, including adjustable bolt means insertable thru said span means and the back, said bolt means provided with nut means whereby, a broom handle and connector and scraper is formed and adapted to lock tightly in a unit with the broom.

Claims (1)

1. A DEVICE OF THE CHARACTER DESCRIBED COMPRISING BROOM HANDLE CONNECTOR MEANS INCLUDING IN COMBINATION, FLANGE MEANS PROJECTING LATERALLY FROM HANDLE ATTACHING MEANS PROVIDED BY A SOCKET, SPAN MEANS INTEGRAL WITH AND EXTENDED FORWARDLY OF SAID SOCKET, SCRAPER BLADE MEANS BENT TO FORM A SPAN PORTION INTERLAPPING AND DISPOSED PARALLEL WITH SAID SPAN MEANS, ADJUSTABLE BOLT MEANS EXTENDED THRU THE INTERLAPPING SPAN MEANS EXTENDED FORWARDLY OF SAID SOCKET AND THE SPAN PORTION OF SAID SCRAPER BLADE MEANS, SAID FLANGE MEANS EXTENDED ACROSS AND IMPINGING A PROXIMATE EDGE OF A BROOM BACK ADJACENT SAID SOCKET, THE BACK PROVIDED WITH SWEEPING ELEMENTS FOR THE BROOM, A PORTION OF SAID SCRAPER BLADE NEXT TO THE BEND TERMINATING IN A SCRAPER EDGE AND IMPINGING A PROXIMATE BORDER OF THAT EDGE
