Description

(No Model.) J. NEWTON.
- FENCE. No. 309,242. Patented Dec 16 1884.
UNTTnn STaTns PATENT Trice.
JOHN NElVTON, OF CLIFFORD, INDIANA.
FENCE.
FLT C'IFECATEQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,242, dated December 16, 188%.
Application filed March 17, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN N nwron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifford, in the county of Bartholomew and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fence, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fences.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and efficient means for supporting the rails of a portable fence, all as hereinafter set forth, andpa-rticularlypointed out in the claim. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portable fence illustrating my improved means for supporting the rails thereof in proper position. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the fence-post, illustrating the connection of the standards to the base-pieces.
Like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that I have shown in the present application the post described and claimed in my patent No. 285,427, dated September 25, 1883, but
no novelty is herein claimed for the said post, except such as it bears with relation to my present improvements.
In the drawings, A designates the post, comprising upright standards B B, triangular in shape, and arranged on the same line between two base-strips, G C, a space, a, existing between the two uprights, B.
By reference to Fig. 2 will be seen the mode employed to construct the post. One of the uprights B is secured permanently between the base-strips C, and the other is detachable and held to the former by clevises or other suitable means. A block, S, is secured between the base-strips, and after the fence has been set up the detachable standard or upright is inserted at its lower end through the space between the base-strips and the two standards or uprights secured together. This block S prevents any backward movement of the detachable standard.
The fence is composed of a series of horizon tal boards or rails, D D, connected together by upright battens E E, one of the battens of each section of the fence being cut away or notched, as shown at b, at its lower corner, said notch enabling the batten to fit over the upper edge of the base-strips O of the post. All of the rails D except the bottom rail, G,extend through the space a between the uprights B of the post, the ends of the top rails, D, being provided with notches 6 along their lower edge, and recesses or cut-away portions d on one of their sides, said notch e permitting the ends of the rails to rest upon shoulders f, formed on the inner faces of one of the uprights B, and the recess d enabling the ends to fit neatly between the inner faces of the said uprights, so that when the clevis F or other device is applied to fasten the uprights together the ends of the rails D willbeheld secure] yin position, and thus the fence will be sufficiently strong to resist successfully the effects of time and the conditions of the weather. The bottom rail, G, terminates at the batten, and does not extend beyond the same, and since the batten is notched to fit over the upper end of the basestrips said bottom rail will abut against the side faces of the strips, so that the fence will be held in an upright position. Each of the top rails, D, are provided on their ends with the notches c and recesses d before referred to, so that each rail, exceptthe bottom rail, will project through the space a in the posts and rest on the shoulders f or other means, said shoulders or other means being arranged at various intervals apart along the inner faces of one of the uprights B of the post.
It will be seen that when the clevis F or other fastening device is applied to draw the uprights B together at their upper ends, said uprights will clamp or bind against the ends of the rails and hold them in their seats. Thus the rails will be held securely from displace ment, and the fence properly supported in an upright position.
As shown in Fig. 1, I may employ both wires and rails for the fence, the wires alternating with the rails, and all secured to the battens E.
The operation and advantages of myinvention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the annexed drawings. The rails D of the fence are inserted through the space a in the posts, the bottom-rail, G, with the notched batten fitting around the base-strips O. The
clevises are then applied to secure the rails in place, said rails resting in suitable seats on the shoulders f. Thus the fence is securely fastened together without any danger of being displaced by the wind, and may be readily taken down when it is desired to move the fence.
It will be apparent that by the above construction I provide a simple, durable, and convenient fence, that may be put up in a very short time and taken down,as desired, thereby forming. an efficient portable fence which-will prove of utility in use.
Having described my invention, I claim as new-- As an, improvement in fences, the combination, with the post, comprising the side pieces. 0,. having the block S rigidly secured between the same at one end, and the standards B B, arranged on a line with each other and fitting between the side pieces, one of said standards being detachable and bearing against the block, and the other permanently secured in place, and a clevis, F, holding the two standards together, of the fence proper, comprising horizontal rails and upright battens connected together, the ends of all the rails except the bottom one extending through the space between the standards of the post, and provided with recesses d and notches e, so as to enable the ends to fit together and rest upon inclined shoulders f which project from one of the standards, the bottom rail of the fence being shorter than the others, and a notch, b, provided in the lower edge of one of the battens, permitting the latter to be supported on the base or side pieces of the post, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in pres ence of two witnesses.
W'itnesses: JOHN NEWTON.
CHAS. EVERRONER, CHARLES H. BUTLER.
