J. BENDER.
RAILROAD RAIL JOINT.
Patented Dec. 9, 1884.
.Uivrrnn dra'rns PATENT @rrren.
JOHN FENDER, OF DEUNQUAT, OHIO.
RAILROAD RAlL JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,123 dated December 9, 188%.
- Applicaiion filed May 23, 188-1. (No nirdel.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN Bnn'nnn, a citizen of the United States, residingat Deunquat, in the county of VJyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in RailroadRail Joints; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a transverse sec tional view of my device, taken on the line m x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is aside view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view. Fig. 4 is a perspec tive view, and Figs. 5, (i, and 7 are perspective detail views.
The object of this invention is to provide a coupling or fastening whereby the ends of railway-rails may be secured in relative position without fastening them by means of bolts.
The invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter set fort-h, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the ends of the rails. At each end the rail is cut away on top through the head, so that the web and foot project, as shown at 0 represents the end of the head, and D the shoulder of the web. When the ties to which the coupling is to be secured are of soft tiniber, the said ends are rabbeted underneath, as indicated at F.
G represents the cap, having a head portion, H, and side walls, K, which extend downward therefrom on each side of an interval, L, of sufficient size to receive the rabbeted ends B of the rails and allow a little play endwisc.
The lower ends of the side walls are turned outward to form feet, as indicated at on, which are provided with apertures a for the passage of the spikes, whereby the cap-piece is to be secured to the tie. Sometimes a transverse stay is formed between the side walls of the cap-piece. In the feet of the cap-piece are made the rectangular notches or seats I), to re ceive the ends of the base-plate 2, which extends transversely under the rail ends, the edges of said plate fitting into the rabbets F of said ends. The outer ends or this trans verse plate project through the notches b, and are provided with upwardly-turned flanges c, which engage the sides of the cap-piece. When this plate is used, itis not necessary to form a transverse stay in the cap-piece.
XV hen oalc ties are used, the cap-piece may be made without the notches, and the lower plate may be made larger than the cap-piece, and may have side notches and flange projections, whereby it engages or is locked to the feet of the cap-piece.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination of the end-rabbeted rails having the web shoulders, as shown, and the under rabbets, the headed cap-piece having side walls and its feet provided with the vertical notches and perforations, and the transverse base-plate having end flanges to engage the notches in the feet of the said cap-piece, whereby the whole may be secured together without the use of bolts, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BENDER.
