SPECIFICATION forming part ofrLetters Patent No. 309,099, dated December 9, 1384.
Application filed June 11, 1884.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, VnsLnv Royen, of Columbus, Franklin county, Ohio, have iuvented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Actuated Valves, of which the following is a speciiication.
My present invention relates to improvements in the class of valve-movements for steam engines, illustrated in Patent No. 261,485, for steam-actuated valves, granted to me on the 18th day ot' July, 1882, to which reference may be made for parts which my said inventions possess in common. My improvements in this, as in the former case, concern those valve-movemenis of direct acting steam-engines in which an auxiliary valve actuated from the main pistonuod governs a steam-actuated main valve or valve proper, which in turn controls the movements oi" the engine-piston.
My invention relates to a new and vuseful construction and arrangement ofthe main and auxiliary valves with their respective inclosing chests o1.' chambers, and their connecting steam and exhaust passages.
The accompanying drawings show the parts in position for admitting steam in l'ront ol' and discharging it i'rom the rear ot' the piston.

A, B, and C may, respectively, represent the main cylinder, the piston, and the pistonrod of a direct-acting steam-engine.
From the upper part of theinterior ot' the cylinder A, near its respective ends, proceed ducts D D', which, approaching one another and then turning upward, communicate with a cylindrical chest, E, within which iits and slides my steam-actuated valve proper, F, of

correspondingly cylindrical sha-pe,and just so much less length than the interior ot' said chest as to permit of the proper reciprocating action of said valve without liability of impact with the ends ofthe chest. Ot the said ducts l) D, each serves alternately as a steam and an exhaust duct. rIhe interior of chest E communicates at its upper part, near the respective ends, by ducts G G, with a cylindrical cha1uber,l;[, located above and athwart the chest E, and having iitted within it a corresponding cylindrical valve, I, which operates by oscillation about its axis, produced by arm J, whose rod K derives its motion from the piston-rod, either by being bolted directly to it, as at '/t, or by othersuitable means. Live steam enters chamber II at its top, which chamber and the chest E, respectively, comnninicate by exhaust-ports M M with the general escape-pipe N. In the present illustration. each du'et G G is by turns a steam and an exhaust passage; but for some purposes I provide alongside of said ducts distinct exhaust passages, such as represented in my aforesaid patent. The entire exhaust, in my present arrangement, taking place through the chest E, dispenses with customaryexhaust-passage in the cylinder-wall. The valve proper, F, is traversed diametri cally by an up-ilared or funnel-formed tube, O, which constitutes part of the passage for the live steam to the main cylinder, communieating, ior this purpose, with port .P in top of chest E, through auxiliary valve I, with steamsupply pipe L. Two ports,ff, in bottom of valve proper, F, take turns in communicating one with one and the other with the other ot' the two ducts I) D', the duct not then thus in communication communicating with and receiving steam from the tube O. A port, f, through the side of the valve proper, F, commuuicates with the exhaust-passage M. A similar port or slot, ff, in opposite side of said valve, serves to balance it and to receive a pin, @which prevents rotation of the valve. The auxiliary valve I is traversed diametrically by a passage, i, which carries steam directly downward through valve proper to the main cylinder. Branch passages t" i take turns in conveying steam through the ducts G G to the respective ends of chest E for the IOO forward and backward propulsion of the valve proper. While such branch passage on one side of the auxiliary valve is conveying live steam to the duct on that side one of the passages 13m/1V on the other side is permittingexhaust of steam from the other duct into ex` haust-port M.
The above-described preferred forni of my invention may be modified in non-essential particulars; for example, the live-steam tube- Wall may, as in Fig. S, be brought flush with the exhaust side of the valve proper, F, the exhaust-port M being coved, as at m, to aiord free exit.
I claim as new and of my invention-- 1. The cylindrical chest E, containing the cylindrical valve proper, F, crossed diametrically by the steam-tube O, and having the bottom exhaust-ports,ff, and the side exhaust-port, f, in combination with the ducts D D of the main cylinder, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The cylindrical chest E, containing the cylindrical valve proper, F, crossed diametrically by the livesteam tube O, and having the bottom exhaust-ports, f f', and the side exhaust port, f, in combination with the ducts D D on one side of said chest E, and with the steam-port P and the exhaust-port M on other sides of said chest, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination. with the cylindrical valve proper, F, and with its cylindrical chest E, having the live-steam ducts G G and the exhaust-ports M M, the transverse cylindrical chamber H, having the cylindrical auxiliary valve I, containing the diametrical branched passage/i il i and the exhaust-passages i il", formed and operating` as set forth.
4. The hollow cylindrical steam-actuated valve proper, having the diametric central tube, O, for live steam, the eXhaust-portsff f, and the balancing port or slot fm, containing the guide-pin Q, substantially as set forth.
