PISTON.
SPECEECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,985, dated December 9, 1884:.
T0 @ZZ 1071/0772/ it may conce/'11,
Beit known that l. EDWIN H. Bunn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county ot' Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pistons, of which thef'ollowing is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to an improvement in a self-adjusting piston for steam, air, or liquid pumps, 4and for other purposes; and it for self-adjustmentto cylinder.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a central cross-section. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the eut in ring C.
Similarletters indicate cori esponding parts.
Letter A designates the hub of' a piston cast or otherwise provided with a iiange attached to piston-rod G.
C represents ring cut in three sections obliquely, as shown in Fig. 3.
D is an oblique and tapering wedge fitted between and forming part of sections of ring C, and extending centrally in an oblique line and resting on cone or conical wedge E,which fitted loosely to hub A and cliainbered ont for spiral spring F, as shown in Fig. 1. l, B is a follower iitted to hub A, and passes over piston-rod G- and secured to place by nut H or otherwise. This piston works substaniiallyasfbllows: When any wearof either cyl- (No model.)
inder or piston is to be cox'npensated for, the spiral spring F presses cone E over hub A, thereby pushing outward tapering wedges D, which carry with them sections 0f ring C to cylinder, the whole heilig clamped between flanges B and corresponding flange on hub A, which is attached to piston-rod G by nut H, or other suitable means.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ring C, eut in three or more sections obliquely and beveled, and wedge D, which is also eut oblique] y and tapering and fitted between sections of ring C, so as to bear on cylinder on saine circle as sections of ring C, extending centrally and resting on conical wedge or conc E, which is fitted loosely over hub A, and held in position byspiral spring F, which presses cone E over hub A, and adjusts wedges D and ring G to size ot' cylinder in which the piston is used. so that any wear ot' either cylinder or piston will be readily compensated for by spiral spring F pressing cone E over hub A, thereby pushing outward tapering wedges D, which carry with them sections C to cylinder, thereby leaving no open joints, and at the saine time taking up the smallest wear and adjustingitself evenly on al1 sides without any sudden or undue friction.
